The S10e is still a great phone. In the cameras I actually liked a lot of the S10e pictures better. My wife uses the S10e and she said she's not giving it up until it dies. She hates the larger phones. She could probably live with the S22 size if she has to upgrade. Hopefully, going forward, Samsung listens and keeps a smaller phone in their lineup

Great comparison video! My beloved S10e is already gone at this point, but man watching this video reminded me of how much I enjoyed (and miss!) that phone. The S22 is a "good" small-ish substitute that is more future proof as you mentioned. However, I still wish that Samsung would create an updated version of the S10e. I'm serious.... Keep the design the same, put a 4,500 mah battery in there and make it a bit thicker to accommodate, and lastly, outfit it with the S22 Ultra cameras. Call it the S22 Pocket Pro or whatever.... I would buy that phone in 2 secs if ever created.

Very detailed review from a channel of this size. The time and efforts taken were well appreciated. However one area that I was extremely looking forward to was night shots cause these days, even budget phones can take good stills at daylight and indoor lighting. The catch though is night still and video where it's dark. That's where you'll see a massive leap of the new s22 sensor. Do take this into consideration for your new smartphone comparison. P/S, I'm surprised too that in so many aspects, the s10e holds up to s22.

As someone who spent months looking for a "perfectly balanced" phone , I was more than happy with the S10e , it was exactly what I've been looking for, for the 3.5 jack, for the big storage with a micro sd card and especially size-wise!!!! i'm no developer, but I can see that the S10e is a real beast and he'd top countless phones in many areas but the thing is , it's a beautiful Powerful phone with pretty much every feature any average user would be looking for and without having any major flaws, at all. I learned how to optimize the battery quite well . That said, I still think the S10e despite its small battery is the greatest "overall" phone ever!

I have used more than 15 phones till now including all the bells and whistles flagships of Android and iOS. S10e is the first phone I have held for 3 years and might still continue to use it for an year or so. My major requirements from a phone are lag free software experience, great camera and upon that a compact form factor. S10e is hands down faring great on all fronts till now and specially after this video I realise S22 won't feel a very major upgrade from S10e. I will wait for the next iteration then. :)

Yep, S10e was also my first 3 year phone. Ever since I switched to Android (after the iPhone 5), I've actually gotten a new phone every year... so the fact that this one lasted me three years is a major win. We'll see how long I keep the S22. I'm interested to see the Pixel 6A when that comes out as I've heard it'll be smaller than the 6.

@@JohnScottB that's great. :) I had my hands on first two pixel phones. They are a charm but had their own share of niggles on hardware front. Over the years they have actually improved a lot but market share hasn't been growing to that extent lately. Deep down, we all want pixel devices to rule as there is nothing like that stock interface coupled with mind boggling cameras and great optimization.

Thanks for showing how negligible the performance difference is for the snapdragon variants.

I upgraded from my 3 year old 7T to S22 and absolutely loving this small form factor and its loaded to the brim feature wise. I wanted to keep using my 7T until 2023 but unfortunately I updated to Android 12 from 11 which is now basically colorOS and it has such huge bugs, it made my 7T cripple. I'll probably get a pixel ROM or something on it for the kicks lol. Please do not update yours to Android 12 !

I'm literally the same. Ended up getting the OP 7T Pro, that I have just recently switched to an iPhone 13 Pro. After my OnePlus has spoiled me with its high refresh rate screen, I just couldn't get anything with 60hz, but I felt the need for a bit smaller form factor. 6.1 inch seems to be just fine to use with my small/medium sized hands.

I loved the S10e the moment I saw it in the mall. It is most definitely the most "essential" phone there has ever been in it's sense. It's been 3 years and I'm so disappointed that people still don't understand why the fingerprint scanner is placed on a higher position instead of putting it exactly where you could very easily reach it. They put it on a place higher than the finger's reach is so that when you pull it out of your pocket or you're simply picking it up from the table and hold it on the side, YOU DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY UNLOCK IT. It's up there so that when you unlock it, you have to purposefully do it instead of having a lot haphazard screen touching. It's a really good design language that it makes me sad that absolutely not one reviewer whether they liked the S10e or not, did not realize that.

