According to data provided to Expresso by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE), "around 1100 visas" for remote work have been granted until May 17, 2023. Up until January, around 200 had been issued, as reported by the newspaper Observador; and until March 10, "around 550" have been issued. This means that in the last two months, close to 550 D8 visas have been granted, an increase of 70% compared to the period between January and March.

Does anyone know how people get around needing rental agreements so far in advance of arriving/having your visa approved? I can't start a 4/12 months rental contract and begin to pay when I don't know if I can go yet!

Lots of great information. Horrible sound quality, both in the interview and the voice-over. I knew about the differences from the D6, D7, and D8 visa from your prior videos, but I didn't know about the issues that came up over the first several months of implementing them. That was really god to know and makes me want to plan more about getting my D7. Great job, keep up the good work - fix the sound.

How about a student visa / residency permit? Seems easier & apparently you can do that by just attending a portuguese language school.

You fail to address the most important change: TAX. Digital nomads on a temporary 12 month visa are NOT RESIDENTS, they are visitors, and therefore are not taxpayers, a bit like tourists. Anyone else with a residency visa in Portugal becomes a taxpayer and is required to declare all their income in Portugal, including income earned in Portugal and earned outside Portugal, according to current tax laws. Every person has their own unique tax situation, and there are many expenses you can deduct from your tax bill, and you may even qualify for the NHR (Non Habitual Resident status). Any portuguese accountant will be able to advise and help you with your tax forms. You must have your taxes in good order if you want your residency visa to be renewed. Tax is the most common reason residency visas are not renewed. Same for permnent residency visa. If you have not declared ALL your income, don't expect to get permanent residency.

@@myitaliantherapyginafiore4414 Yes, there is still the D7, correct, but it’s now designated ONLY passive income, such as retirement pensions. You cannot use it if you have passive PLUS earned income, which is unfortunate. Up until the end of 2022 you could use the D7 with earned income too. So, unless you are retired or living off of let’s say a consistent income from rental properties, or something like a GIC (Canada)…. Then you won’t qualify for the D7 anymore.

@ExpatsEverywhere

Not sure what you mean. Visa laws and tax laws are separate matters. The visas have a pretty straight forward requirement. How people get taxed when they live here on whatever visa type is a different story and that generally needs to be done with the consultation from a tax specialist/accountant. - Josh & Kalie
@JenShea

Thank you for the video. Canada has often been compared to Portugal just as Gonzalo suggested, for being welcoming and for having such nice people. I remember when I was heading for my 3-month stay, I had 3 separate people tell me how much I will love it there, and how the Portuguese people are like Canadians. Yes, and no. The Portuguese are a bit more reserved (which I like) at first, but then they’d welcome you into their home… which is a little less likely in Canada… in that way Canadians are more reserved. But then again, there is a lot more negative influence, such as worry of personal crime… we see so much of, in the news from the US. I failed to see what was mind-blowing but you both delivered with smiles on your faces :). LOL

@@ExpatsEverywhere Ahhh, SIM! Indeed that is something! You were smiling when you said mind-blowing and to me (cultural thing maybe?) mind-blowing infers something good. To me this is something that,like you just said, is NOT good! I think they should have switched the visas in a 2 or 3 ‘step’ process. Like Brexit. People had a lot of advance warning in what the changes were going to look like and they had time to ‘get in’ ahead of those big changes.

@@JenShea I guess for us, it's neutral in terms of the news. One because we're already here so it didn't change our plans and two it wasn't 70% of people had to abandon their plans completely, it was they had to change their plans. It just seemed like A LOT of people more than anything. I guess the buffer was really the fact that for a couple months some consulates (I don't want to say most or all) were still issuing D7s after the law came into effect. - Josh

i think everyone can agree the worst part of D7 is the rental is needed prior to applying. by the way do you happen to know if passive income earned through Crypto is acceptable for D7? Not that it matters for my certain case but it would be interesting to know if Portugal considers Crypto as an acceptable revenue stream for passive income. It would just make me love Portugal that much more.

Great content, thanks. What about the minimum stay requirements for the residency? Is there a way to spend 183 days in the country a year and not lose residency? We've heard many accounts that you need 8 months a year for first two year permit, and 9+ months a year for the 3-year renewal. If true, I wonder if there's a legal way to visit family abroad while still keeping tax residency (183+ days a year) in the country.

There is a little known part in Portuguese immigration legislation that you’re allowed more time away due to business, social, cultural or family reasons. I understand the process is to advise SEF before departure stating reasons for extended absence. "Article 85.º - Cancellation of the residence permit" - paragraph 4
@tinglestingles

"Article 85.º - Cancellation of the residence permit" - paragraph 4 below ... - 2 - Without prejudice to the application of special provisions, the residence permit may also be canceled when the interested party, without reasonable reasons, is absent from the country: a) Being holder of a temporary residence permit , six consecutive months or eight interpolated months, within the total period of validity of the permit; b) Hold a permanent residence permit for 24 consecutive months or, within a period of three years, 30 interpolated months. 3 - Absence beyond the limits provided for in the previous number must be justified by means of a request submitted to the SEF before the resident leaves the national territory or, in exceptional cases, after leaving. 4 - The residence permit is not canceled for citizens who are absent for periods longer than those provided for in paragraph 2, when they prove that during their absence from national territory they carried out professional or business activities or activities of a cultural or social nature.

@@tinglestingles weird loophole since it sounds it covers almost everything. #4 seems to mean that even if you don't request, it won't affect your residence permit (although nothing is said about renewal). I wonder if people have used these exceptions before. Our only need to travel outside of Portugal would be to visit family or attend to family emergencies.

@donnacosta5633
@donnacosta5633 Жыл бұрын
If you have filled your tax forms properly and on time, and did not try to evade tax, your visa will be renewed speedily. Don't forget to declare your KZbin income too, it should go under royalties. You may have to be registered as self-employed and declare ALL the income you recieved from ALL sources, including income earned outside Portugal. Irregular tax situations is the most common reason for visas not being renewed. Tax is what pays for the lovely portuguese lifestyle Yutubers talk about and people who evade tax are frown upon. That's the simple TRUTH.
