This Old House

Күн бұрын

Jenn Nawada and the homeowners select pavers for hardscape. Tom Silva and Norm Abram install a skylight in the bathroom, while the sewer line and water main are completely replaced out front. The original foundation is also repaired.
#ThisOldHouse #AskTOH SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
There are four hardscapes in the yard that require stone. Today Jenn travels with our homeowners, Sunil and Neha and Blair the landscape architect to a stone design center to pick out material. Back at the house, Tom installs the skylight that Norm framed out. A completely new sewer line and water main to the street goes in outside. Kevin finds Richard working with Jimmy McLaughlin’s crew as they make a mess of the street. A good sub-floor is key to a solid, quiet floor. Tom shows Kevin some sub-flooring skills he learned years ago. Downstairs, the original foundation of our project has a bad crack that could be a problem in the future. Tom and Kevin watch Hugo Provetti repair the fissure with a foundation epoxy.

The cost of the sewer repair (which was botched decades ago) falling on the current owners is total BS. Clearly, the city should be responsible for repairing a botched job that it allowed to happen in the first place. This is one of many reasons I think I'd rather build a new home rather than deal with the unknowns of renovating.

I love the safety ropes on the flat roof. Would that rope's length even be short enough to stop your fall? It doesn't look like it.

Thought the same thing in a previous episode. I was like- I get that they’re showing doing stuff safely because it’s on tv, but yeah quite long looking! It’s the perfect length to grab you at the last second and swing you around to bang your head into the ground.

The town no longer covering the first bit of the run is BS; Which homeowner has to pay for fixing the neighbors incorrectly ran sewer, that now has to be corrected? The one doing the reno shouldn't as it isn't theirs nor did their reno damage it, but also the neighbor shouldn't have to pay because its not damaged nor have they had the chance to budget/finance for it.

Sealing crack in foundation epoxies 9000 lbs shear strength is impossible no adhesive can take shear like that. Also seal the top and side and vacuum bag the bottom to suck the sealant down thru the crack. Maybe heat the sealing during the vacuum injection to lower viscosity during sucking down. Again no epoxies will take 9000 lbs shear impossible.

First likely around $20,000(my estimate) for the asbestos abatement and now with the sewer issue, lets say it's likely going to cost them at least twice or three times of my asbestos estimate. My guess they have one hell of a loan to cover the cost of everything that isn't included in the reconstruction of their house & I'm sure their bank/loan company is just going to love them when it's time to pay it back. At this rate they're going to have a property worth a couple hundred thousand & have close to one million or so into it..

You guys don’t need a rataining wall for one there’s no hill you only put a rataining wall in if there is a slope/hill so and two that’s bad for the foundation of the house the foundation will get pushed from the preshire of the wall so you can waste money on a wall or save money and save the house.

No fall protection at the roof edges. If they don’t use safety equipment somebody will complain. When they do use it, other people feel the need to call them out for being wimps. The US residential construction industry woefully neglects safety precautions compared to much of Europe and first world Asia.

Agreed, The old clay pipe could have been cleaned and lined. Also who is footing the bill to repair the neighbors pipe? Should be the city who passed the permit for the bad install, but no either the one doing the reno or the unsuspecting neighbor is getting stuck with the bill. Either way that's not going to go well for relations.