@walkwithme the UI, sometimes you can't swipe up to go to the home screen, or scroll between multiple home screens, the camera sometimes take seconds to take a picture. Massive, massive thanks for this video! Really the one I've been looking for! Awesome job! I really appreciated the deep comparison between the two! My S10e is also prism green even though in the Exynos variant :( I think I would hold on to it for a little bit (I think I'll get the battery changed) coz I did hold the regular S22 and even though size-wise the difference wasn't that big to me it did matter. I've got the Prism Green S10e too. It's the best phone I've ever had. But part of me is thinking about trying an iPhone for the first time with an iPhone 13 mini, and keeping my S10e as a backup phone... I'm a little nervous about it, but I was thinking of trying something new. I've always wanted an iPhone, but my parents had a bad experience with trying to set up an iPod Touch I got for Christmas one year, so I was kinda lumped into the Android side by default. I feel like getting the iPhone would be proving to myself and my family that I am my own person and that I'm not letting those events of the past define who I am anymore. Plus the iPhone 13 mini is basically the same size as the first phone I ever got (Samsung Galaxy Trend Plus) , so it'll be like reliving the past as if the iPod incident never happened. ...Like a reset switch, in a way. And if the 13 mini isn't for me, I can return to my S10e knowing that at least I tried.🥺

@@neverendinchaos4800 I'm actually thinking doing the same thing.... Just because my S10E's battery is so terrible now it actually just last like half a day. I'll be getting the 13 mini for the form factor. I really have tiny tiny hands and it's the only compact phone out there 😔 I'm not a fan of iOS, I think One Ui is better in many aspects. I've tried the regular S22 and it's massive to me. Compacts phones are a dying breed so I think the mini is gonna be the last one.

And I prefer the placement and size of the S22 front camera. Also I prefer the S22 back camera placement, because sometimes I hide the camera with my finger at my S10e. I can see the video stability improvement from S22. Altough S10e is still a great phone in 2022 and S22 is twice as expensive, that's why I will stick with my S10e for at least 2 more years :)

As an S10e user I have to admit that I was really amazed by the physical fingerprint reader on the power button and how fast it could unlock the phone (especially considering that on my previous Huawei P8 lite it was not working), though some times it's not very reliable, especially when I have wet fingers. But I really find outrageous the fact that my sister's A71 will receive the OneUI 5.0 with Android 13 later in July, while S10 users (like me) won't, despite the S10 being a flagship (while the A71 is a midrange) and having a (theoretically) more capable SOC (Exynos 9820 vs Snapdragon 730). And the A71 went out just 3 months after the S10...

@@JohnScottB I had the Zenfone 8 for a few months now, I bought it because of the compact design. I have to say, the screen is really good, 120hz is very smooth and 1080p is more than enough for a compact display. Perfomance wise, the 888 works just fine, for a daily use is perfect no lag whatsoever, at least for now, but you can also play almost any game in high settings and still enjoy them in such small screen. Cameras are fine, 2 cameras are good enough, can't tell for the selfie camera because I never took a selfie. Only drawback is the battery, I don't know if it's my unit or not, but is just not good, 4 hours and is almost dead, even with 60hz and 90hz, and also no wireless charging, but the 30w wire charging are very good, 30 minutes for almost 70-75%

