It's actually more than that. It's about 100,000 Russians and 20,000 Ukrainians. They live in peace here. They are all Orthodox as are we, so even though there are differences, it is not a major cultural shock for them. They have hiked up rent prices, but that's OK. For us Serbs, both Russia and Ukraine are Orthodox brothers and we want the war to stop. Slavs fighting Slavs is very sad (we had that in the former Yugoslavia).

@МиланПотић-б9х
@МиланПотић-б9х 4 ай бұрын
The number of Ukrainians and Russians isn't equal. There are much more Russians than Ukrainians. Reason is that Russians came in Serbia to do the jobs that they won't be able to do in Russia under sanctions. In Serbia came Russians with money while Ukrainians are refugees without money, and depend of social help that Serbia can't provide.

@@МиланПотић-б9х you are definitely wrong, bud. Belgrade is full of Ukranian tycoons also, , full of money, driving Bentleys etc, like all around the Globe. Serbia is the port all deserters from Ukraine and Russia settled in. Russians staying in Serbia are not Putin's but opposite , it was clearly shown by voting in Russian Embassy when elections were held, almost all votes against Putin's regime. It's the best place for both Serbian brothers, Russians and Ukranians, they are safe there, and it's one of the few places on the Globe where Russians can move to without visa and the only aircraft connected to Russian Federation from Europe.. I read some unofficial news stated there are approximately 200.000 Russians and 200.000 Ukranians settled in Serbia temporary. It was news about apartments renting stated when they came to Serbia , the rent prices went times 2 or 3, so domestic Serbs have a huge problem to pay it with the salaries they Got.. So it's waaay more than officials data.

The significant difference between both Russian and Ukrainian immigrants we have here, and the Middle Eastern immigrants we had in 2015-2019 is: 1) the Slavs , first thing they do upon arrival, they aske where the bank is, they go and open their account, with their personal documents they brought with them, and they start a small private business, ir get a job at someone else's business. 2) the middle easterners, and Pakistanis and Afghanistanis, the first thing they do is, they ask where the immigrants center is, they go there and ask for donations, money, free clothes, free healthcare, free housing in immigrant hotels. And they practice a religion that is not only different than ours but that explicitly preaches the annihilation of our religion and us, its believers. It's a big big difference. Reuters makes a bunch of interviews and stores them on the server, and then the news agencies create contexts for those statements and video coverage that is recorded in support of those interviews... all television stations have to produce content every day and watch what's new on the server and react when interesting content appears... There is no conspiracy theory, just a practical reason to save money and not have everyone travel from one point of the world to another...

I am pleased to see that many people have found their second home here. However, one concern I’ve noticed is that they seem to be making little effort to integrate into the local community. For example, I haven’t heard of many Russians attempting to learn the Serbian language. Instead, they are opening restaurants, shops, and kindergartens specifically catering to their own communities. This tendency to create spaces that primarily serve their population may unintentionally cause further separation from the native Serbian people. Additionally, Russians and Ukrainians have significantly contributed to the rising cost of living, particularly through driving up rent prices and influencing a general increase in prices across Belgrade and Serbia. I don't judge them for leaving their country, of course, but I do judge them for giving nothing in return and not supporting local communities but creating their own. It is a bit selfish.

Don't be ridiculous. They didn't came to Serbia to integrate per se, but to be safe from the harm. They are refugees and our guests, and they don't ask for special treatment. Some of them will leave, some of them will stay. I am seeing them on the street, they behave well and the fact that they speak their language freely on the street means that they feel safe. I am especially happy for the Ukrainians who found their security in Serbia. Serbia has not declared its intention to deport them back like Poland or some other NATO countries. This is not the first time this happened. There were University professors and even Academics who escaped Lenin's butchers and resettled in Serbia. We learned from them because they knew many things that you couldn't find in the literature.

Why do you expect thousands of foreigners who have only been here for a few years, and they are not always here, some come and some leave, to learn our language?! Our small town in France accepted 7 families from Ukraine. They had temporary housing in a vacation center. Now most of the people have an apartment and their children are going to French schools. There was a big welcome for these people in the beginning. They received other benefits, like free train passes to visit the countryside. As time passes, there is less interest in how the Ukrainians are integrating. There's no point of contact anymore (no more welcome lunches or social events at town hall). In a way, they have become invisible in our community. I don't know their happiness level here.

Serbia, like other countries in the Balkans, has a serious problem called demography. Those Russians and Ukrainians who stay to live in Serbia have children who will speak Serbian and go to Serbian schools, i.e. they will become Serbs. Maybe not so soon, but sooner or later it will be. The flow of capital, the opening of new companies, additionally fills the budget of Serbia. In short, a win-win situation for Serbia.

That is not true. The current government came to power in 2012 with the help of Washington and Berlin and has been their loyal ally ever since. The government is handing over Kosovo, mineral wealth, subsidies for foreign companies and much more to the west, in order to stay in power, because Washington and Brussels can easily replace them. A few days ago, the autocratic regime signed a contract for the purchase of French fighter jets worth almost 3 billion euros. Chinese planes with the same characteristics cost twice as much. It is true that the government did not impose sanctions on Russia, but when it comes to the political relationship with Moscow, the positions of Belgrade and Brussels are slowly approaching. The majority of citizens are not in favor of joining the EU, and only 15% are in favor of joining the NATO pact, while the majority of citizens support Russia. Of course they support the Russian intervention in Ukraine.

officially, there are at least 300,000 Russians in Serbia. Russian is normal on the streets of Belgrade. The Russians did not arrive here as refugees and they do not have that status nor do they seek it. They got here because the companies where they worked moved them here, and they are still well paid. Most of them have no contact with Serbs. One of the reasons is language. Russian and Serbian are Slavic languages but they are not so easy to understand and Russians are not willing to learn Serbian. The second reason is that Putin is popular in Serbia, but that is not the case with the Russians who arrived here, and that is why they avoid communication with Serbs.

@@Serlavian Putin is not "bad" or "good". In 1999, when he replaced drunken Yeltsin Russian GDP was 195 billion $ (and falling), now it's close to 2500 billion $ (and rising). He restored Russia as one of the 3 military superpowers in the World. This is why they can't stand him as the West was always onboard this irrational and hysterical "anti-Russian" xenophobia. From the Serbian perspective, Putin haven't done anything to strategically harm Serbia, he didn't sanction us, bomb us, annexed Kosovo, put his viceroy in Rep. Srpska etc. He sent us gas with the discount, provided political support, voted/vetoed for our causes in the UN etc.

In Serbia, there is a strong media and political influence of the West, it is not an exaggeration to say that Serbia is a client-state of the USA. Under the influence of the "soft power" of Western media, culture, fashion and pop-culture, a part of the Serb population developed the feeling that everything Western is the measure of virtue and of success. These people often develop a sense of contempt for their own nation, which, in their opinion, does not meet the standards of the West. People of such opinion fanatically accept all Western political and cultural attitudes to the extent that they turn against their country and people. Even when the West displays open propaganda or military aggression against their country, they still believe in the infallibility of the West and the guilt of their country. In Serbia, we call this phenomenon "autochauvinism". I notice a similar phenomenon among Russians and other non-Western peoples.
