Just to be clear, this song is a dialogue between a father and his son. The deeper voice is the father and the higher is the son. My favorite line is “From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen”. That’s the son talking.
@jujubegold
@jujubegold 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be misunderstood. But the song is a dialogue and the son is feeling unfulfilled and unheard. As much as the father is trying to teach his son it’s not reaching him. As well as the son can’t make his father listen to him. So true to the youth.

The killer moment for me is a moment most people don't even notice. The father says "Look at me," and, very quietly in the background, the son says, "No."

When I was young, I understood the "Son"'s point of view. The world awaited and I was eager to explore. Now as a Woman of 60, I relate to the "Father" and understand the emotional advice given to his child. After all these years, this song is still touching and gets you in the feels
@My2Cents1

I think the most important thing to take away from this song is to understand both young and old viewpoints. And as an older person, never forget what it was like to be young and feeling you have no direction in life, and that you want things to happen faster than they actually do. I'm a man of 46, and I young adult in the 90s. I remember feeling everything that he sings about in the Son's point of view. The restlessness, the feeling that everything is wrong with your life, nothing happens the way for hope for, and that you're never good enough. I chose not to have any kids, but I have young nephews and nieces and I always try to understand what they go through. All I can say to them is that it will pass - of course they never believe me because I'm an old man and out of touch. Then I tell them, I was their age in what feels like a week ago. And when they're my age they will feel the exact same thing. Where did all the years go?

Cat Stevens was one of the greatest singer/songwriters and a Folk Rock legend of the early 70's. I was a 17-year-old junior in high school when this came out back in 1971. Today I am a 70-year-old😼😽🙀 senior citizen enjoying the music of my youth once again with this lovely reaction channel couple. The Father tries to tell his son. To take his time and think a lot and think about everything you got because you'll still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not. The Son Retorts: How can I try to explain when I do, he turns away again it's, always been the same, same old story. This has gone on between fathers and their sons forever. It's told hauntingly beautiful by Cat Steven. Brilliant!

I was a sophomore in high school back in 1970 when the album "Tea for the Tillerman" came out and this song "Father and Son" became one of the greatest songs from that great album. The song is a son's coming of age. Telling his father that... "He has to go away." And the father telling his son with the wisdom of his years. He is not yet ready to face the world at this time... "Take your time, think a lot, think of everything you got. Because you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not."-Cat Stevens Can the wisdom of the years be enough to hold his son? Will stubbornness and hard headedness of his son keep him from staying? Is this youth gone awry? Or the parent becoming an empty nester? Many questions and many possibilities... Awesome!

This seems to be one of Cat Steven’s most personal songs. He was a sexy rock star, and people loved him. Crushed on him madly! He was actually in the process of going away from his father’s world at the time he wrote this. He later left the music scene, became a Muslim, and changed his name to Yusuf. He did marry and have children, happily. Now he has returned to music, and he’s doing it his way. He’s a family man, an older man, a man of a different faith, one who perhaps worried about his acceptance back into the music world. He did not need to fear. His songs of peace and love are welcomed by old and new fans. Now, as you noted, he’s the old man in the song. Love this.

My favorite Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf) song. A dialogue between Father and Son. The generation gap; applies to all generations. The young want to move on; the older folks want to keep them the same. (Obviously, not every person, but generally.) I saw him in concert in the early 70's. Just him on his acoustic guitar and a pianist. Amazing artist.

So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.

Gosh, I'm so happy to see this reaction! Cat Stevens was a real heartthrob back when I was growing up. I am so grateful to my 4 older siblings who exposed me to so much great music -- Cat Stevens being one of them. He STILL performs. He's a little grayer but he still has that same voice and he is a great guitarist. Another was Harry Chapin. PLEASE react to Cats in the Cradle (you'll love the voice and message!) and also his song, Taxi. Another heartbreak.

My husband was 21 when this song was on the airwaves. He tells me . at the time, that he was 21 and embarking on his education , career and his life, so the lyrics really hit home for him. He hadn't dated much as a young man and hadn't met his 'girl' yet as the sing posits, but did shortly after. His relationship with his own father was a complex one, and he feels, years later that the song presaged his future- and the Future of so many- so well, it is almost spiritual. 50 years later , he still talks about it.

