@@LittleRainGames Sure, ray tracing sounds cool, though we have yet to see it in action. Plus it won't be authentic RT, but a hybrid of sorts. Anyway, this generation of cards is nothing but a pilot series that will be used to improve and further develop the technology for later generations, and therefore won't be as crazy as it sounds. Expect lots of poor optimization and bugs in the upcoming year.

This situation of a powerful, fast new card with a feature set that wasn't used anywhere outside of benchmarks felt familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I saw a comment on TechReport; this is the GeForce 3 all over again, over seventeen years ago. At that time the only thing that really supported pixel shaders was 3DMark 2001, and the "must have" game that would use the technology was going to be Doom 3. Which got pushed back to 2004, when a GeForce 4 or a Radeon 9700 Pro stomped all over the GeForce 3's performance. The preliminary number's I've seen with ray-tracing turned on (over at Ars Technica) at 4k or 1080p upsampled to 4k are still below 60 fps even in carefully structured demos like the Star Wars elevator one. Ray tracing could dramatically revolutionize how we render games once developers and hardware manufacturers get everything coordinated. I just don't know if the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti are the cards one should buy if they plan on keeping this hardware for four years or so.

I personally don't think people should buy into this generation of Nvidia cards, the RTX technology seems like a pipe dream at this point considering, like you said, the 2080ti (which is $1,200) has been shown to struggle keeping 60FPS with the feature turned on. The RTX series of cards definitely don't seem for gamers, no matter how hard they try to market it that way. They offer a boast to performance over the 10 series, but one that's negligible if you already own a 10 series card. I don't see the benefits of me upgrading my 1070 to a 2070 when I have no issue running any game at max settings, GTAV has been the only game thus far I had to tune some things down for but that's due to my cheap CPU (i5 6400T... i know). You also have to consider the huge impact console gaming has on the industry as a whole, not many companies are going to waste resources making an RTX enable version of a game that's going to sell more copies on an RTX-less machine, the games we see being made now are probably done on a direct request from Nvidia to demonstrate the new tech rather than the developers doing it out of their own charity.

You were right. 2nd gen RTX seems much better with Ampere. Massive performance gains, basically no performance loss from RT via DLSS, RT now on consoles so basically every AAA is gonna use it and those sweet sweet performance gains in Blender using Optix.

As a business student- It's not just a genuine monopoly, it's a textbook example as to why monopolies are so very destructive to consumers. I've written 2-3 reports on the way that Nvidia are intentionally strangling AMD's ability to compete and I am frankly disappointed the US has not done anything to my knowledge, even though monopolies have been made outright illegal since 1890 through the 'Sherman Antitrust Act'. It's simply a disgusting example of how the tech industry is a cesspool of greed, with many illegal practices that we know about, let alone the others that we don't.

After watching the keynote I decided to stick with my regular gtx1080 since they never went over wattage or performance gain over the 10 series for traditional gaming. Then it will take years before a decent size game library will support ray tracing then most users will turn it off to gain more FPS. I'll wait for the 3000 series.

But it’s not the “meet the previous generation Ti card”. Each version should be better than the one in the previous generation (2080 better than 1080, 2080Ti better than 1080Ti etc.) which it is. But the whole RTX series is shifted up one since titans are no longer gaming cards. The 2080Ti should fill the Titan hole (which it certainly does in price) and the 2080 should therefore be better than the 1080Ti but it isn’t. And it costs more. You’re paying $200 more for a card that performs the same, and even worse in some situations than it’s predecessor. The only difference is ray tracing that doesn’t exist yet. Neat. Good idea.

As Linus said it's obviously rushed. No doubt that performance will get better with better developed drivers and actual games with RTX to test on, though that might be 6 months or even longer from now, but when the 10 series was released the 1080Ti performed only slightly better than an oc 980 ti, it's been common for years that buying a newly released generation of graphics cards come with an understanding that it's more like an investment than instant gratification, it takes time to get things right so to speak, so you pay extra for the benefits of an oc 1080ti that will eventually outperform it.

not really.. kepler-maxwell you got the performance of the 600$ 780ti for around 400 with a 970.. maxwell-pascal you got the performance of a i don't know what it launched at 980 ti with a 1070 that was also i guess around 400... i mean that was really good.. but now you get the 1080ti performance with a 2080 for basically the same price.. this is shit.. even more when you look at the key selling points that are not even available.. we don't have anything yet that makes even use of rt and tensor cores.. and those tensor cores are really really powerful and i'm more hyped on having those on consumer grade cards than all the ray tracing hype because i know what they are capable of and what COULD be done with them.. it's just not there yet.. i'll wait 1-2 gens before i even consider jumping on this train and keep my 1080 ti..

