Trans woman, Brigid Klyne Simpson, was not allowed in the women-only gym, Bodyworks, in British Columbia. However, the gym welcomed Brigid to attend the co-ed facility instead. That seems reasonable, right? Think again...

Almost the exact same thing happened to me last month. A transgender person with clear male traits presumed to walk into the women's area at my gym. He wasn't even presenting as a woman but was getting tons of looks from the other females in the area (who seemed uncomfortable). I texted my friend and boyfriend because I didn't want to go viral for being a transphobic Karen and had no idea how to handle the situation. Eventually, I went to the front desk and spoke to a trainer. - My gym has a separate women's area and a much larger coed area in the dame facility. The women's area exists to serve cultural and religious needs and as a woman I hate worrying about what I have to wear when I workout so I don't invite any unwanted attention.

yeah fair enough. If they're that bothered, they must sincerely be a creep. Like brett said, putting up with other men is something I put up with... as a man..... There are woman that are unpleasant to be around and there are men that are unpleasant to be around. If someone thinks that a gender defines any attribute of a persons character, that's their misunderstanding. There is no character trait that can be said to belong exclusively to a gender, so what these trans people are 'looking to avoid' in their being around men, can't be avoided that way, because it's based on their misunderstanding. Not giving biological women their own spaces looks creepy on the trans people, no matter which way you try to frame it. If there are places that are mixed and therefore welcome anyone, then it makes sense that trans people are allowed into those spaces. Otherwise, spaces should be separated by biology, not just if you are wearing the 'right costume'..... All I see in this case is a childish immature adult that's a bit of a creep, dressed up as a woman, trying to get into the room where they get changed. Now, that kind of person believes they deserve respect, because of the mainstream push against what they call 'transphobia'. There's genuine transphobia and then there's people that simply see through the guise that creeps are creating and calling it out as it is. People who can actually discern between these two, deserve more praise.

I think gendered bathrooms made more sense before homosexuality. I mean after we accept homosexuals, aren't the difference between a man and a lesbian in your bathroom minimal? The man might be genetially stronger and have an easier time assaulting you, while the lesbians would have to workout to be a threat. But at the same time you are aware of the man, while the lesbian could just suddenly appear in the woman next to you which you trusted to be a heterosexual and safe woman. Obviously few lesbians are sexual assaulters who'd abuse their equal gender opportunities. But few men would assault women as well.

30 years ago I was working at a very exclusive leisure centre. I used to teach step classes 4 times a week and there was always between 30 and 40 woman in each class and no men. Then this guy started coming, firstly once a week but within a couple of months he was at every class and he was always at the back, we assumed because he was a bit self conscious but as time went on he started inviting himself out with some of the girls and it was obvious that they were uncomfortable around him but just thought that he was a bit lonely. One night one of the regular girls signed in a friend and before the class started she asked to speak to me. She then told me that her friend new this guy from another gym a few years ago and he did the same there, had nothing to do with any of the men but made himself part of the girls friends group. He then started stalking one of them, even turning up at her home minutes after her husband had left for work and despite her never telling him where she lived. When she told him she was married and really not interested he turned nasty until her husband kicked the crap out of him. Having learned nothing he then turned his attention to one of the other girls, by this time his gym membership had been revoked, and did the same to her but she involved the police and got him stopped very quickly. I spoke to the manager who was to say the least apathetic so I decided to have a word myself which seemed to do the trick because we never saw him again although he probably just went to a different gym and started over. This guy was clearly dangerous and today any complaint would be taken seriously but back then I'm afraid it was very much a case of "fit girls in lycra, ooh yeah".

