The American M50 Ontos is a very strange light tank with six recoilless cannons strapped to it. It was based on a utility vehicle, giving it a sort of pyramid shape. It was well-liked during its service life and it's a great vehicle in War Thunder, assuming you can get used to how the cannons are aimed. You do get some typical Gaijin moments with the HEAT rounds but it's overall a very fun vehicle.

It appears that you are firing all of the barrels at once because each barrel has a spotting .50 cal attached to them and it is bound to the fire button independently from the M1919 in the centre. You can choose the spotting guns under the weapons selector in the Y menu.

You can also key bind special weapons, and the 50s won't fire with the main cannon

What's happening is above each recoilless rifle is a special .50 that was designed to be used with the 106mm rifles. They have the same ballistic trajectory, they are used for aimming the guns. Ian McCollum has a video on one of them on his channel over at Forgotten Weapons. Pretty cool actually.

​@@xeon6038 What I am saying is that the .50 caliber ranging round does not match the recoiless rifles ballistics even remotely when I used it. To be clear I have every weapon individually keybound, I am very familiar with this games shit controls lol. Unless you can tell me it's been fixed, this simply doesnt work in the game. Also for whatever reason the ingame sight on the ranging guns doesnt even have mils beyond like 800 meters or somthing abysmal like that, so it's even less usefull than the roof .30 for ranging shots. Last i checked was a few months ago

Spookston I think you should do a gameplay video on the cm11, it’s truly a hidden Jem, it has the m1 abrams firing system, and an m48 turret mounted on a m60 body. This gives it a faster reload than the m60, it also makes up for most of the armor loss on the m48 turret by suiting it up in ERA

Fun fact about the M50 Ontos is that you had the ability to fire every gun at once which was requested by the USMC due to them wanting to use it as modern siege equipment for whatever they desired or to really go get at enemy tanks.

Fun fact, the gun is actually 105mm. But they deliberately wrote 106mm on the barrels and shells in order to reduce the likelihood that someone would put a 105mm round intended for a closed breech.

Pro tip: you can download a custom sight that tells you where each individual gun will hit at range and the order they fire in. Makes aiming a lot easier. I also bind the spotting rifles to a separate button

Ah, every time I see the ontos it reminds me of an old Vietnam vet named Charles who I always talked with at the bar. He was an ontos driver which was really awesome. He passed from brain cancer a few years ago, unfortunately. He was also the only vet from that war I knew who actually volunteered for the war and was there in the first years that started.

Something that may help with this tank in particular is knowing that it always fires from left to right with its barrels. so the first two rounds are the furthest two barrels first bottom then top then the inner left barrell than the inner right barrell then top right then bottom right. I also personally prefer having the secondary guns (the ranging guns) set to a different button myself. JUst thought I would try to help.

That terrible bomb drop at 10:25 was because of the new bomb release animation where the bomb is "slinged" away from the plane rather than simply releasing as it was before. The release animation adds a couple of seconds to the sequence, hence why the bomb actually detached when the plane was pulling out of the dive.

I'd like to see you play the Comet I (either the British or Finnish one). The forward speed is pretty high to suit your light tank affinity, but don't even try to reverse in it. The Comet's APDS also got nerfed in the last patch so it's harder to punish cocky German players, but I'm sure you'll still be able to do well in it.

you should do a video on the DF-105, it seems to be pretty broken with 400mms of penetration, good speed, a 5.0 reload speed with an autoloader, and lots of open space so most rounds at that tier just go right through you.

10:24 The StuKa dropped it while he was pulling up because any bomb besides the 1,000kg, when mounted on the center pylon, is attached to a swinging arm. When you press space bar to drop that bomb, the arm takes about a half second to swing out before it actually drops the bomb. Meaning with those bombs on the StuKa, you need to press the space bar BEFORE you actually want to drop the bomb. It’s an incredibly difficult habit to learn. If you’ve already learned the muscle memory of space bar immediately detaches the bomb, you will CONSTANTLY miss with the StuKas when dropping a bomb on one of those swinging arms.

I love the M50 because it was adopted by the US Marines as their equivalent to the Army's M56 and it is just the epitome of Marine Corps design philosophy. I can almost imagine the conversation that the board of those Water Grunts had to make it. "Listen up men! We need to build a light infantry support vehicle for the GI-rines. What ideas do you have?" The top four barrels have spotting rifles. Imagine a 12.7x77mm machine gun that fires rounds with the same trajectory as the shell. They have a tracer compound and will release a puff of smoke on impact. For whatever reason, default binds makes them fire with the cannons.

Funny thing about the ontos, the rifle caliber guns attached to the recoiless are supposed to fire ballistically matched bullets with the recoiless shells, meaning its supposed to use the rifles to aim. Unfortunately, they don't seem ballistically matched in game...

My favourite way to play the Ontos is using it as an anti sniper at really long range. If you're good at ranging shots or know the maps well enough to know the distance between points you can lob he or hesh down on heavies using your binos to fire from behind cover lol.

I could have sworn the M-50 was equipped with six .50 cals along with the .30, in order to sight in each barrel individually. Anyway, I had one 10-kill game, playing arcade. Then I realized it seemed to be dragging on, so I checked the scoreboard to see what my team was doing. That's when I realized I had just spent half an hour slaughtering bots. I was the only human player in the lobby. What a blow to the ego, man. Against Humans, my best game was three tank kills with two shells (the Sturmpanzer is hilariously powerful!) and one air kill and assist.

I'd recommend giving the Ram QF 3.7 inch a go. With all the issues solid shot has been having recently you'd think it would suck, but quite the opposite. It fires a 94mm shell weighing 14.5kg. if it penetrates a vehicle its like a blunderbuss of shrapnel. shreds anything in its path. if that doesn't sell you, 28mph top speed and 200mm of pen at 5.3 might.

The M50 is theoretically a monster if you can keep the gun positions in mind. For example, knowing your first 3 shots are fired from the left tubes tells you that you shoukd start with left peaks, opening the ability for you to fire while only exposing your weaponry and not your vehicle itself. Also, no, speed peaking is not a good idea with the Ontos unless you're behind someone since the enemy can kill you with relatively low caliber machinegun fire, meaning you have to aim and they don't for the most part
