I have decided to lock myself in each region of runescape for 24 hours and progress my account and bank as far as possible. At the end of those 24 hours, I take on the hardest PVM content I have access to in that area, and if I lose, I drop everything I gathered in that region and start over again from scratch in the next region. I’ve implemented some rules to make this series harder than what it already is. I won’t be using tick manipulation in any way. I really want my supplies to matter on the way to my goal, so tick eating and prayer flicking will not be allowed until I reach my goal and will only be allowed while attempting the final challenge of the series. I’ll also be implementing a simple milestone system. Once I survive a region, I permanently unlock the ability to keep 1 item if I wipe. This will be multiplicative and will allow me to continue to progress the series at a healthy pace, but failing a region is still incredibly detrimental. Now you might be asking, what’s the end goal and to that I say… the infernal cape. I’ve never attempted this before, and I want to challenge myself in a way I never have with this series. I know Zuk is the hardest PVM content in the game right now, so that’s why I made it the end goal. This means that If I roll Karamja, Zuk won’t be required. Zuk will be immediately unlocked once I successfully complete all 10 regions in a row without failing and will be immediately challenged and if I fail, I start all over again. Regions will be selected at random (except at account creation, the first region will be Misthalin). I’ve also made a rule that once an area has been completed, it cannot be randomly selected again until I die. This stops randomly rolling easy areas with easier PVM content and stacking up permanent unlocks. If you all have any questions or think this is a hype idea, drop a comment or like!

I like the idea of randomizing the bosses. I'd say pick at the beginning of the episode so you know what to prep for.

The boss lottery sounds like a great idea 💪🏽 maybe do it already at the beginning of the episode so you have clear goal for the 24 hours. Bank tab for quest items is also a great idea. Suits the idea of progressing the account little by little very well.

Another idea. When you wipe, grab your items and add them to death's coffer. Shows a total (minus the death fee stuff) of what you've lost. Would be fun to see over time!

I like randomizing bosses, but i'd also recommend doing something like Tier 1/2/3 bosses and the bosses you get are pulled from from higher tiers as you increase the # of completed regions.

Hard agree. There's no way shit like Crazy Archaeologist and Corp should be in the same rotation. They need to be staggered by level, mechanics, or relative difficulty. But within that scheme, I think the randomizer is perfect!

@@TheOSRSDream As a follow up since you do like the idea... In a roguelike I generally don't think the intent is a hard brick wall at the first boss every time. With the way runescape is with slow progression, that'll be the case for quite some time if it was always the hardest boss required. Tiered bosses helps that yes, but it also may want you to rethink the reward for beating a region. With easier boses, maybe not permanently lock any item, maybe tier 1 bosses can only lock a quest item (whether it be a quest reward or quest requirement item). Tier 2 bosses might give a bit more freedom to unlock most non PVM items, and Tier 3 bosses let you start locking major PVM upgrades permanently. Though this could probably be refined, this was just trying to layout the concept of that. Mainly because I think it' may become too easy if you start locking a large number of items from constant tier 1 bosses.

As someone who has played a quite frankly obscene amount of roguelikes, almost every level of every rogue like has multiple randomized boss options, some being much easier than others, and others being a lot harder. Take the Cellar floor from TBoI for example, it has 12 different bosses, some are absolute jokes like Duke of Flies or Pin, while others such as Rag Man, Healdes Horseman and The Haunt are far more tricky, and sometimes you do just luck out with an easy boss. So randomizing makes sense and is perfectly in the spirit of the challenge, hell I think it is more in the spirit than having it just be the hardest. The only rogue like I can think of with entirely deterministic bosses with no randomness is Dead Cells, where you can fully plan out a run, and know which enemies and bosses you will meet.

another example of determined bosses would be hades and atomicrops but I think in all of the roguelikes I have played that is about the list

@@melvingleis4972Same. They're the exception, not the rule. And I'd say that this challenge suits the Binding of Isaac model much better than the Hades or Dead Cells model.

I think it would be neat to have quest items be tied to your progress too, so being able to keep one at the start, then as you kill more bosses you unlock more quest item slots as well. That way you can tie quest prep into planning too

I like the idea in concept, but adding complexity like that can turn off viewers. Settled made a video kinda explaining that. I think if he does quest items he should just keep ones that he gets to progress across areas and access more content.

​@@TheOSRSDreamyea locking yourself out of previous regions you cleared is already going to massively slow you down for questing. No reason to make that grind any slower and you might eventually need to take actions to speed it up eventually depending on how unlucky your zone progression is in runs.

