I remember mine. Got it for $50, tested it before taking it home, worked fine. Got it home never turned on. Didn't realise it was the water cooled model when I got it. New it wasn't going to be good. Removed the CPUs and most of the capacitors fell off. In the end sold the computer to someone who wanted the case.

Having used a Powermac G5 for a few years I was SCREAMING at my phone about how the fans would run at full speed until the air duct was put back. Almost left a comment correcting you until I saw 22:11! Glad you figured it out. Enjoy the G5!

I use to fix these when they were in warranty. They had a notorious issue of leaking and also were difficult repairs. And worst yet the power supply is on the bottom. Horrible design

They shouldn't have been water cooled in the first place, really. But they didn't leave themselves a choice with the airflow on that case. Form over function is Apples design philosophy.

I used to fix these a lot when I also use to sell them as second hand / used / refurbs. I have seen worse corrosion than that - not boasting, just saying. The worst PowerMac G5 was the late 2005 model, where you have to pull out the CPUs *AND* logic board, just to replace the power supply.

@@justinvzu01 Liquid cooling was just a commercial move to sell stocked G5s in bulk before the arrival of Intel Mac Pros. There is not a single G5 that needs LCS to function. The large heatpipe heatsinks were sufficient and in the Apple and IBM G5 servers the heatsinks were even smaller.

@@aa-au Yeah those ones were freaking stupid. I have replaced a few of those... Recently had someone bring me a powermac G5 for repair at my shop. I took one look at it (water cooled) and told him to take it elsewhere.

So glad this video came out, I was worried we'd never get to see what happened to this thing! That coolant is so messy lol. I ended up getting my own G5 (air-cooled) but it wouldn't boot, ended up having to reflow the U3 chipset on the back of the motherboard to get it working, most likely happened due to bad thermals so I'd say you might want to consider repasting it and replacing those plastic clips holding on the U3 heatsink with some proper screws and bolts. Great video as always, this was fun!!

fun fact, aside from using automotive grade coolant, the pump and radiator assembly was built by Delphi Automotive, which is a radiator manufacturer owned by GM.

If I remember correctly the radiator and electric pumps were from GM as well. The radiator I want to say was the same or at least very similar to a transmission cooler from a GM truck of the time.

Say what you will about Mac's from this era (for example, they're overpriced and underpowered, make terribly stupid design decisions on things like user peripherals, and focus far too heavily on form over function) but the first time I saw the G5 on display at Best Buy I was utterly captivated and in completely in love with the aesthetic. The G5's design philosophy was so ahead of it's time that it would happily sit beside any modern "clean" build today. I'm also convinced the G5 played a huge part in influencing so many of us modern PC builders, because once we all got a good look inside of a G5, suddenly everyone became self conscious about that rats nest of cables we called PC's, and we all wanted to strive for that tidy and cable managed look the G5 had.

This brings back memories… I built these in Elk Grove California (close to Sacramento). I was a “failure analyst engineer” on the assembly/production line for the “Quicksilver” G4’s to these G5’s and when these came in I was the only one “not drinking the kool aid”. Everyone was all “Apple makes THE BEST computers ‘cause they’re so fast they have liquid cooling!!!” and I was like “……🙄 they’re liquid cooled because the G5 is a colossal piece of s**t, notice how there is no G5 PowerBook and the last batch of air cooled G5’s PowerMac’s would barely pass their tests and were overheating. Why isn’t there a 3Ghz G5?!” and everyone was all “how DARE you not drink the Apple kool aid!!!” and I was the “I’m just stating facts” guy ‘cause I was always one of those nerds that focused on the CPU’s in computers. I knew Apple had to make a big change and their “RISC is better ‘cause it carries more bricks in the wheelbarrow on each trip” B.S wasn’t going to convince dumb people and Apple fanatics forever. Then the great Intel change… 🤓 Funny thing is… I have a Mac today as my main PC. It’s a Mac Pro I upgraded with dual 3.5Ghz and 12 core Intel CPU’s. I love that “cheese grater” case design. No idea why people call it a “cheese grater” though, the new Mac Pro is the cheese grater if you ask me… ::shrugs::

