Theperumanallur, a peaceful and mysterious temple nestled in the rural districts of Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Legend has it that this temple holds a profound secret. It is said that only those in their final incarnation, destined to have no rebirth, can enter its sacred grounds. Even the great sage Agastya was once denied access as he still had unfinished responsibilities to fulfill in another life.
Located just 7 kilometers away from Kumbakonam, Theperumaanallur is home to the divine presiding deity Vishwanathar, accompanied by his consort Devi known as Vedanayaki-the one who chants vedas for the universal benefit.
Every day, the sun god Surya offers his prayers to the Shiv ling, casting his rays directly upon the lord. And the Ganapathy, in this temple is depicted with eyes that resemble those of a human, while his nails and veins appear remarkably human-like as well.
Another intriguing aspect of Theperumaanallur is its belief of surviving the Maha Pralaya, the great cosmic deluge that wiped out everything in its path. Despite the cataclysmic event, this temple stood undisturbed, as if protected by unseen forces.
Now, let's delve into the captivating legend associated with this temple. Sage Agastya, having heard of the temple's divine glory, eagerly sought to visit Theperumaanallur. However, Lord Shiva, aware of his one pending life, instructed Magarantha Muni to obstruct his path. Following the Lord's command, Magarantha Muni transformed into a dense forest of magarantha flowers, effectively blocking Agastya's way.
Agastya through his profound wisdom and divine austerity, soon realized that Magarantha Muni was behind this illusion. He implored the Muni to clear the path, but the stubborn Muni refused. Growing impatient, Agastya eventually cursed Magarantha, transforming his face like that of a creature known as Yaali (similar to lion).
n a twist of fate, Agastya, after understanding about Lord shiva’s orders as narrated by Magarantha Muni, offered him an alternative solution. He declared that only the act of performing abhishekam (sacred bath) with a substance that had never been used before for any abhishekams would reverse the curse and restore Magarantha to his original form.