Roll the region and the boss for that region at the same time. If you for example look at Slay the Spire the moment you enter an new Act you can already see which boss you will be facing. That way you can already prepare for the upcoming encounter. I also feel like it fair to keep certain quest items, like the ghost speak amulet. But the list of items should be very limited, only the essential items.

The randomizing boss idea is fantastic and in spirit, and I definitely feel you should be allowed to keep all items to complete a quest, or you'll barely finish any and highly limit what you can do by region. You shouldn't be forced to choose between keeping an item for 1 quest or a piece of important gear when you finally begin defeating regions

As far as quest items go, I’m inclined to say “keep the quest items” so it doesn’t drag the account down and block yourself out of quests beyond the difficulties you’re already going to face. In the case of quest weapons (arclight for example) if you wanted to keep that difficulty, you could ban yourself from using it outside the needs of the quest unless you defeat the boss for the region where the quest starts.

Agree with randomizing bosses, but I don’t like the idea of keeping quest items. I like the idea of locking quest items through wipes as part of the strategy for how to complete the account. “Do I want to keep this rune scim, or should I keep the Excalibur for account progression” Makes for a more interesting theory craft imo

Randomizing is a great idea that can make it so that you have higher chances of completing regions more. Regarding quests, yes keep the items otherwise most quest will not be possible really

I'm down for both randomization and quest items. Getting to keep quest items and rewards would give you a small, but consistent line for progression outside of skills, which would make the series more interesting. I would say the same thing about clue scrolls. I'm also a fan of the boss randomizer, but I think it needs to be tiered. You probably don't want to put Corp and Crazy Archaeologist on the same rotation. But once you clear the Tier 1 boss for an area, you can unlock Tier 2, then Tier 3! Idk if that's too much complexity though. And I do see the value of just having to accept whatever boss you roll. Since you have to win all 10 regions in a row, that means you'd have to live in suspense about whether you were gonna roll an easy boss or a hard one. And that would make the 10-piece a much more suspenseful goal!

I wanna note that I think you should be allowed to keep quest rewards, too. Most of them aren't that crazy, but a few of them are meaningful gear upgrades. Like, if you managed to finish the Fremmenik Isles in this gamemode, then I'd want you to be able to use the Fremmenik helmets. Same deal for Silverlight/Darklight. Since quests are so hard to do, it seems only fair to reward your effort in completing them. 🙂

Randomized bosses sounds good to me. If it was always the hardest content on the chosen region we'd be seeing a lot of wipes before you get any shot at boss kills which might get boring quick. Excluding quest specific items from wipes makes sense to me. You'd get nowhere quests-wise if you couldn't keep quest items (keys, documents, Arrav shield half, etc) between wipes - although anything else is fair game, even if it was being used for the quest.

I'd like to see three shifts: 1. Definitely implement the boss lottery, so that it's not the same target every time. However, I'd roll it only either at the end or half way through the day, rather than right at the very beginning. Depends on how you feel, I'd leave it towards the very end. It also may be interesting to include bosses you can't get to yet, and if you roll that one it's just an auto-fail? Roguelikes aren't always fair after all. Or not, but if you leave it to just 'easier' bosses, a run of good luck could see you facing Jad at like, combat level 60, which would not be a bad thing to reset item keeping progress. 2. From the way you mentioned being able to save an item with a 'save item' charge, it sounds like you're planning to make it a bankable thing you can spend whenever you like/have an item worth saving. Would you consider shifting that so that it has to be an item you got in that particular day, instead? IDK I just think that would be way more interesting than "I've got this one save token from beating the new rat boss, and I'm going to save it for 10 episodes so that the next time I get Asgarnia I can spend a day grinding GWD and save whatever item drop I get from there" 3. Is it at all possible to change the timer to be a countdown from 24:00:00 instead of counting up like 2d 14:03:29? I would like to see that as a change if possible. Make it a little bit clearer how much time is left.

Appreciate the answer and thought out response. The timer thing isn't possible to change unfortunately. As for when the boss is revealed I think at the very end is best. For the item saving if it could only be from that region I think it would make an already tedious series even longer, so that's not something I'm interested in implementing the way you suggested.

yes to randomized bosses as far as quest items go, i'd say yes you can keep them, but only for the quests. if you want to use it outside of a quest, you'd have to make it one of your saved items. for example, you can use the keris partisan to finish the quest, but you can't use it in toa or against kq unless it's one of your chosen items.

I like the idea of random bosses. I think there should be an incentive or requirement to work towards unlocking bosses quickly, so maybe once you beat a boss it's off the randomizer for that region until you beat them all or run out of accessible bosses? 100% agree on the quest items otherwise you lock yourself out of a ton of content for the early grind, and the hype will wear off before you get anywhere.