I designed a 3D printable AIO bracket for my late 05 2.3Ghz DC G5. The bracket can mount a corsair H60, H80i or H100i liquid cooler to the G5 CPU directly. The whole project is on Thingaverse btw, but it's currently work in progress. The bracket is also (although I haven't personally tested it as I don't own a Quad) compatible with G5 Quad systems, provided you devise a method to mount the radiators for dual AIOs, Alternatively you can use a dual pump block and single radiator as used in older Dual GPU AMD Graphics (I have seen some that use the same corsair mounting layout and would thus be compatible).

The only information on the fluid used that I found was that it's propylene glycol, and the corrosive properties stem from it degrading over time and from heat, which can produce organic acids.

It's basically a common car antifreeze. The safety datasheet lists mostly ethylene glycol, some denatoneum benzoate, and misc safe ingredients (water). pH of about 8.0.

Well, I wonder why it's so corrosive then, because antifreeze usually contains corrosion inhibitors and is made to be not corrosive to most metals used in cars, including steel, copper and aluminum. I mean the guys here act like the cooling system was filled with pure sulfuric acid.

You can still use cpu without that capacitor. They are only for filtering noise, so it will still run without it. Other capacitors will filter enough.

Only Apple would put corrosive and highly conductive cooling liquid in a PC and to top it off, the PSU becomes the drip tray in case of a leak. Brilliant made to fail engineering.

From what I know, this was one of the first water cooled PCs, so they made a lot of mistakes (like using car coolant, cause PC liquid cooling coolant wasn't invented yet lol). Also the PSU being on the bottom is because the original G5s were all air cooled, so that wasn't an issue (the were basically forced to liquid cool because the IBM CPUs were so hot, of course they then switched to Intel after).

@@seshpenguin If the internet is correct, the liquid cooled G5 came out in 2005, which is the same year I built my first liquid cooled PC with components - and cooling liquid - from Aquacomputer. Yes, those were probably the early days of liquid cooling but if a (back then) small German company could come up with lasting components and a non-corrosive liquid, Apple should have been able to as well - especially considering the hefty price tag of a G5 back then.

12:55 Ken jests, but you actually _could_ get an ultrasonic cleaner. Sure, a Crest might be expensive, but there are mini cleaners for things like jewelry or glasses for $50. There are even some for under $20, but those are likely to be fake af. 13:52 You could try sticking the cap that fell of in an ESR meter and find its ratings to find a replacement. If it doesn't work and the meter can't detect it, you could use pogo-pins to check the same cap from the other CPU board.

@@JaredConnell Well, I as a complete amateur with help from my dad managed to do it poorly, but it was very usable. So you should be able to do it too. But I didn’t have a proper IO shield cutout and no proper motherboard mounting plate. It was all cobbled together.

At least on most modern systems you can't mix CPUs on a dual socket motherboard and the motherboards also often have a cpu 0 and a cpu 1 socket where if you are only using one cpu it must be in the cpu 0 socket

Liquid cooling was just a commercial move to sell stocked G5s in bulk before the arrival of Intel Mac Pros. There is not a single G5 that needs LCS to function. The large heatpipe heatsinks were sufficient and in the Apple and IBM G5 servers the heatsinks were even smaller. I disassembled LCS from my 2.7Ghz and mounted the classic heatsinks. The 2 ° G5 at 2Ghz has very efficient air dissipation and the iddle temperature does not exceed 48 ° celsius and 60 ° at maximum continuous power for 3 hours during the summer in a room with 28 ° celsius. The very first G5 built at 130nm (like the Pentium 4 Northwood) were very hot but let's remember that they were always 2 cpu. Then came the 90nm G5 970FX versions and the temperatures dropped further. In 2005 the 65nm technology allowed to insert 2 cores in a single die, and Apple presented the G5 Dualcore (1 physicalcpu) and the Quad model with 4core (2 physical cpu), it put the crap of LCS in it and it passed for a super computer (it was equally so if they had air-cooled it but breakdowns would have been rarer and those who spent 3900 dollars for a Quad would have spent 2499 dollars for the Intel version the following year)