Okay, but he said coming out made him realize why men in gyms made him uncomfortable. But that’s not what the uncomfortable experience of being female at a gym is about. When we’re uncomfortable, it’s because of men who follow us around, stare at us, give unsolicited advice, won’t leave us alone to concentrate while we’re trying to work out, etc. When it happens, it happens regardless of what we’re wearing, and this behavior isn’t only something we deal with at the gym. I can say with 100% confidence that this guy wasn’t uncomfortable because he was surrounded by dudes who were sexually interested in him. I’m not being mean, I’m being realistic. This reasoning he gives isn’t an argument that he should therefore be surrounded by women and allowed into our spaces. It’s him wanting to be away from male bodies by putting his male body into a space where women are trying to get away from the same thing, and then crying for attention when they, too, feel uncomfortable. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Respect goes both ways. If you want respect from people you need to respect the boundaries put in place. And aside from a few assholes… (and I mean a very few) most people in the gym are focusing on themselves and they’re workouts. When I have a weight over my head or am resting I’m not looking at other people unless it’s to learn new moves. Like it’s not a big deal… and I’m in a coed with a women’s only section.

I don't understand why people these days can't just accept themselves, try to become their best selves, simply take what they have to work with & make the best of it... instead, we have a bunch of self-serving individuals who reject facts, dismiss anyone else's right to any sort of personal logic or reason, and demand that everyone cater to whatever self-image or "magical thinking" they've built their worldview around. If one wishes to change one's circumstances, it must start with building a personal mindset that has a logical causal relationship with the effect one desires to create... one does not get what one wishes for by simply demanding that wishes be granted

For those who suffer from mental illness it's not that simple. It's like telling somebody with depression to just smile lol. For the rest of them though they are just riding the fad, lying, trolling or are very very confused.

@@linkueicatastrophe9727I agree... without a doubt, for those with mental illnesses, the struggle is real. I'm talking specifically about the current trend that's creating so much cognitive dissonance. It's just really difficult for me to have sympathy for people who insist on engaging in destructive, self-defeating behaviors that are at odds with actualizing the outcome that is claimed to be desired. I get that people want things in their lives to be a certain way, and there's nothing wrong with that if they're investing THEIR time & energy in bringing it about. But the current trend of people making demands of other people to gratify wants & needs without having to earn or merit anything in return is behavior one might expect from children, elderly, or the infirm, but not from able-bodied adults. It is one thing to give someone a pass due to naivete, ignorance, or infirmity, but quite another when the person is adamantly, willfully, and deliberately behaving/acting in a manner meant to manipulate & coerce others into doing for them what they refuse to do for themselves

To use an anology... one can observe fire, watch how it interacts with things, maybe burn one's fingers to discover it's hot. One can test it in a variety of ways to discover how it works, maybe devise ways to use (or avoid using) it as a tool. It does not just magically appear out of nothing... there are discoverable unwritten rules, properties of composition, of cause & effect involved. One simply cannot ignore the facts that make fire what it is. The problem in our society these days (as I see it) is that people appear to be insisting they are entitled to outcomes (a result of following certain steps or process), but without having to adhere to any formula that might create it or govern it. It's like people "demanding" the "right" to play with fire however they wish, but without the requirements of creating or maintaining it and, especially, to have it free of the consequence of getting burned

As a man, it’s the same for us , you go to a gym to work on yourself , yes we do get a tad intimidated when you see big dudes all jacked up but I take it as inspiration , I’m aiming to better myself and not looking at what other people are doing . If I go to the gym it means I’m trying to loose all my fat rolls.

Stop using the false term "transgender". This word implies that a person has transformed from one gender to another, something which cannot happen no matter how much the individual wishes it were true. Call such people "wannabes" or an impersonator, or some other valid descriptive term.

As to the person crying about being called by their "dead" name, I believe you are correct that it is probably a case of the name still being on the card. But I believe the retailer is now obligated to report to the card issuer that the card is attempting to be used by someone who denied being the person to whom the card was issued. Your card was declined for fraudulent activity, go talk to your card issuer and get out of here.

My solution to being uncomfortable in public gyms: have exercise equipment in your house if you're really that worried about it. Also, from my experience in public gyms, a lot of the time, the people who are super jacked and have been going there for a while don't judge the newcomers, and are often times welcoming to seeing more people trying to get in shape and lead healthier lifestyles