Quest item tab, but you can’t use the items outside of the quest until the quest is completed, and then you only use it in the region it is from unless you beat the region. (Example, the blessed silver sickle from Morytania, you keep it but can’t use it outside of Morytania unless you beat Morytania and choose it as your item) Also I think clue scroll steps outside of your region should be allowed once you beat that area, but you are only allowed to complete the step during this time, also STASH units may be filled only while you are in that region unless it calls for an item you cannot get in that region (I don’t know STASH items off the top of my head). Also you do not have to empty the STASH units after a wipe, but you cannot use the items in the STASH for anything other than the clue step, unless you have filled the STASH in that same 24hr period. Anything not in a STASH unit by the time you go to fight the boss is dropped as normal. So if you put an item in a STASH during one period in a region, you cannot use the items in the STASH for anything other than the clue step if you roll that region again.

I was thinking for my own account (if I get to it) I'll do the bosses progressively, weakest bosses first and move up once defeated, but the random bosses are so good for roguelike! I love that idea so much ^_^

Loving the content, Keep up the good work! I like both the ideas however some compromise with regarding when to select a random boss. I think selecting maybe halfway through or after instead of the start of a region as I see suggested is more in theme with most rougelike games I am aware of. Whichever you decide I will always enjoy following the series though!

Instead of random bosses, I like tactically choosing bosses. Easy bosses only let you take one equipment (and quest items) to the next zone, Or unlock items normally, but only once. It's wild to me that you spent 24 hours in the wilderness, training magic, and didn't kill crazy archeologist. I don't want to be too negative. I like the idea I just feel like having to do "the hardest PvM" in an area means the rogulike progression part isn't going to happen until you spend a bunch of episodes training

This is exactly why I'm asking this question for this video! Seems like everyone agrees randomizing the bosses is the best. As far as not killing crazy arch, there was literally not point when I rolled the region because anything I got from him would have been lost when I failed the region anyway. These first few episodes are going to heavily focus on account stat and quest progression over gear progression.

I really like the idea for this series. If you’re open to feedback, I think having in the top left corner Region: 3 for better clarity on how far into the journey you are, and changing the timer to a 24 hour countdown and remove the day because you already have the region counter

There sadly isn't a plug-in for a countdown timer like that, so this will have to suffice. I don't really want to clutter the screen more with words, having the gameplay is the vital part. The timer counter i currently have shows how many regions we've completed based off the number next to the d, and it looks a lot cleaner for viewing purposes tbh.

Sorry to hear about the bronchitis, glad you were sounding better by the end. I think randomizing bosses and allowing quest item saving would both be positive changes for the series. Random bosses would give more variety when you end up rolling previous chunks, and quest items would actually let you make progress in that aspect before endgame.

I really think keeping quest items will make this account flourish We want to see you randomly have to do Gauntlet or Vorkath. I want to see what kind of region roulette gets you Barrows Gloves for instance.

Have you mentioned if you can use your house or not? You should be able to stash stuff in your house to access from any region you can get to it from, as long as you dont die with it.

I think a certain rule has to be implemented for the bosses. Because on some region you have extra easy npc that are classified as bosses i.e.: Salarin the twisted. Would you include that in the roulette, or you want to keep the Roguelike , like a real roguelike: die , get stronger, try again, die, get stronger . ect.. Keeping certain quest item is a good thing, i saw @DelphinusPtolemy comment about having a certain amount of slot and unlocking more slot, i agree it could be interesting ( but might become confusing, i dont know )

I like the boss lottery idea. But unlike others I'm seeing, I think it would be better if you go into the region blind and don't know which boss you'll roll. Quest items being saved is a definite improvement. I think anything untradeable or unique that is required for quest progress and needs to be used/obtained in multiple regions should be saved. Any item that you get and use only in one region should not be saved, because you can just get it back later. Anything tradeable that you can get from something other than the quest isn't really a true "quest item" imo.

I was also liking the blind boss roll at the end of the region, so I'll have to see what everyone else thinks. For the quest items I was thinking the exact thing. Stuff like ghost speak amulet wouldn't count, but stuff like the plague sample stuff from biohazard would count as a quest item.

@@TheOSRSDream Oh I would 100% allow the ghost speak to be saved, because it's used in Ghosts Ahoy, but obtained in Misthalin. But say, Aubrey's notes from Rune Mysteries wouldn't be.

you could also turn it around and instead of focusing on it region by region. focus on it boss by boss and have them pulled from like different difficulty levels. Only be able to play in the region from the boss. it might be a bit late to change the format that much tho.