William Eldridge PhysX is included but in terms of the PhysX engine there isn't any real advancement. Nvidia promised years ago to develop a strong PhysX platform that would support the collapse of entire buildings in real time, even with multiplayer.

William Eldridge GPU-accelerated PhysX is uses in only a handful of major games. And it's pretty trivial to use a low-end nVidia card just for that with an AMD card for rendering, so it's not really a selling point.

@@spider0804 not really. The 1080 ti pumps out 100+ on 4K on many titles. The 980 ti kinda lacked thereoff to hit the eyecandy standards. Now that the 1080 ti is plenty powerful, the 2080 ti naturally seems less impressive. But 20 series set a really good direction I would say.

I doubt CP77 will have RTX. Maybe via a patch, but that means they will have to make sure their playspace will work with it. Every game's playspace was specifically designed with Global Illumination in mind, RTX changes that. Build the playspace, drop in the light source and move on.

When you playing in snow map, this is really really bad performance when RTX very high, or ultra. I only got 40-50 fps for new product Intel or Nvidia GPU. RTX off or on no much better like in demo only water effect, I want see what happens in Metro Exodus when RTX on. In the architecture industry they spend long times preplanning scenes and walkthroughs of building renderings. In the film industry we have massive off site or on site centers that handle the insane rendering. But the thing is both those and similar scenarios are all planned scenes, not gaming ones where you have to render what the user might be doing. We have the tech in the professional sector that will already do this stuff quickly.

Yup. LTT can be sloppy at times, but they have good intentions and do the entertainment aspect really well. That goes a long way. Sources that aren't transparent and capable of independent critical though are useless. I'd recommend Gamers Nexus as a supplemental source. They tend to go much deeper into the nitty gritty with less entertainment, but they also have a very low threshold for BS and they aren't afraid to voice their opinions. They also put up their own 2080 review just now (and it's a good example of what I just mentioned).

I don't think Linus said it wasn't worth the money. Compared to the 10 series--*if you want the highest quality of frame rates at 4k ultra possible*--the 20 series is a no brainer. Does that mean its not "worth" it? Well, that depends on what you care about, how much you value your money, ect. What Linus said is that this thing is not released as advertised (something that does seem to be ubiquitous among pc gaming). Simply put, no one can actually try ray tracing. The problem here is that what they're trying to sell this thing as is ray tracing. Its absolutely absurd that Nvidia is going on about how ray tracing is "the holy grail" of gaming or whatever, and then no one can actually review this important feature (and the same thing goes for the new aa method as well). If Nvidia simply marketed this card as a significant improvement over the 10 series, and then also said that ray tracing and deep learning super sampling will be coming, but not included at launch, then it would be hard to criticize them on that. Maybe we could say "why release it if you have features that aren't ready?" But at least there wouldn't be this appearance of subversive marketing that the current RTX launch is surrounded in. Honestly, my take is that I think Nvidia is deliberately trying to piss people off. The more people that are pissed off, the more people get polarized, divided, and the more media exposure they get. I don't think they're stupid, I don't think they're evil and trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I think they just know how to troll, and they also know that trolling brings attention and therefore cash.

That's why I always come back to Linus Tech Tips over the rest. Kudos to you Linus! For those of us who use a 1080 ti, it would appear that instead of buying one of these over-hyped overpriced RTX cards, buying another 1080 ti and going with SLI would be the better and CHEAPER thing to do to get a meaty increase in gaming performance.

1070 here, I'm getting a steady 60FPS on max for every game I currently play. Can't say I feel any desire to upgrade right now. It's not like the "Game locked at 60FPS" craze is going away any time soon and since I can already reach that easily, why would I bother paying for more right now?

@@OnlyTidus 1080ti is still a beast, but if you absolutely must have the fastest, then yeah, 2080ti is epic. For me, personally, it's not that bad in price either, I built my gaming rig in January while prices were crazy high die to mining, the 2080ti is only £100 more than plaid for a 1080ti. But if you were lucky enough to land a 1080ti for £5-600, Then the cost of a 2080ti is a bitter pill to swallow.