I've had the S4, S5, S7 Edge, S8, Note 9 (didn't own it), S10+, S20 Ultra, and now S22 Ultra, so I have a "history" of experience with Galaxy devices from the S-series. also, I'm a tech geek with experience in both mobile devices, PC hardware/software and networking, and I'm working with programming as a full-stack developer the lack of the SD slot in the S22-series shouldn't really matter, as the cheapest models got 128GB of internal storage, and it's by far not expesive to get some cloud storage, either rented or private hosting at home. I'm hosting my very own 2TB cloud, which over time will be the cheaper option as far as the server PC isn't a powerhouse, and with Nextcloud, I'm able to create multiple users, so my family can have their users as well without paying for it the fingerprint reader slide up/down feature was a good one on S8, Note 8, S9, Note 9, and S10e, so I totally agree about that! some people didn't really make use of it, but people who did will miss it there's a lot of headsets made with USB-C instead of AUX now, which is good because it supports better audio quality (24-bit up from 16-bit). also, good bluetooth headsets exists, not only true wireless buds, but actual around-ear and on-ear headsets performance for flagship devices is like comparing tires for a car, you can't notice a whole lot, but there's minor differences which geeks might notice easily with their knowledge. some "wanna be tech expert" people might prefer specs on paper over real life experience. I'm glad you show better knowledge than those people 5G depends pretty much on country as well, because here in Norway, the only way I'll notice any difference between 4G+ and 5G, is while downloading large files/apps or run a speedtest. Norway got some of the worlds best cellular data, easily over 150 Mbit/s download with 4G+ and often over 600 Mbit/s with 5G. I've tested up to about 850 Mbit/s download and about 100 Mbit/s upload with 5G WiFi 6 and 6E on a device is more a gimmic to me, the important upgrade is the router itself, because the router is the device that actually have the upgraded features, like a way better handling for multiple devices compared to any previous router tech. WiFi 6 routers are primarily a big upgrade for homes with IoT devices, like Smart Home systems yet another Android version, then a year of security updates, that's a good enough reason to wait for a year or 2, then upgrade to S23 or S24. 1 or 2 years better tech, maybe a better battery tech as well, 5G and WiFi 6 will get better support globally, 256GB internal storage can hopefully be the cheapest option, and so on. I would say that, anyone who still got the S10e might just wait that time to safe a few bucks and get a device with more storage, not the cheapest one about the battery capacity and S22's display refresh rate, this isn't my strongest knowledge as I've upgraded to the latest and greatest phone regulary, as you can see at the start of my comment, but the 120Hz dynamic refresh rate display is insane, and it does work better with it on compared to static 60Hz, tbh, so I bet it's one of the best features for saving power, while also making the display feel way more responsive. I can not, and will not go back to a 60Hz phone again, ever, as far as Samsung offers something better every time I'll upgrade my phone while it comes to the camera, the quality haven't been upgraded a lot, at least for the non-Ultra S22. I personally think the OIS has been too stable for normal video, but for zoom, it's good at locking in at something, which is good. the mic for video recording was noticably better at the S22 with it's improved noice cancellation. I know it's not realistic for everyone, but S22 got it's zoom lens, which I think you should compare to S10e's zoom capability. zoom is nice to have in a few situations, but it doesn't have to be like my S22 Ultra, which has 10x optical, 30x hybrid, and 100x digital zoom. 30x looks good, but anything over looks like shit, at least when getting over 50x zoom, but it's usable to read text at a very long distance. anyway, camera comparison videos can be quite long, so only major features should be included in an overall video like this one

Same. My S10e is showing its age (3-hour battery life, screen burn-in for the keyboard, black bars and the notification shade and sometimes, vertical lines flashing in the middle of the screen) and even though the fingerprint sensor, the headphone jack and the Micro SD card slot was convenient, I can trade these in (and use dongles for my headphones, earphones and for my Micro SD card) to still use a truly small phone (under 6 inches with bezelless screens, under 5.2 inches with big bezels). Yes, the iPhone 13 mini seems to be my last smartphone upgrade. If the 13 mini starts producing the same kind of issues when it gets old as my S10e and there will be no phones in the 5" range, then I'll go back to the Nokia brick phones. Not joking. A smartphone was always the extension of the brick phone concept with a touch screen, internet connectivity and 3rd-party app support for me. As such, I always kept using small phones; the same kind of small as my Nokias before my first smartphone, the Sony Xperia L.

