I think the idea behind the checkpoints with a tight timer is you can either do it the easy way where you risk/take a death or you can self challenge and try to do it in one shot with the timer as your limiting factor.

Tbh, as someone who is a way below average Mario player, I like speed run levels with checkpoints because I can still play the level all the way through and try to beat the timer but the checkpoints allow me to learn each section

If you ground pound a piranha creeper, they retreat around 2x further than they normally would if you regular jump on them.. So if your bouncing on a piranha creeper & he suddenly requires one of those pixel jumps to hit him on the side, try hitting him with ground pound before that moment & he'll be in a different spot

When you asked about the tight timers with checkpoints, I'm surprised you of all people dont realize... a tight timer in a level with checkpoints is ONLY for the competitive people who won't use the checkpoints anyway. The checkpoint is for people who like playing hard levels but dont always like starting them over from beginning. In other words the tight timer is only for speed runners to even use, otherwise it isn't applicable.
