The final roof section of the house is over the new living room addition. It’s unique because it cantilevers out over a balcony. But as Kevin finds out from Tom, that means installing the rafters takes more care. In the kitchen, the main counter is up against a wall of windows and that causes a problem for venting the drain for the sink. Richard shows Kevin how to install a Bow Vent to send the pipe down through the basement. Outside, Kevin finds Tom giving our apprentice Erick a lesson in letting siding breathe. The HVAC crew has been busy with ductwork and today Richard is helping install an air handler for the bedroom wing. A flat roof in New England can turn into a wintery mess if ice and snow slide onto a doorway. Kevin finds Tom installing cleats on the roof over an entrance.

@@shoey64 thanks, we lost our daddy when I was only 3 years old & my brother was 16 years older than me so he was my brother my father figure & my best friend. I actually lost one brother overseas while he was serving in the army he was killed in action, then I lost my mom 2/2/22 & my oldest brother in 4/4/22 so these episodes really brings back good memories.

I bet those gaskets on the washers on the snow retainer bracket also serves to separate the Aluminum from the Steel. If you don't put some from of separation there you'll get different metal corrosion as I bet that nut was stainless just as the base of the bracket. Aluminum does not like touching steel.

6:30....what prevents the sewer gases from not coming up threw the vent bow...a pipe is never truly filled...I know there is a p-trap at the sink but if the trap ever loses the slug of water all those gases are flowing straight thru the bow...

So why not put a vertical box in front of the corner load of kitchen (☆pillar feature) and run the pipe up and out from there? Use a 2x6, bump it next to header support of corner window, even if you drill a 4in hole thru it, you still would have enough meat for wall board

6:44 I did not know my kitchen sink drain needed another pipe to shoot gas out of the roof. I thought it only needed 1 pipe to drain the water out when I washed my hands.

Yeah any drain like that has to have a vent. If you look at your roof, you'll probably see a pipe sticking up in the middle, and that's the vent. Otherwise, when water drains out, it creates a vacuum as there is no air to come in behind it (sort of like when you take a straw full of water and put your finger over the top - the water cannot drain). There was actually another ToH video in which the homeowner observed that running his washing machine caused his toilet to gurgle. That's why - without a proper vent, the draining water was pulling a vacuum, which in this case was pulling down from the toilet.

My new house that I just built has that vent device in the island sink. So SLOW to drain a sink full of water. I was extremely surprised to see the city allows them.

@@scratch6897 It really depends on what you're doing... Plywood gets a bad rap from purists, especially in furniture building, but it is a great material with it's own unique set of strengths and weaknesses and in some situations using plywood is better than using solid wood.

HVAC and plumbers tradesmen have the hardest job for rough in...Electricians have it hard too...I'm a remodeling contractor so I work with all those guys; nothing but respect and if you're building an addition OR a house ALWAYS consult with your tradesmen, especially HVAC...Rich is the man following client request...I tell my HVAC guys; Run it along the ceiling I'll build a box for it...

The architect on this project should have consulted the HVAC and plumber tradesmen. The house should have been designed with spaces to put the HVAC and plumbing. Making the tradesmen figure where to put things, after the structure is built, is not very smart.

@@TheGuyThatEveryoneIgnores You're right; they should have...As I've seen too often, mechanicals are always an afterthought...And we spoil them by doing the hardest part and making it work in the footprint...As part of Architect training they should spend a year in each of the trades...It would really help...I've known a couple guys from the field that became engineers or architects...They always provide the best drawings.

Having been a plumber in the UK for around 47yrs, I cant believe how complicated you make a small job. Then again regulations aren't so strict here, we tend to go more by common sense. Also keeping sanitary appliances as close as possible to vertical soil pipes.

I see what you mean. Here in Germany vents aren't that complicated too. You need to stay within 4 meters to the vertical piping or size up the pipe for inner pipe ventilation.

at 13:10 - There is a condensate pump on top floor to pump out A/C condensate. That's a disaster waiting to happen. if the pump fails, the condensate will leak down to the lower floors causing damage. Nobody checks a condensate pump to make sure it's not clogged. The condensate pump should be in a waterproof tub and there should be a water detector inside the tub to determine if water has overflowed into the tub-- indicating a failed pump. Better yet, get rid of the pump and rely on gravity, if possible. There is no shortage of gravity the last time I checked...

That looked like a 1:1 cantilever; I thought cantilevers had to be at least a 2:1, inside to out. I get the savings/point of the engineered joists but don’t like them; as a firefighter they’re quite dangerous as they don’t last or hold up in a fire the OSB center just isn’t strung enough and burns through too fast.

Did anyone notice that Tommy said they would have to adhere the sheet to the wall with caulking but he applied the matrix over the sheet without sealing it? I hope this doesn't mean they have to take it apart and re-do it....

No. It has to be adhered to the foundation (concrete) with an adhesive because it can't be stapled to the concrete. They can come back and lift the small flap up and adhere it to the concrete. Not a problem.

Only if they caught it before they put up the siding. The problem is that this episode aired in 2018 so it is too late to lift the flap. If, as the video implies, they didn't catch it at the time they really should send a crew back to take the wall apart and re-do it correctly.