This review doesn't really do the cameras on the newer S22 justice when compared to the S10e. I upgraded from an S10e to an S21 (now have an S22 on the way) and there was a pretty decent difference in quality between the S21 and S10e due to the larger main camera sensor. With the S22 having a larger sensor than the S21, I'm assuming this difference will be even bigger. In bright lighting during the day most cameras will look good, which is why the results were so similar in your comparison. However, the S10e falls apart during and after sunset. Basic sunset photos between my old S10e and S21 were pretty different, with the S21 able to pull in more light from shadows without overexposing the sun/sky. Night time shots with the S21 were also quite a bit better than on my old S10e, and in the right conditions I was able to capture beautiful photos of the milky way. My S10e couldn't ever do this. HDR performance has been improved on newer samsung phones too which you can see in your comparison. Finally the zoom lens makes the camera array so much more versatile on the S21/22. Moon photography is possible with 30x zoom and zoom lock, and picture quality up to around 10x is really amazing. The S10e by comparison digitally crops up to 10x from its main sensor, which is fine up to 2x, but anything further looks noticeably hazy. Other differences include a much better portrait mode on the S21/22, plus better photo and video stabilization. I agree with a lot of your points you made in other areas of your comparison between these two devices but you undersold the camera upgrades on the S22 quite a bit. For users who care about smartphone photography the difference between the S10e and S22 is really big.

I have the Samsung S10e, and absolutely love it. It was so feature rich compared to iPhones at the time, while being pretty fast. Micro SD is great as a secondary storage mechanism for less accessed photos, videos, and audio files! The side finger print scanner is also the best way to easily do biometrics, and I've used both Apple's face ID as well as the under display finger print scanner on the Galaxy Tab S8 (far less accurate with a screen protector on). I am not an audiophile, but love the headphone jack because it makes me sure that my Bluetooth earbudss will not accidentally try to connect to my laptop or tablet when in an important meeting. They just work and leave me free to charge the device. However, with all of the downgrades to the device, I'm considering going back to the iPhone next year, assuming the Pixel 7 or other Androids with 3+ years of OS updates do not blow me away. If the S23 series is not a huge improvement, and brings back the micro SD card, what's the point of paying $700+ for a phone with worse overall performance, just because of USB C?

I am using a refurbished s10e right now as I bought it last summer. At that time I had just broken my old pixel screen and needed to buy a new phone, but was not impressed by the phones on the market. The s10e price tag was $200, so I decided to use it at least for a year or two. I am genuinely impressed by the quality of s10e. Samsung does have bloatware but mostly is for the better. I like Samsung dex a lot. The side fingerprints sensor is just a superior design compared to under-screen fingerprint readers. Headphone jacks and SD card slots are such useful features. I definitely feel that battery is a downside. The battery of my S10e now is unable to keep up for a day of heavy use. Charging spots are everywhere, so not a big deal per se, but definitely a bit of hassle. I don't think I would change my s10e for a good long time unless I find a flagship-level phone that has a side fingerprint reader, a desktop environment, a SD card slot, and a relatively small screen. The Motorola edge 2022 would do if its price is not as ridiculous.

Thank you for the in-depth review! I still recall how shocked I was by the similarity between my S9+ and S21+ when I first got the latter. The display and the cameras have definitely improved over the years, but everything else feels familiar or are entirely absent. I think I will hold on to my S9+ as a second phone for several more years before retiring it. It is worth much more than its current trading value.