I like the idea, but I feel like it might help to allow some amount of level grinding before continuing to do roguelite runs. So far every episode has been largely spent doing unrelated leveling followed by a boss fight where losing is a foregone conclusion. Right now it feels like we're quite a few episodes away from reaching a point where beating a boss is possible, which removes the core tension that the roguelike premise sets up. If the goal of an episode is beating a boss, the episode should feel like a journey towards having a real shot at that boss. So far, the episodes have been about gaining levels for future episodes and then a token attempt to maybe do at least a tiny amount of damage before inevitably losing. I can only speak for myself, but I'd find the series much more compelling if you were starting from a position where you had a chance to succeed in a given episode.

Yea, I put as a rule to not be allow to pray flick unless I am fighting Zuk. This makes the supplies I obtain a lot more meaningful.

I think the reason you didn't hit for the first while was because you had 29/30 attack so basically just punching the boss for a while.

@@TheOSRSDream pretty sure it causes the addy mace to not give the buffs. So it was like punching the spider. Not positive but pretty sure that is how it works. Not enough to have gotten the kill, but maybe a few more hits.

Definitely randomize the boss, but roll it when the timer ticks over, like a boss room in a rogue like. As for keeping quest items, absolutely keep them, otherwise its going to lock you out of a ton of content.

The spear shop, didn't it sell a addy war hammer? How come you didnt buy that? Warhammers are a str only stat requirement now, and you had 30 strength.

It did, but the spear is a 4 tick weapon and the Warhammer is a 6 tick weapon

I think that you should randomize bosses, but I think you shouldn't kill the same boss twice if you come back to the region.

I think you should keep quest items otherwise this series will be very drawn out in the early game without you being able to beat bosses to keep chunks open reliably. How are you going to do gear progression with randomized boss encounters? Will all bosses be included in the randomizer or will it only include say the top 3? Are you allowing yourself to farm "demi-bosses" for gear before a fight as part of your time? Are you going to be able to farm the hardest boss after you beat a chunk to get a drop since OSRS bosses don't drop upgrades 100%? Are you able to farm for the item of your choice or do you have to take the first unique dropped?

All bosses would be included in the randomizer and since I'm going to be most likely rolling the boss at the end, it won't really be an issue if I'm grinding bosses for gear upgrades in the regions. Appreciate the feedback and support!

@@TheOSRSDream awesome full support on both no matter what you decide for specifics tbh. But if you want input I don't think skilling bosses should be included as a boss option to progress regions. Also to make it closer to a roguelike I would consider either rolling the boss at the beginning so you Know you can't farm that boss since it's in the final room but the others are open, or waiting till the end to roll and not killing any bosses until you beat the rolled boss with gear you created or got from mobs which then unlocks the ability to farm all the bosses you want.

I think being able to keep quest items is fine. It would take a ridiculous amount of time to complete all the quests if you had to not only get the correct regions in the correct order, but also succeed in defeating the boss each time just to advance. I also think boss randomization can be good, but you should be careful. Right now being able to keep an item is such a strong reward that every episode has stakes. I care about the boss fight at the end because it has significant implications on the rest of the series, but if you happened to roll a bunch of easy bosses early on that could quickly be taken away. If you're looking for constructive criticism on the videos themselves, I think it would be worthwhile to spend a bit more time planning things out/verbalizing ideas for what you want to accomplish in game. Stuff like that sets up the viewers expectations and provides a more cohesive story to follow than just talking about what you're doing in the moment. I don't really think it's all that much of an issue, I absolutely adore the concept behind this series and these videos are done quite well, just something I think would be worth thinking about!

I think you should keep quest items. And i think if you randomize the boss it should be more of a scale. Most rouge likes have a easy to hardest boss format. So for example i think chambers should have a lower chance to be rolled than something like alch hydra (ignoring the slayer req in this example). Also i feel like there should be a skilling clause. You started from 1s in everything and most of your time is spent skilling non combat skills like mining, farming, smithing. So it isnt really you "gearing up" for the boss.

But the problem is that all other rougelite games have something you scale into and states or passive items you unlock. By what you are saying he would literally need to start every run over again and therefore there is no progression....that is not what a Rougelite is, otherwise the quest item and randomize boss is good comments. Confused on what you are saying he should do differently.

Also one other thing. What do you think of keeping one combat item and one non-combat item. It would be very nice to see you get to keep something like a rune pickaxe so if you rolled an area where it was hard to get one then we wouldn't have to watch you mine with a bronze pickaxe.

This is a possibility, but there are several quests, like biohazard, that have 3 specific quest items needed in order to progress the quest.

@TheOSRSDream you can still use normal item unlocks for them. The quest slots are just nine extra slots that are exclusive to Quest items with the benefit that you can change what is stored in them
