Yup. I think something like this could be greatly beneficial for the martial arts communities as a whole, not for that they're gonna solve self defence, but to show that working together from different backgrounds (a bit like mma..?) is the key to start improving this aspect of martial arts, which seems to be a very underdeveloped aspect of them.

Fun school! There are a lot more schools out there that work similarly than a lot of people realize. They just tend to be fairly small because not that many people want to train that way. Being able to use the environment effectively is a huge advantage. Great video!

Could you please list such similar schools that work similarly? I'd be very grateful (I'm sure many other people too!). Because they are fairly small as you've said, it is not easy to find informations about such places as some common MMA or Krav Maga schools.

I used to train historical fencing with a group of guys who were also doing fencing shows in theaters. And apparently a thing that used to happen was that in a big fight scene, some dudes "died" and they were lying on the floor, so were their swords. So it was kinda important to learn how to move around, do your thing and not step on them or their swords. To train that, our master threw bunch of swords on the ground, showed us where they are and then had us walk through them blindfolded. This seems dumb and irrelevant to self-defense in any way. Except, I then sparred with a friend outdoor, for shit and giggles (I did some other martial arts as well) and I realised I remember where all the things are :D. He started aggresively pushing me and I was like: "yep, I do know there is a sign post 90 cm behind me brother" and dodged his last attack diagonally so he ran into the post instead of me. These are little things that they won't teach you in your martial arts school, but give you small edge in the real world.

I worked as a barman in my student days for a few years and thanks for sharing this. I've seen dozens of fights and none of them look like martial arts or even combat sports. Possibly boxing maybe but that's it. All the Dim Mak and "90% of fights will go to ground ma friend so you better be a shark on the land and not a weasel in the water" BS marketing quickly evaporates in real world conflicts.

Bro that school looks dope!! It is interesting how most people go about martial arts or self defense talking about techniques. In my current martial arts gym, the instructor tells us not to worry too much about the technique since we will never be able to pull it off in a real situation 😂😂😂😂 Instead he tells us to focus on physical conditioning and understanding where gaps are open.

well said rokas i totally agree with you there when you talk about how being good at a martial art doesn't mean it will translate to a real world life or death situation... every art can only go so far... im reminded of a quote from the commander in the movie enders game " you're never ready, you go when you're ready enough " You're a good man rokas, i am so sorry for writing you off so early... yea it irks me when i see aikijutsu fall under such heavy scrutiny but it must be done its not necessarily the scrutiny that irks me its the way in which it is scrutinized in an immature condescending manner that infuriates me but i am reminded of a quote " anger blinds, a cool head wins the day"... my uncle johnny told me long ago that what he would do after the dojo would be getting together with his people, ( im guessing fellow aikidoka but i can't say for sure ) and looking at everything and figuring out what worked and what didn't in regards to aikido... but yea there are no guarantees, none of us are invulnerable, we just do the best we can to be able to defend ourselves and our loved ones.

Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, avoiding people places and situations that potentially lead to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving potentially violent self-defense encounters. Speaking based on my personal experience as a self-defense practitioner.

This looks like an amazing school! Thanks for sharing! Too bad I live too far away from it. Love your channel by the way. I've been an aikido practitioner too and have faced many of the same challenges that you've talked about. Later on I started training kickboxing and thaiboxing and tested BJJ too. I'm really interested in diversifying my martial art skills. Unfortunately I'm suffering from a joint condition that heals quite slowly. But I hope I'll be able to continue my own martial arts journey. In the meantime you are a huge inspiration, man. Keep up the great work! 👊

I trained in close quarter combat for about 4 years starting at 20 years old. It was a lot of scenario training just like Jeff is doing. Standing, knee high and ground techniques and weapons were all used and the use of improvised weapons and use of environment is a must. I miss those days. His use of different environments and the justification behind it is very smart. It would be awesome to see you guys down under but with the way the world is probably best to stay close to home.

That self defense school seems a great place to visit AFTER you have trained and mastered the basics in a traditional dojo. Unless someone is looking for a very specific short training in a very specific situation (like medical personnel in hospital setting), I don't think a novice would really learn anything of value going all out without the basics. In my humble opinion. But for martial artists of some level already, the place looks fantastic to try different scenarios.

I had a self defense book written by Bruce Lee. It was full of drawings of people in casual regular situations, like eating at a restaurant, and how you could use, for instance, the menu to help defend yourself, by blinding the opponent. Bruce would insist on always being aware of your environment to anticipate such attacks. It's weird, like being a hunted spy. But he would have loved that video.

100% true and accurate. After 35 years training in multiple combat arts, Muay thai, BJJ, Kyokushin, Boxing, wrestling, etc. Pressure Training/Testing is the ONLY way to really know what you'll do and how you'll react in a "REAL" event or incident. I've personally witnessed Black Belts get knocked out on the sidewalk from a person who had No training or very little Boxing at the YMCA. I've also witnessed experience MMA fighters frozen in their tracks or run like Flash during an altercation. No one really knows how they will react when it's Real Life or Death, and or how effective their skills are when shi.. hits the fan.
