They were called the SD1 by all my mates as a kid in the same era. Also they were manufactured with cheap steel imported from Portugal. Made from recycled steel. Not British steel which supplied volvo and saab. It was a cost cutting exercise that failed. I love the car I had a early scalextric one as the lights and siren were on it slowed it down. Thank the lord for modern LED lights. Great video

My first car was an SD1, young people today can mostly only dream of owning and driving something that big after passing their driving tests.

We called these Rover Vitesse in the 80s famously pedalled by Tony Pond in the Manx Rally, also called them the SD1 because the Rover V8 to us was the P5. We called the P6 the Rover 3.5

I had the original Scalextric model from the 80s it was fairly slow if I remember also my mate had a Rover 2300 it was lethal in the wet 😂 great review makes me want to go back to the hobby but I know I’ll spend a fortune 👍🏻🇬🇧

Geeky point of interest, SD stood for "Special Division" which was BLMC's collective name for the design team behind their "better" brands namely Jag, Rover and Triumph ; the SD2 was the never made Mk2 Dolomite and the SD3 is the definitely made Rover 200 / Honda Accord

The “SD3” never existed. Some people decided to call later Rovers that, but the tag was never the real designation for any car.

The Vitesse was a common name of the poster car. In its day, all cars, except galvanised Porsches and Audis, rotted at about the same rate, and most had crappy electrics. That design is not the same as the contemporaneous model of the Plod car. Immediately most obvious, the wheels are bigger on a thinner axle track, but there are many more dissimilarities.

My next door neighbour is a retired traffic cop these were his main stay back in the day He like em I remember them for all the wings,wheel arches and sills i had to weld on them when I was a young man in the motor body trade My theory is had BL galvanized these and every model released after, Rover would sill be here now

Demise of British Leyland must have caused a huge shortfall of work in the welding industry :)

I don't really think that any other car manufacturers were really any better through the 60s 70s and 80s I started in the motor bodywork trade in the late 80s The first cars I came across with any significant improvements in build quality were MK2 VW Golfs and Polos Most cars today have some sort of light galvanising so they don't rust immediately Back when I was a lad the boss would take on a quick respray , one a week to tidy up 6-7 year old cars because rust would be breaking out on them I just don't see that anymore

The sd1 bit came from special division 1 the sd2 was a concept car that never made it into production it was going to be the replacement fpr the dolomite and the sd3 ended up being the rover 200/Honda Ballard the first one like hyacinth bucket had in keeping up appearances the replacement 200/400 was just the R8. I wouldnt mind the scalextric one id strip it down and do it oporto red i can have it on my dashboard then match my car. If im being really really picky and yes i probably sound like a anorak but scalextric have vitesse wheels on a SE where as it should have the standard 14inch alloys or if its like the police Vittesse ones they did have being a latter B reg car it should have the latter front air dam without the fog lamps and it would also have the rubber boot spoiler too also the exhaust is wrong it should have a S shaped tail pipe they were designed that way so it diddnt suck the fumes back in the the vents in the tailgate when i put a cherrybomb on my car it sucked the fumes back in because the tailpipe wasnt s shapped what im goimg to do on my latest sd1 is fit the cherry bomb in where the box is and weld the S on the end of it that way ill get the sound but not the fumes 😂

You forgot 'Jam Sandwich' for the cop cars too. Have to say I disagree over the Esprit, mine is not sticky as such but you do have to drive it, it's more akin to the old 70's and 80's cars that had no or very light magnets. Much nicer and take that much more skill to drive fast.

Well, I was born in 78. Rover V8's were always either P5B's P6's or SD1's. Nobody ever called all the Ford Escorts XR3i's or RS Turbo's did they. Nor all the Volvo V70's T5's.

@slot-car-dad9 ай бұрын
Also.. despite your derogatory comments about myself.. i will play along... your Ford Escort XR3i analogy doesn't work... because we all knew them as either a "Ford Escort" or an "XR3i" (if that's what it was) No one ever referred to them as a Ford Erika did they?? (the codename)? as far as i am aware the "SD1" was never sold or marketed as an SD1 it was a Rover 3500, 2600 etc , So i stand by what i said, I had never heard this car referenced as an SD1 until probably the last 15 - 20 years.. probably because i have never worked in the motor trade or had any connection with rover cars...
