@ardemus3 жыл бұрын
I'm not interested in drawing this up, but I welcome someone else to: You want more ground clearance to avoid bottoming out. You need fins for traction without being so deep they creating a rotary shovel. Finally, you want to spread the surface area of the wheel across the largest possible ground surface to prevent the wheels from sinking or digging into lose sand, similar to a snow shoe. Create wheels with 3 spokes, each ending in a kind of curved snowshoe (like you had a full wheel but cut away everything except a few ovals of tread). Use the largest gaps between the snow shoe hatches that can still can compact loose sand without letting a lot through. Elongate a few of the hatches on the snow shoes just enough to dig into sand, but no more. Think about which diagonals to use for the traction fins. I'd lean toward using the same angle on the two diagonals, but reversing it for the adjacent wheels. Other options include having the left match and the right match, and they can either create an arrow, pressing sand in, or a V pressing sand out. The last option is matching the two front, and matching the two back, but I fear that would create a tenancy to pull the front and back in different directions and encourage spinning in place in certain situations. Likewise, think about the contact pattern as the wheels rotate, so that you always have 2 snow shoes down, and curve the leading and trailing edges of the snow shoes so they contact smoothly and not on edge, particularly when starting from a stop.

I was.about to start a thread on a similar theme. - Larger diameter to get more ground clearance. - Bigger width to span more sand - Mesh surface to still have similar surface area despite larger diamwter and width. - Some regular "blades" that can shoot sand backwards.

Rear one which has traction spins, but front one which is in the air doesn't. As a system without traction or torque control, both wheel should spin with front one being faster. For me it looks like there is not enough power in battery to provide uniform power delivery to all motors, or the controller is doing bad job.

Also to fix friction problems, maybe adding something to the edge might increase friction, for example maybe putting certain types of tapes on the edges. Honestly there's a lot of different tests you can run with this to try and figure out what is the best and what might make one better than another. probably not, as the wheel turns it would create a force that could theoretically push the car forward, but it is very weak. then it would continue to rotate and make the exact same force in the opposite direction, pushing the car backward.

Actually, you can have non circle shapes that also have the same height from bottom to top at every orientation, so you can have even _more_ wheels!
@LucaBl3 жыл бұрын
@@davutsauze8319 nah for wheels the radius (in the 2D projection) has to be the same, not the diameter. Cause the center is fixed to the axle and with just the same diameter you don't have a fixed center but one that "wobbles around".

If anything straight wheels would be faster in a race. The wobbling wheels is probably better at obstacles that require extremely sharp turn.
@xl0003 жыл бұрын
only works if you need to turn when the wheels are in the correct orientation when you need to make the turn. Otherwise, it' s going to be worse. So if it's random, it's not going to change anything on average.
@maskedmarvyl47743 жыл бұрын
Very impressive. You do know of course that if you replaced the wheels with tank treads, it would get more traction and more surface area contact with the sand. I wanted to make such a vehicle with tank treads that actually wrapped around the entire vehicle, so that the full surface of the vehicle was in contact with the sand. I think that would be the best way possible to keep a vehicle from getting trapped in the sand.

I really think the spoked wheels were a completely separate class of wheel and should not be compared with the others. Firstly they scoop up sand with the sides of the spokes making them act more like paddles than using surface fiction t propel the forwards like the rest. and secondly, since the spokes had a square cross-section, the spokes spent most of the time with one edge against the surface it was contacting, dramatically increasing contact pressure and helping them dig into the carpet and the sand in a way the other wheels just couldn't compete with. So yeah, I think they would be disqualified from competing with the others.
@patrickhector3 жыл бұрын
It is exactly like comparing large sand-scooper tyres to super skinny racing tyres to see what has more traction on sand- would be more fair if he tested various terrains though
@hcrft3 жыл бұрын
beautifully done. you gained my subscription today sir.
@RefugeeOfReality3 жыл бұрын
Looking at the rules you made up in the beginning for a "fair" comparison the spoke wheels would have to be disqualified in the sand test because they effectively have a bigger surface area with which they interact with the sand! I wonder how wavy wheels with a shorter "wave length" would behave! Nice content :D
@celeron553 жыл бұрын
Wavy wheels also use their sides for propulsion. That's part of why they work better.
@sh4dy8323 жыл бұрын
going by that standard, there is no comparison to be made, since same contact surface and same surface texture lead to same performance. The key to winning this sand-contest is to maximize the vertical surfaces on the wheels and ideally cheating an increased surface contact with sloping edges to reduce the burrowing effect.
@strictnonconformist73693 жыл бұрын
@@sh4dy832 I’m having a crazy thought, not sure how feasible it is: imagine wheels with the same total surface area, but the part on top at any time flops over and adds more surface area actually touching the ground, which would either require some sort of hinge, or soft floppy filament to make.
