We had plenty of cabbages left at home. I was planning and thinking of making either a kind of a pickle or some dish using a suitable cooking method to preserve such lots of cabbages without letting them go to waste. Suddenly it occurred to me that yesterday our elder aunty told me that my brother had promised her yesterday that he would make a special kind of a pickle for her. So I changed my idea and took only one whole cabbage and made a coconut cabbage stir-fry to go with the lunch. I took only one cabbage because there might not be enough for my brother's special cabbage pickle!!
I was salivating when I set my sight on my brother's pickle dish. it was very reddish with yellow touch. This pickle was fully sun-dried for 2-3 hours and then stored in clean and dry bottles and can be used for a long time. Then only I realised that grandmother doesn't eat chilli or spiced pickles at all. So I also thought to make a less spicy pickle for her. first I added, chow chow, carrots, along with shredded cabbage into the bottles. Then I poured a brine made with beetroot and natural condiments, vinegar, sugar and salt into the vegetable bottles until they were fully covered. Eventually, after a few days of this fermenting process, the stored vegetable pickles started to get more enhanced with their unique flavours and even they started to become reddish pink in colour as well because of beetroot juice.
The next day evening, I thought of making a dish out of gram flour (Chickpea flour) to go with the evening tea. This special dish is called 'Dhokla' and is been made by steaming. it is a very popular conventional dish in our neighbouring country, India. My aunty taught me how to make this dish. When my aunt was working in the Middle East, she had learnt how to make it. To enhance the flavour of Dhokla, I added some of my pink pickles to it. Since the pickle was very salty and sour, I washed the pickled vegetable pieces in cold water before adding them to the dish. My dear brother surely got tricked by this savoury Dhokla that looked like a sweet cake and as he was under the impression that it was a normal sweet and buttery cake. But he liked this new taste and enjoyed it well too. Well, everything that I make is delicious to my dear brother!!!
Love you All!
