It's well beyond that. There is a point at which someone cannot repent even if they wanted to (It's our. I'm a Calvinist) . Also, most Christians naively think all sin is equal. Absolutely not biblical. This sin was immensely murderous. That's pretty hard to come back from, as Judas demonstrated. No one has ever repented to me for the damage done, but you are correct, repentance unto God is crucial.
