This Piano's Unique Defect Makes it Impossible to Play

I recently bought a Ely Mello Tone Toy Piano that has a huge manufacturing defect that makes it pretty much impossible to play. I disassemble it and then try to figure out a way to actually learn to play something on it.

Great video! I noticed the color difference on the bars immediately on video and when you mentioned they even felt different, I had a thought cross my mind: Is it possible that this piano was NOT a factory defect, but instead was taken apart by someone previously? Maybe it was originally a toy for a child and those bars were damaged or lost, so a maybe parent took it apart and fixed it in a really slap-dash way. That might explain how the keys are out of order, the felt pads having no pattern, and the bars possibly being non-original replacements. Somebody may have done the best repair they could, without the proper musical knowledge to know exactly how to make it sound and look right.

@@Dbort Yeah, a botched repair job and incorrect reassembly seems to be the leading theory in the comments, and the two wonky notes with different metal rods give some tangible evidence to support this. I think I agree that it's what happened.

@aSongScout Not to burst your bubble but there is nothing impossible about a piano with two middle C's. It's not much different than having an organ key rack extend side ways instead of being a different rack. The issue is you used a straight forward approach without putting any logic into pattern analysis. Not to mention nobody is going to be performing anything worth noting on something that small anyway. Give me a piano with 5 middle C's and over 120 keys and i'll show you just how silly all this is.

Here's my theory: the piano was repaired by "someone" in the past who had no idea about pianos. The unusual key config was caused because they did not re-assemble it correctly after the repair. If you take the first C-E and put it on the very left of the keyboard, shifting the remaining keys (F-B) to the right, everything makes sense again. And the two different looking rods also point to a botched repair... those probably bent or broke in the past and they just tried to fit some other rods they had available, not taking into account that different material or thickness might not produce the desired notes.

Very "sharp" eye noticing a way to fix it, but since the white and black felt are mismatched I think it may have come from the factory like that. The rods are the strongest parts of the whole piano so more evidence that it was just horribly assembled at the factory (200 likes)

Little toy pianos like these CAN be useful in the studio. I've used similar ones to either mimic, or double glockenspiel parts... That could be something to experiment with? Don't hesitate to throw some effects on it as well. The right tweaked phaser, chorus, or reverb could maybe help it sound decent on its own?

Courtesy of a random YT suggestion I watched this. I swear I had this model toy piano at some point in my childhood. My grandparents had rental properties and they would get an interesting variety of junk left during clean outs. If it looked usable and cleanish it got brought to the house for any of the grandkids to play with. But the 2 middle c's reminded me of the toy piano none of us liked because why would we when grandma had a badly tuned upright and a well tuned organ no one touched.
