I understand what you're saying, but not everyone learns the same way. When you have kids that can learn by sitting there and paying attention in the same class as kids who need to understand the practical application of what they're doing, one group is likely going to suffer in quality, and it's usually the latter. Figuring out how the kids learn best and grouping them like that so they can all succeed should be the end goal, instead we get this abomination where the answers are made up and the grades don't matter so everyone fails equally. Of course this can be offset by having parents at home who actually give a crap about how their kids perform in school and try to help them instead of playing victim every chance they get.

I gravitated away from math and toward English in my higher education specifically because math requires strict correct answers, while language can be massaged -- as in this video -- to mean anything you want ... or nothing at all. We used to say, if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. You're not supposed to be able to do that with math (or science).

I always hated math and still do. I'll never understand how anybody can find math in and of itself enjoyable. As an autistic person my teachers always expected me to be some kind of math savant, but I almost failed out of the slow kids' math class. Graduated with honours and advanced English classes, but still I just couldn't wrap my head around math. So, I'm concluding in my self-absorbed rant there that math is also ableist and my old high school should devote fifty grand to make math less ableist by giving _me_ the fifty grand so I can count it all using math (and then add it to my bank account). 😂

For instance, we had to maintain, update and balance a checkbook, pretend to purchase a stock we chose and monitor our losses and gains, setup a monthly budget for a household, etc. It was one of the best classes I ever took. I still remember a practical use for a hypotenuse because we used it in class to calculate how much cable we would need to install an antenna, and to get the angle of a staircase. I think that the largest majority of students coming out of high school need to learn practical applications of the subjects they are learning.

So many standards have already been lowered or relaxed to favor POC, from college entry to hiring, promotion, and awarding of contracts. We don't yet have the "level playing field" that POC have whined about for decades applied to all aspects of life. (Level playing field is code for "we want it easier to win") The United States is already far down on the list of educational performance in all subjects, especially math. We are rapidly losing our ability to compete with the rest of the world in all areas of the S.T.E.M. skills. This dumbing-down of America will end us.

Apparently there are studies showing that even white and to a lesser extend Asian kids are getting worse in their school performance when they study next to black kids. The more black kids you have in a school, the worse everyone performs. You can even see that effect on a macroeconomic level. Apparently, according to the cold hard numbers, 1 million white people living in a homogeneously white country (like Island) will produce more patents than 1 million white people living in a "diverse" country. That effect is current and historical, meaning that the numbers of patents and other indicators of creativity and intellectual output (like for example how many books are published and how many Nobel Prize winners the sample group produces) have gone down in every formerly white country in proportion to how diverse it became over time. Those numbers prove that diversity is not just not a strength, but a serious detriment, at least to white populations. The old "There goes the neighborhood."-trope is actually statistically proven right. The more black and brown people live near a white population, the worse that white population is off.

I used to be a volunteer tutor at one of Pittsburgh’s public schools. I tutored middle school students in Spanish and algebra. I was struck by how smart the students were, especially the black students - who often had a decent understanding of the concepts despite never studying or paying attention in class. The instruction offered by the teachers there was just as good as what I received in the suburbs. The difference was, most kids in the city cared more about cracking jokes and acting tough than achieving anything in school. A select few students took school seriously. Most of the rest lacked anyone at home to hold them accountable.

Maybe all of this “not understanding math” stuff started after they changed the way they were teaching math and called it “new math”. Even my white son didn’t understand the “new math” but then suddenly understood math as soon as I taught him the Old Math way…he went on to get his Masters in Chemistry….so he certainly wasn’t stupid. After I taught him the Old Math way…his teacher told him “That’s not the way we taught you and I’m marking every problem wrong if you do it this way.” So he started doing the math in his head…the Old Math way….and wrote only the answer….she then only marked him half wrong. I…as a parent have never understood the “new math”….so maybe it’s the “new math” that’s causing black students difficulties and if they change it back to the Old Math way those students will stop having difficulties. Just a thought.

Always has been and always will be. I'm black. I don't have to know about black mathmeticians (whatever you call them) to understand math concepts. Math is objectively black and white. No in between. Either the answer is right or wrong. Why? Because in real-world applications, if the operation of things like cars, power tools, or engineering that are math-based is even a hair off, that could mean the difference between life or death.

It's the culture. I am from germany, and from here, it looks like, for a lot of black people, everything they see as "white" is considered uncool. So they hate things like orthography and math. Partially it's about how you teach it. If you can get someone excited about it. I helped people with languages, like ancient greece and latin, with math and physics. There was especially one student. She had an E, I helped, and 2 years later she finished the school with ancient greece as one of her main school subject. 15 out of 15 points. She said, I was the first person who really was able to explain the language, to give her access to it, and afterwards she didn't need teachers anymore. Same happened to others in physics and math. So it's a lot about the teacher, but also a lot about the student. If the student doesn't try, if the whole culture is anti-education, there isn't that much you can do. You allways have some people who really try, but they need coaching. Most of the time it's because they were ill, or something else happened, and they took a break from school, or didn't learn for a long period of time. Sometimes they have a bad teacher. That's ok. But if the same teacher has very good and very bad students, to distinguished groups, and the main difference is their cultural background, than that, the cultural background, is most likely the problem, and changing how you teach the students, could do more harm than good 🤷‍♂️

I looked up the name of the company they hired and found their "Equitable Math" training guide for teachers online in PDF. The first sentence said "we will be viewing math through the lens of critical race theory". So much for their denials. It went on to say that white supremacy permeates through every aspect of our society. That expecting children to give correct answers to math problems or to show their work are both examples of white supremacy. It said the teachers would learn to be anti-racist teachers. But the teachers had to "first ADMIT their bias" 🙄 I presume it only applies to White teachers. There was a list of books, suggested reading, which included the awful book "White Fragility" and another by the hateful Ibram X. Kendi. *Equitable Math* is just another way to teach children lies about white privilege and create racial division. White parents are allowing the school system to gaslight their children into self-loathing and shame. It has to stop. The end result of this will be active discrimination, hatred and persecution of white people, which is already happening.
