Whether they can afford both or not is a good question but if I had to choose I'm taking Corbin Burnes. We need a true ACE on this staff for as long as we can. I love Santander but our system is full of outfield prospects and talent. Not the case with starting pitching. SIGN CORBIN BURNES!!!!

Nobody forecast that the Orioles starting rotation would be decimated. Corbin Burnes being the only---knock on wood---SP not to have some injury to land him on the IL. That said, the bullpen is being taxed too much thanks to the other starters not going deeper in games (making it to the 5th or better). I know it's a brutal situation. Seeing how this plays out for the next month plus will be interesting. Keep winning as much as the Yanks, I say we end up either as the AL East champs or the top WC spot.
@homebrew17092 ай бұрын
Even when the starters DO go deep and pitch well (Kremer on Tues.), the bullpen seems to find a way to cough it up (Burch Smith on Tues.). Seems that, no matter which moves Hyde makes, the guys out of the pen are at least putting way too many runners on base, if not giving up runs all together. Even Cano has had a material regression from his 2023 performance. There’s just no one in the pen right now that can be relied on to get 3 easy outs.

There should be no reason Burnes isn’t an Oriole after this season. No other team that’s in a truly competitive position can afford a big contract more than Baltimore. They should easily be able to match any team’s biggest offer without thinking twice and still wouldn’t need to worry about paying their young stars until the tail end of that contract
@drewc7712 ай бұрын
I know it seems easy, but the reality is you can't just throw tons of money at every1, especially in Baltimore. Only have so many resources. There's a huge risk in any big long term pitching contract, and many of these contracts have ended up disastrous for the teams agreeing to them.
@st3v0182 ай бұрын
That is just it, you are correct. Yet for some reason no one outside us Baltimore fans and some local reporters truly believe we're gonna resign him.

I think pay Santander,let Burnes go. Remember there's 4 or 5 great pitchers rehabbing. Even if only 2 are efficient next year with Grayson, Eflin, and the Mountain coming back, this team has a chance to have a great rotation and bullpen. Santander's hitting and fielding are hard to come by. Plus Adley,Gunnar,Westburg and Cowser will one by one will come into their 2nd contracts. A lot to sacrifice for one pitcher over the long haul

I couldn’t find the exact number but I remember Bob Haynie saying on the fan that it was around 30 million. 100% Orioles Magic. Gunnar hit into a double play without question. 3 run lead, bases loaded nobody out, you concede the run all day, they were even playing regular depth so you know that was their focus. Then, not only does he go to third instead, but that was probably the nice play he’s ever made with the glove in his big league career. That ball gets through 9 times out of 10, and it’s even more of a tailor made double play ball with Seager playing right up the middle. Then, Tony is clearly looking for a breaking ball, Palmer was 100% right, but he was sitting on it bc Abreu already hung a few of them which is why he didn’t throw a single slider and it took 3 straight heaters for Tony to say, “okay, it’s heater all day here, he’s afraid to hang it, 2-1 count, he throws me another fastball and I gonna make him pay.” And even though it was 6 inches above the zone, Tony murdered it. That’s Orioles magic all day. Too many things. And I gotta be honest, I think Tony has officially crossed over to a new category of Orioles players, the kind of company named Palmeiro and Murray, especially when it’s that sweet left handed swing on the high fastball for game winning, game tying, three and four RBI homers. Anthony is entering elite company when it comes to the city of Baltimore and the Orioles, and might be becoming the most important Oriole. The Yankees walk off last year, this 8th inning slam against Houston, who we literally have not beaten all season, and if those two aren’t the Orioles versions of the Evil Enpire, idk who is, and hes only 29 years old. Which is young as hell by today’s standards when it comes to keeping a bat in a lineup. I know one thing, we will know if I’m right, without question, inside 10 weeks from today. Fingers crossed. - and if you think the crowd didn’t influence his decision to go to third and prevent a meaningless run, if that’s not Orioles Magic, idk what is…

Angelo’s burned this city for YEARS. They are set up for years to come with the talent. Now you have to keep the right ones. It’s gonna mean that ownership has to be willing to spend money. Maybe not like the Yanks/Dodgers, but you need to be upper middle of the pack. They’re not a small team market like they say. We were top 10 in payroll when Duquette/Buck were here at one point. We have better players now. Pay the guys that should be here for a long time. Gunnar, Adley, Holiday, etc. I know it takes 2 to tango tho and Gunnar/Holiday agent is a prick. But be willing to spend unlike the Angelos’. These players could create a whole different team than what the O’s have been for many years now.

Bradish and Means must be part of the plan moving forward and hopefully Bautista too. Grayson and Eflin too. I remember when Paul Blair hit first pitch over center wall at Shea stadium opening game of 69 series and when Brooks robbed Bench and Rose in 1970. Also Altobelli and Grich and Baylor on the Red Wings team. This is a very deep team. I don’t like they traded Austin Hayes but saw it coming.

We just need to be smart about it. We aren't a big market team that can afford 100 mil+ player contracts. Build through the draft and keep home grown talent as much as possible as long as they still produce. I think the front office should bring in Buck as an advisor to Brandon and Elias for player evaluation.
@greeneggs72 ай бұрын
That is the mentality that Angelos ran the team with and is a huge part of why we haven't been to a world series in 41 years. 100m+ contracts are the way that baseball is moving, not just for the teams in ny and la. We will have to pay some guys contracts like that, and this ownership group can afford to. Michael Bloomberg is a part of this group, and he's worth 190 billion dollars. Steve Cohen, who has been throwing money around like crazy with the Mets is worth less than a quarter of that, I don't want to hear that we "can't afford" to pay guys anymore. We absolutely can, and we will have to if we want to sustain success.

Our best starting pitcher last year is out with injury, our best future starter is out with injury, the best closer in baseball has not pitched this year and went down right before the end of last year. Tell me what team in baseball would still be one of the best teams in baseball currently despite all those injuries. Coach Hyde is not out there pitching for Kimbrel. If u want to blame injuries on Hyde, please tell me why? This man took one of the worst teams in major league history from worst to first much earlier than u or anybody could have anticipated. Hyde didn't make the moves but clearly he has brought out production in a player like Jimenez who NOBODY wanted. Yes he has made some bad decisions over the course of the year. Just like every other manager. This is why a lot of Baltimore fans hate some of our fan base. Both with Orioles and Ravens. Fair weather and want to win it all overnight. Did u want to give some credit to the fact we have some of the best young talent in baseball producing ahead of schedule. Did u predict Gunnar to be a MVP candidate. Can u take a Rule 5 player like Santander has have him in top 3 for Homeruns this year. Can u explain what it takes to best the best homerun hitting team in MLB despite our payroll we dealt with under Angelo's regime? And don't say it's bcuz of Camden Yards bcuz our away record is better than our home record. All we do is compete and have competed for 3 yrs running since the young core came u...... as a real fan u should appreciate instead of glass half empty comments.
