When the dining room floor was demoed the crew found a subfloor made of old growth timbers. The homeowners and Charlie Silva have an idea for reusing those timbers as a sliding barn type door for the new pantry. Kevin finds Charlie in his shop working on the door and gives him a hand. Training is a big part of the process for Generation Next. Roger is helping a horticulture class at Minuteman Tech as they restore a flower garden for the National Park Service in Concord, Massachusetts. As they divide lilies, the instructor and students talk about the benefits of hands-on work in programs such as horticulture and how this class will get them one step ahead in the job world. Back at the house, there has always been a cold spot in the corner of the living room. Tommy suspects it is because of an uninsulated crawl space. Kevin finds Tommy and Charlie breaking through a century old foundation to find out what surprises lurk behind the stone vault. Upstairs in the new garage Kevin finds Richard and the Bilo plumbing team laying out the heating system before the concrete floor is poured. With a living space above, the homeowners want to have heat in the new two-car garage, so they have opted for a sub-floor system. Outside, work by the apprentices to rebuild the front porch is almost complete. The old columns couldn’t be saved because they were rotting. Kevin finds Tommy showing Bailey, Austin and Nathan how to install new columns.

It's unfortunate to see that the most experienced apprentice seems to be doing most of the more involved tasks, which is a disservice to the other students. As someone who did an apprenticeship in a past life, I can attest first hand to that this happens a lot in the field. The journeymen often lean on the more skilled students in order to save time, but it's extremely important to ensure that all students get experience learning and doing ALL tasks regularly. The quality of the apprentice's work at the end of their training depends of this.

I completely understand Tommy’s reasoning for leaving part of that rubble stone foundation wall open but I was so hoping they were going to say “now that everything is insulated we can rebuild and close up this wall but before we do we made a time capsule to place inside this wall.” Whenever I open a wall I will write short messages with my name and date on the studs with my sharpie.

Since they want the rough unfinished side facing out, meaning they’re not going to sand or apply any new finish to it, my guess is they don’t want to deal with glue squeeze out. It’d be hard to clean up. Just gluing the floating tenons will be plenty for a light duty door like that.

@KarlBunker
@KarlBunker 3 жыл бұрын
@@russlorenzini2492 That's not correct, according to the sources I've looked at. The difference between a floating tenon (AKA a Domino) and a biscuit is the shape of the wooden insert. Dominoes fit into a deep slot with perpendicular walls, while biscuits fit into an arc-shaped slot. Dominoes are (or at least can be) stronger and ensure precise alignment of the two pieces of wood. The tool for making Domino slots is evidently patented by Festool, is only available from them and is hugely expensive.

"Budget" doesn't necessarily imply doing things on the cheap of course. Probably in this situation it was intended to mean try and keep the costs under a million ... With reference to a heated garage, and the additional cost reference the overall " budget", it couldn't have been that much as a percentage. Have to say (from my UK pov) having individually programmed AC in every room is a bit OTT (over the top) 😂. So why not a heated garage? Got to use up all that energy somehow as costs more to store it sometimes ... I suppose you might get the London mansion sized homes of Arab and Russian billionaire types kitted out with that sort of thing. Although mainly they are annoying their neighbours by excavating beneath their houses for the installation of underground garages, swimming pool/fitness suites, home cinema and bowling alleys, panic rooms and vaults ... and probably dungeons ... we see some funny folks about these days ... far too many shops flogging off (groan) all this black leather gear about for my liking. Evidently the "500" rooms on the above grounds four storeys isn't quite big enough ...

@@Kevin-mp5of 😂 hmm, but if the owners were after the synthetic trendy retro look for that one, single, solitary pantry door in their kitchen surely they would have insisted that no-one under the age of ninety laid hands on the timber. Built using only hand cut nails, edges planed off and proper braced and ledged construction. All this stuff and nonsense using modern adhesives, domino jointed boards and modern round nails ... not quite the authenticity they were expecting perhaps. Dare I suggest the owners, who seem to have more money than they know what to do with, and spell budget .... "BUDGET", were "sold" the idea of a "period looking" door so as to allow the producers to crowbar in a scene where the trusty 5000💰💰💰 Festool domino jointer struts it's stuff, thus allowing Kevin to wallop in the dominoes with his plastic headed mallet? Did I forget the thicknesser? I had until now. However, despite all the irony, it was an interesting micro project and did tick the boxes on the recycling/upcycling thing, so not all bad.

@@brucefullwood Aha! I was under the impression they were known, for the moment anyway, as "domino" joiners. As in a natural(?) progession from cylindrical dowels to ellipsoidal "biscuits". From the blurb I read a while back these domino pieces offer a larger cross section and don't taper off as does a "biscuit" in the joint. It might be of interest to them as go for the history thing that boards used to be joined with a continuous metal strip. Most commonly found in floor boards, before they machined in the tongue and grooves ... before they got around to composite materials ... on the presumption "everyone but everyone" would have their floors covered in fitted carpets. Doubtless we shall see the return of real floorboards on the excuse that all this composite floorboarding is oozing poisonous vapours and we'll all die in our beds of a night. (Irony Alert) Composite material floorboards just not "green" enough! Do you want your children to grow up breathing poisonous vapours? Doubtless too we shall be banned from building on and with granite on the grounds (groan) that this deadly radioactive radon will rot our teeth and probably turn all our nice cotton clothes a nasty grey colour ... and make us go grey by the time we leave school.

Interesting stuff. And, excellentay to see those horticultural students getting your actual hands on work experience in a real world situation that other folks can appreciate and admire for years to come. Presumably the garden's custodian type folks will have them, or their fellows, back for other jobs. The college tutors must have been beside themselves for such an opportunity for their students. Sort of gives "ownership" for a project when these students show their parents or other halves what they do. Ditto the erection of the columns; hands on work experience in another real world situation. However, Tommy and compadre, hang your dusty heads in shame ... did my eyes deceive me? No, they did not, working in a dusty work area without dust masks! Not only dust but possiblity of mould spores, bug droppings and who knows what else? Seems at odds with the column cutters lads who definitely weren't taking chances. Lastly, it might have been an opportunity lost when building that door not to have used similar cut nails for a sort of faux authenticity perhaps. Plus would have been interesting to see how they measured and made up the brace for the door. Still, not a bad episode for all that.

But, again, they have Kevin entering the sceen with a tool belt over his shoulder like he was actually showing up to a job site to perform actual work. The whole purpose of this show is to advertise, not build. That being said, I do like the show and I have learned a lot from it. But most people know it's primary goal.
