This song is a true gem of rock history. When first released in 1967, of course without orchestra, it was a beautiful song from Procol Harum. This was a couple years after I graduated from high school, but I fondly remember it. I listen to it often. I found this on KZbin several years ago and listen often. One of the most amazing songs ever writen. As mentioned before his voice has hardly changed as all. I can see you are enjoying it also. Thanks for bringing it back one more time. I'm sure the orchestra enjoyed playing it also.

This is a fitting epitaph for Gary Brooker who died recently of cancer. I always thought it ironic that this beautiful, emotional music was pretty much the opposite of what was implied in Keith Reids brilliant lyrics! Thats probably why they were such a great band! We will miss you Mr. Brooker. Sarah, all first time listeners to this 1967 classic have just been ‘schooled’ to what the roots of rock, blues, jazz, big band, folk and country produced their fruits in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. There are so many more pioneers from that era, too many to mention, but keep searching and you will be captured by the lyrics, melodies, guitar riffs and more. This is probably my favorite version of the song I used to listen to on my round Panisonic AM radio. Remember back then, Dolby, surround sound and stereo were dreams but in R&D, as was FM radio. Curtis-Mathis was the best (price for a blue collar family) console one could buy with a B&W tv and a turn table to play 45’s and albums. How times have changed. Those of us out there remember when tv had only 4 or 5 channels that signed off at midnight and was just ‘snow’. BUT radio was on all night and forever.

Gary Brooker was good in 1968 when PH released this hit. But he was like fine wine. As he got older, he got better. He was great in this performance. There aren't many artists that can sing as well or better at this age. Many must change their delivery style and not hit all the notes the same, as they did when younger. Gary didn't change anything and hit the notes better than he did in his twenties. I never tire of watching someone watch this performance the first time. The wide open eyes, and the wide open mouth are a dead giveaway that they loved it.