I'm a big fan of the MKBHD channel for this reason. I feel like he's very transparent about the iterative nature of smart phone development. Each year is mostly the same with a small tweak here or there. But over time it should add up. Plus most manufacturers go through two generations without a new design, so that's natural.
@dantan7881
@dantan7881 2 жыл бұрын
I think the tech review culture breeds the mindset that everything should be new. This is how manufacturers get people to buy phones each year. Comparison videos highlight differences, no matter how small they are. Makes you think "well the new one's still better". This makes me think that the complaints about the iPhone being too iterative is just reviewers being too new tech-hungry. New features should come out only when they're refined enough, which is exactly what Apple has been doing.
@charlesjmouse

An excellent review, thank you. A headphone jack, a MicroSD slot, and on the smaller end (not slim, small) are all must-haves for me - things you just don't see in smart phones these days... a physical keyboard and removable battery would be nice, but sadly no more BlackBerry! I guess the S10e remains my best, and probably only, option. IMO: The move from wired headphones to Bluetooth is a great example of people falling for marketing intended only to squeeze more money out of them - well done Apple, grrr! The messing about with pairing and charging wireless headphones is at least as bad as tangled wires, the latter only a problem if you can't be bothered to take care. Bluetooth headsets are far more expensive, don't last, and if earphones have only one job - to provide decent sound - Bluetooth fails utterly unless you spring to some serious money. In short people are fools! Sorry, rant over.

I love my S10e. The swipe feature on the finger print reader was one i didn`t know i needed. I am honestly kind of concerned if there will even be a comparable new phone in a few years when i upgrade to a new phone. The size of this device is simply perfection. It`s not `mini`, it`s not big, it`s compact. It feels small, but when you use the screen it feels completely natural, like you`re not missing out on any screen real estate. The headphone jack and micro sd card slot are features i can`t live without, as over the last few years i switched from bluetooth to wired audio more and more, but still use my phone as a source 99% of the time. I will keep this thing for as long as i can. If i break it, i`ll buy a new one. (this thing is dirt cheap on the used market i got mine for 160€) If the battery, the usb port, or the headphone jack wear out, i`ll have the phone serviced, even if it costs me more than what the phone is worth. I constantly buy new tech, but for some reason, i tend to stick with my phone for a long time, but the S10e is nothing like the LG G7 fit i had before. It´s still a flagship for me. It`s snappy, well built, the display and speakers are excellent. The only difference i notice when trying out new phones at the store is the screen refresh rate. If i could wish for a dream phone, it would be the size of the S10e, but foldable, without the hickups associated with foldables and with a really good headphone jack and better battery life. If a manufacturer were to create such a beast, i`d buy it asap. until then i´ll stick with the 10e. If i`m forced to get a newer device in a few years, i`ll guess i just go with whatever still has a decent jack and expandable storage (probably Sony)

Yeah they hit the nail on the head with the S10e - it's too bad it didn't sell that well so they decided the "e" line was one and done.

If, big IF, Samsung were listening and reading these reviews they would bring back SD cards, jacks and the side fingerprint sensor. But hey, they are the big dog right, they think they know best... not!

Thank you for this great video. I'm one of those users who are still hesitating to do the switch. The biometric power boutton feature not being available on the S22 is very disapointing. When it's dark and face reconization doesn't work picking it up to unlock instantly with power is so much faster than print sensor on the screen. I don't understand why they gave up that feature, it probably won't come back in the future model either :-(. Can you do a battery test video, where both phones and compared side by side at 50% luminosity and intense video playing to see how much longer the s22 battery last ?

I love both of these phones. I would like the next generation(S23) to be even a little smaller, like 6" even would be great. I find the s10e is easier to use with one hand than the s22. I don't really think the s22 is a compact phone. I think 6"-6.4" is medium, under 6" is compact, and 6.5" or larger is a large phone. The Pixel 4a (yes I have one) also is a compact phone that feels perfect in the hand. If Samsung could just shrink it a little more for next year, and put the same size battery in it, that would be the perfect phone for me. EXCEPT - like you said, the speakers are disappointing. They sound similar to the Pixel 5a, which is a $450 phone. Well the S22 is an $800 phone. The speakers are more important than most people realize. A flagship phone for that price should have great speakers, not just 'good'. It's not economically responsible to buy a new phone every year, but if the S23 hit these bars next year, I would probably give it up and buy it. I do like my S22 very much, I'm just not totally in love with it. I'll just date her for a year or so probably.

