"Upon us all, a little rain must fall." George Harrison of the Beatles lamented that Zeppelin had no ballads... so of course they made a helluva one.

Dude, that must be one of those fake rock legends, i mean, it doesn't make no sense at all Led had Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Thank You, Tangerine and Going to California before they made The Rain Song Or George just simply didn't listened to Led and said that based on nothing

Those sawing cello chords that graze your soul and the fat piano chords that make any defense indefensible, those untouched are beyond reach. When I want my cheeks drenched with warm tears of joy, I turn to this.

@@StillColour To complete it a bit, like many bands of the 60s, 70s, like The Beatles, King Crimson, Genesis etc. Led Zeppelin used this strange keyboard: the Mellotron. In a way, the first sound sample player. It worked with magnetic tapes on which were recorded the sounds of flute, strings, and choirs... Watch the demonstration: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKSopKJvf8aamrM

Although fairly unknown, JPJ was a real backbone of that band. Any other instrument you hear other than drums and guitar is him.

I've always thought this was among their best, most creative songs. It's definitely one of my favorites. The lyrics have a lot to live up to, honestly I could just listen to the music to this song for hours, but they come pretty close. Some of their best lyrics.

Short answer to all your questions about the possible meanings? The answer is YES! It is whatever it means to you. Zeppelin is always about mood/emotion. As I've mentioned to others, this song is moody, melancholy, and triumphant all at the same time. It is my favorite song of theirs and always makes me cry with it's beauty.

@@StillColour Since you asked.... :-) I've heard this song a bazillion times and got the gist (I hope) without ever really analyzing or parsing the lyrics. I think the first time I tried to understand EXACTLY what was being said was while watching your video. So, I just listened closely again and here are my conclusions: -- The "protagonist"(?) was at a low point (his winter) "I never thought it would ever go" -- He found a new love and now is in figurative heaven (his spring and summer) -- Yet, there is a sadness to the song, because: -- 1) The love is so strong that it hurts -- 2) Part of that "hurt" is the fear/acceptance that one day "a little rain must fall" IOW, the "rain" most likely is a call back to the chill of winter.

A lot of people recommending the version from Song Remains the Same.. which is spectacular, but if you want to check out a full orchestral version of it - No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded has an absolutely spectacular version of this and many other songs. Sadly, no John Paul Jones or the late John Bonham, but some very gorgeous versions of the Zeppelin catalogue, and even a couple original songs for the tour.

Check out the extended live version from the 1973 the song remains the same concert from madison square garden and WATCH them do it. incredible. that orchestra is john paul jones on the keyboard. There is non concert footage in it. Fun fact: George Harrison (of The Beatles, of course) once went to a party for John Bonham (in which everyone who attended ended up being thrown in a swimming pool - But that’s another story). He happened to ask Bonzo why it was that Led Zeppelin never seemed to do any ballads. Bonzo went and told Jimmy and Robert and they came up with this song, which reportedly uses some of the same chords that Harrison utilized in his song “Something”.