When the 8-Bit Guy talked about this, he showed the fans constantly going full blast and sounding like a hurricane. It was really funny when he talked about how he had an Intel-based Mac Mini (released just a few years after this big beast) and yet it was more powerful than this big, heavy, noisy giant. At the end, he wondered why anyone would want to even have this in a collection.

Lucky the CPU die has infill under it, that would save a lot of those processor cards. IPA works for some things but a cotton bud dipped in some vinegar dabbed onto corroded parts works great for tougher stuff. You generally don't even need to scrub, just let it sit and wipe it gently and the corrosion should come off.

The G5s ran VERY hot, and watercooling in general wasn't much of a thing for computers back in the early 2000s, much less in a prebuilt machine (I believe these were the first factory watercooled machines on the market).

I air cooled my DP 2.7. It worked, but it has odd behavior where, even after a proper thermal recal cycle, the system doesn't properly control the fans while running TenFourFox or other 3rd-party apps (the fans run but only at idle speed regardless of actual processor temperature) unless an Apple program (iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto, etc) is also running, at which point the system revs the fans up until temps are back to normal range and then properly throttles them to maintain normal temps so long as the Apple programs stay loaded. I have no idea what the deal is with that and I'm not the only person to notice this effect with an air cooled swap so I doubt it's something specific to me. Maybe it's just a Tiger thing? I haven't tried it with Leopard yet and indeed haven't touched it at all in a while (I have a DC 2.3 for regular G5 duties). It may be worth having another go with Sorbet or something to see if that improves things at all.

I have a late 2005 model G, that I got second hand with 10's of thousands of dollars worth of a myriad of professional audio/video/graphics production software, circa 2005/2006, and due to the nature of what sort of work I do,.. that thing has never become totally obsolete,... It can do so many things that my newer stuff can't,... either cause there's no acceptable equivalent software available, or cause I simply can't afford to buy it's contemporary equivalent.

I can see how he would plug in the system which was working before it was shipped without realizing it was liquid cooled and that the liquid had leaked. But what I do not understand is once you know it had leaked, why would you wait two years before trying to clean it up? It probably would have been in much better shape and take a lot less work just to clean up the liquid right away. Corrosion happens over time. Clean up leaks and remove bad batteries ASAP.

I was yelling at screen (amongst other people here), "Put that acrylic deflection board on! That will stop the fans blowing at full speed!" I believe the sensor is on the leftmost hole (to the front) where the deflection board has a small metal strip on it to activate the sensor. You can replace the sensor if faulty, but out of the hundreds of PowerMac G5s I've pulled apart I have never replaced a sensor.

That capacitor is not always needed on the CPU. I had a G5 CPU with multiple caps missing. Still worked fine. So you guys should try the original 2.5GHz CPU's in there. And I also recommend Sorbet Leopard for OS. 10.5 mixed with 10.6 and it is cool and fast.

I have an air-cooled 2.5 GHz, but that's because I put one of the CPU modules from a 2.5 GHz quad into a system that was originally a dual 2.0 GHz. :)

It's typical that a G5 turns the fans to max if the clear plastic isn't inserted, some of the models did this also on removing the metal sidepanel might a broken panel sensor :D. I realized that as I was ~15yrs and upgraded some for my uncle :P. regards from germany, nice videos so far I watched them ^^

I used to have a a dual core "water" cooled G5 tower. I luckily caught the leak before it got bad. It's just a horrible design... I'm glad they went to air cooled for my 2012 MacPro!! 🙂