this is the exact video that i need!, i use s10e for almost 3yrs now but still doubting about jumping to the s22. considering losing the headphone jack, expandable storage and still getting a bigger phone in return (i cant even handle the s10e properly its couple times slipping from my hand). i'm thinking about keeping the phone for another year or changing to iphone 13 mini

The decisive factors in choosing my new smartphone (in one year or so) will be: 1. a desktop mode; 2. large 6.7+ screen size; 3. no bloatware; 4. big 5000+ mah battery; 5. durable materials; 6. long-term OS support
@BriefNerdOriginal
@BriefNerdOriginal 2 жыл бұрын
@Carl Gunderson you're right and yes, I am painfully aware. The "no bloatware" factor kind of compensate, at least in part. For instance I don't like "smart" assistants and have disabled Google entirely (I use the browser anyways for searches, so this even makes the process faster). And of course there are tons of tweaks, and Android is great for tweaking ^_^

What a nice comparison, definitely the best between these 2 phones. As others, I love the S10e so much that I decided to wait another year. I love everything, especially the fingerprint reader. Only downside is battery (I have the exynos) but I am not doing a battery swap, since Samsung won't do it and local shops would compromise water resistance. I'am just charging it a bit more often... Would love to see a video on Android 12 on the S10e. I am hesitant to update since I have heard comments about battery life draining faster.

@@_Digitalguy hi, as someone who updates regularly i can tell you that battery pretty much went downhill with Android 11 aka february last year, saw no changes with Android 12 tho, im also on Exynos S10e, best thing you can do is buy that Xiaomi 10Ah powerbank (bought it in local store for like 35$) with 18W output and carry it with you if you arent seeing a power outlet for more than 8-9 hours. Rip mate :')

@@gavra-1337 Thanks, I have already quite a few powerbanks of different sizes. I have not updated yet to Android 12 but this is good to know, I think I will do soon. My S10e developed an issue since, it won't fast charge anymore. It will only work with standard 5v charging and won't even charge if I plug in a fast charger...

That video is so on point!! Was thinking about upgrading my S10e, since finally there’s a compact alternative, but nah looks like I’m not in a hurry at all. Had some battery issues, got a new one in and it works perfectly again. Also my fingerprint reader didn’t always work, but since you mentioned that it works better than the one in the s22, I set it up new and it’s super snappy now. Also still really digging AND using the headphone jack, no idea, why they are gone on all new models. So thanks for reminding me, that it’s still one of the best out there. Question remains which one to get, when it dies at some point haha

Great video. I went from an S10e to an S22 Ultra about three months ago. Had the S10e for just shy of three years and it still holds up well against my S22 Ultra. I'd say the improvements are in the battery life, audio quality (on the Ultra Variant), and the higher refresh rate screen. Having the S Pen helps with productivity and creativity, but it's not what should sell you on the Ultra. My brother is using my S10e now and doesn't have any complaints besides battery life, and the speaker quality. But the speakers have had some dust ingress because I work mostly in factories with lots of metallic dust. Otherwise the S10e looks and performs like new. Camera wise, the S10e still punches above its weight. I'd say the wide angle stills are better on the S10e, while the wide angel video on the S22 Ultra is better. They basically trade blows in every performance category you could think of.

that was a very good test. on the other hand, in the images of the s22 series, the grass is always over-sharpened and thus many details are lost. and the whole picture is in focus. no core development since s10. I switched from s9+ to s22 ultra, but I wasn't so happy because the ultra underperforms in many things. the pictures are not more detailed, there is no iris, so it does not recognize my head in the dark, only my fingerprint remains, no jack, no heart rate monitor, no sd card. so a lot of things were taken from the newer phones, even in terms of software. when customizing the sounds, so far there was a tube amplifier and surround mode and two sliders for the bass and treble, and the vocals don't have these, and the dolby atmos also makes the sound very dumb. I wrote with a translator, I apologize for the mistakes.
