This week on 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙊𝙡𝙙 𝙃𝙖𝙩, we work on an Aspen Fedora from American Hat Makers. Gonna put some miles on this baby so the owner can ride in style!
This week @Nac-endeavors from Instagram writes in with his Quick tip on how to choose a hat: "Leather for the weather. Fedoras for the señoras!". Thanks for the tip, Nick!
Special thanks to:
American Hat maker as well as Wrangler and Wiseguy Suspenders for the wardrobe!
Tune in next week and see what's getting a vintage spin on 𝙏𝙃𝙄𝙎 𝙊𝙇𝘿 𝙃𝘼𝙏!

I've got a lot of hats, I make my own. I appreciate the broken in look but the spray paint is too much. I usually just sit on mine a couple times to set in some wrinkles. Just enough to make it look more relaxed and less crisp. When I use fire, it's to burn off the fuzz for a smoother finish and I try to avoid any burn marks or discoloration. Hats get dirty fast enough if you wear them everyday. I like feathers in hats, turkey feathers work great and they're always on trails.

@chrisplu84

Absolutely. If you do the flame it will probably make the hat a more tan color fyi. Unless you use a torch and only burn exactly where you want it. If you spray the whole thing with alcohol it will make the whole hat a little darker when it burns

I lived in an area really dense with birds of prey and would collect the feathers out in the woods when I was photographing. I had no idea until a couple years ago you couldn't do that. Can you burn faux felt hats?
@chrisplu84
@chrisplu84 Жыл бұрын
Really depends on the faux part. Haha. Even cheap felt is usually wool. If that's the case then yes. If it's any sort of polyester or synthetic it will melt instantly. You'd be better off just painting it to look burnt if it's synthetic

Is wool able to burn? I see a lot of hats that say wool and felt. Not sure if it’s the same thing!
@chrisplu84
@chrisplu84 Жыл бұрын
Usually low cost felt is wool. Some will say 100% wool as a selling point but low cost felt is typically wool. Expensive hats will be fur felt, which means it's the pelt of a different animal. Like a beaver which is more durable and water resistant. Even wool felt however will take the heat fine. Just make sure it doesn't say it's polyester or anything else synthetic or it will melt. Also a lot of cheaper hats will use poly thread (almost fishing line), so be careful with the fire around the seams if that's what the hat you're trying has
@rachelday3969
@rachelday3969 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply back! I def don’t want to start a fire, lol! Is it better to use fur felt? Or does wool felt burn the same as long as it doesn’t have the polyester in it? You make it look so easy to do im terrified to try! lol
@chrisplu84
@chrisplu84 Жыл бұрын
@@rachelday3969 wool works fine. The denser the wool, the better it looks in my opinion. Some of the cheaper floppy wool or crushable wool hats don't turn out as well but fur felt will run you a pretty penny unless you can find one at a thrift shop or on eBay but even there I'm seeing a huge upturn in prices since the whole hat trend has really taken off

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to do to a perfectly good new hat. Your results and work are very good, and have a home on stage and screen. Otherwise, what kind of a poser would pass themselves off as the owner of this hat? You wear a hat that advertises you lived with the Eskimo, you better sure as heck know how to build an igloo and spear a fish. A legitimately worn hat tells the story of how it got here. Nothing replaces time, and those who know know. Karma being an evil mistress, you wear a hat advertising you're some kind of expert while knowing nothing, you'll be lucky to make it out with it on your head and not shoved sideways up your rear end.

There's always one person who has to leave this kind of comment.. how did they ruin the hat exactly? It's just some material shaped up to wear on your head, and the whole thing is about style in the first place. The only way that hat is "ruined" is if the hat was yours and someone did that to it. But it's not. Whoever has that hat loves it.