I'm 46 (1976) and this song was before my time as well, but I remember that I first saw this video and heard the song around 2002 on VH1 Classic (which is now defunct, MTV bought VH1 out a few years ago). But I liked the song so much that I recorded it (because VH1 Classic would repeat half hour blocks all day). I've discovered a few other videos/songs on there that I liked, too. Another was "I Won't Stand In Your Way" by The Stray Cats. I was a kid when they were out so I remember their hits like "Rock This Town", etc, but had never heard "Stand/Way" until 2002ish. We first got DirectTV in 2001, so that's why I only was able to see old videos then. Before that, I recorded an MTV 80s all day block in 1995 on video. That was all I had, but it was great to see that old stuff again. It's amazing how barren life was visavis pop culture before KZbin came along. Now kids/teens/young adults can see old stuff that wouldn't have been possible before 2005. I remember the pain in the ass of uploading content on upload sites before YT.

Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) was an extremely popular and talented singer songwriter. His songs always dealt with the gentler part of being a complete person. His song Morning Has Broken is a praise to gifts given to the world, Oh Very Young a search for spiritualism, Wild World about the dangers and necessity of leaving home. He was always an advocate of peace and understanding.

I’m 70 and this song is a Dad saying to his son, “Don’t be in a hurry to grow up. Take your time listen and enjoy your youth! It only happens once!” Even though I’m old, I’m happy and wouldn’t change much, except trade my life for my wife’s passing. But then again, I wouldn’t want her to get lonely at times like me. It’s hard but there are folks that have worse! Then again a Dad isn’t supposed to outlive his son.

The song is about a father trying to give his son some life easy and take it slow don't rush things and a young son frustrated that the father isn't understanding how he feels at the moment and how big things are for him. It's someone who has experienced life verses soneone that hasn't and everything seems so big. In the end the son doesn't get the father and what he is saying and has to get away and experience it for himself and make his own mistakes because he can't or just doesn't comprehend what the dad is saying

I was just starting high school in 1970 and I had a huge crush on the handsome Cat Steven and adored all his songs even tho I didn't fully understand them at the time. I love them even more now at 67!

The most profound song I have ever heard. How is it that he could write this song at his age? How is it that this song can still bring me to tears so many replays later?

💕 H A P P Y N E W Y E A R !!! 2 0 2 2 💕⭐️ Shawn and Mel, I LOVE how you deeply you analyzed this song and deeply appreciated the message of messages to pass down, or as Mel called them “jewels”. I used to call them nuggets. ☺️ 💝 ⭐️ Yusef and Cat Stevens is a gift of storytelling from the late 60’s and 70’s, and one for whom I’ve loved since then! ⭐️ My two favorites are “Moon Shadow ” and “Morning has Broken.” The former of which, still chokes me up, and makes me want to cry, IT IS THAT BEAUTIFUL!!!! ⭐️ 💕 With much love, always ~ Laura💕 ❤️ 🥰❤️ S and M SQUAD IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🥰❤️

I had such a huge crush on Cat Steven's when I was a kid. As was so mad at him when he gave up music for Islamic religion. I understand more now and highly respect his path in life

Hi you blokes.... I am a 70-year-old Australian who watches your reaction channel heaps, I am also subscribed to you. I know that you have lots of requests, but I would like to please ask you if you would react to a great Australian Sister group called "The Veronicas"...they are identical twins and have tremendous voices, they write their own songs and are superb (Like all Australian Artistes) ;) The content is: The Veronicas | You Ruin Me | Live On The World Famous Rooftop Thank you so much for your posts and reviews and I would like you to know that you make an old man happy with your comments and lovely diatribes...(Wow how's that for an Aussie linguistic content) lol Please stay safe and as we in Australia say...... "Aveagooday" !!!!!

Cat Stevens exploded on the scene in 1971 with his signature song "Wild World", from his debut album "Tea For The Tillerman", and was followed the next year with "Teaser And The Firecat...Both albums were packed with beautiful songs that would become classics...I just loved his music from the start..His voice is so unique and powerful, and is instantly recognizable from the first lyric...
