I purchased a new LP Standard in 2019 based on all of the online hype that "Gibson is back". What a freaking lie that was. My brand new NOT B STOCK Les Paul had been factory polished so heavy handed that the finish had been buffed off of the back edge of the body down to bare wood and the nut was seated so poorly that it leaned back at an angle (meaning the scale length was technically longer than it should have been). NEVER again with these clowns.

I'm ready to sale mine, thought I would like this SG with vibrola, but without investing in locking tuners, these don't stay in tune, and the bridge on these, has to be almost down all the way,just to get the action right, and there is no way to go any lower, if the neck warps in the future, the guitar weighs too much also,the vibrola is uncomfortable and the pickups sound like the tone is rolled off, before you turn the tone down.

I don't get the whole faded/satin finish-thing, nor do I like it. An interesting point that is being made here without actually stating it, is that companies very often cannibalize their own product line with some of their offerings. I don't even want to get into the confusion this creates for the average consumer. Bring back the olden days when an SG was an SG, a Les Paul was a Les Paul and a Strat was a Strat. The only guitars that were close to adhering to that philosophy were those from the company's respective custom shops, but in recent years even those are "eating" each other.

I actually like these guitars, but I have a couple minor things... if the whole idea is a guitar that's "faded" and "satin" can we ditch the high gloss black plastic parts? I realize it would cost money and manpower to produce these, but imagine how much more cohesive this design would look if the pick guard, TRC, pickup rings, and back plate were matte black to match the rest of the finish. I wouldn't hate to see a satin nickel finish on the metal parts either. Maybe I'm alone in my thinking, but here I stand.
@concretephil11 ай бұрын
The mods you just described are almost exactly what the SG Faded was back in, I believe 2014. Exception being it was a large pick guard model and had the 490 pickup set (also had a rounder slightly thicker neck). Great guitar. I bought mine used in near mint condition for $400. Think they go used now for about $700 on the used market.

Gibson should consider an SG equivalent to the Les Paul Modern Lite in the $1400-$1500 range. As far as the trem system, I am all about bare-bones rockers, so this one and the $2500 version had very little appeal to me. It's definitely a niche market. But I love the SG, and anything they can do to brighten its appeal is appreciated Like the custom colors.

Gibson doesn’t need to do anything in the $1500 range now that they’ve tricked idiots into paying that much for their china epiphones. All they have to do is put Joe Bonamassa or Kirk Hammets name on them and throw some bs about gibson custom shop on the epiphone case and fanboys will gladly pay them 1500. Anybody who would buy a brand new poverty-spec base model gibson for 1500 is a moron anyway when you can get used Gibson Standard’s for that.

@WithCarePlz11 ай бұрын
@@TrashM0nk95 a 5lb SG? Good luck with that lol. Idk how that would happen. You’d have to have some super light wood, super light hardware. And i think you’d still be 6.5 lbs. unless you went with a super thin/small body. I think it might be possible but you’d have to shrink it, make it really thin, and you’d have to use super light like cheap tin hardware, and have 1 p90 or something, and maybe you could have it be 5lbs, but Idk. My SG is 7lbs 1oz and it’s by far my lightest guitar. If you want a 5lb SG I recommend you get a Korina Flying V. I had a used 2023 epiphone IBGCS korina flying V - that was just over 5lbs, and tbh it was sort of rowdier than an SG. It’s like brighter like it wants to scream and do the Albert king thing, almost like a strat and a LP had a baby. The only problem with those is that they are so thin that the neck breaks inside their hard cases. Mine came pre-cracked at the neck joint. I couldn’t tell if it was just the finish cracked or the wood. But if you figure out how to get a 5lb normal sized and still quality SG let me know cuz I love light guitars.

Thanks for the review! have a love /hate relationship with SGs because of the tuning issues. I want to love them because they look and sound so cool. The best SG I ever played was an inexpensive SG Tribute with satin finish. If memory serves it was one of the few that Ive ever played that had decent tuning stability too. 10 years ago I bought a new 2013 SG standard, wouldn't stay in tune no matter what I tried so I sold it. Tried again last year with a brand new SG Special, had Sweetwater set it up, Plex'd, etc. and after dealing with neck dive, forward lean, I've given up trying to gig it. It fights you the whole gig and that fight constantly pulls the strings out of tune on an already extremely sensitive guitar. I put small weights in the electronics cavity in an attempt to relieve the neck dive, I tried a wider strap, I tried the keychain lock from belt loop on my jeans to the guitar strap and in the end I wound with a now heavy guitar that was uncomfortable to play, still wouldn't stay in tune, and just way too much trouble. The problem is that strap peg needs to be on the top horn but thats a risky mod. All that said it is a good sounding and playing guitar when sitting down, recording, P-90s are good, etc. Otherwise, Angus Young not withstanding, I will not be buying another SG anytime soon. YMMV!

I don’t really like the ‘61 SG in general, and the faded costs way too much for what it is. I can’t understand the ‘61 SG in general. Instead of getting a ‘61 (I played 5) I ended up picking up a used Ebony 2017 SG Standard T w/ohsc for 1000. It weighs under 7lbs, it came with locking grovers from the factory, and mine has a piece of rosewood that’s so dark that it looks like ebony. Once I lowered the pickups down to about the plastic ring (a bit higher than that on high side) it sounds fantastic too. It feels super silky and premium, light as a feather, and it sounds phenomenal. I had planned on swapping out the pcb board- but once I adjusted the pickups it sounds phenomenal so why bother swapping the pcb. But for $1000. I struggle to understand why anyone would pay for a brand new ‘61 sg faded. Or a ‘61 sg standard for that matter. Oh well, to each their own. @@frankwebster9110 that does sound cool looking Faded black on the BFG series are cool looking That distressed black gives it a relic feel without the actually chipping and sanding of the finish I love LP specials and juniors Distressed off white might look cool with a black pick guard The one thing Gibson hasn’t changed unlike most other companies is the black headstock Matching color headstocks look terrible To me Jackson ruined an iconic guitar in the soloist by doing that

If you'd like an SG with the Vibrola, just get the Epi '61 with Vibrola. That's what I did, except since I don't care for the looks of the veneer that Epi puts on those, I went for one in Olive Green from zZounds. I got it for $490 after asking for a discount, which everyone should do. My Epi looks and sounds great, IMO, and stays in tune. The only mod that I plan on doing is installing a TonePros bridge with nylon saddles.

I got a 99 sg special. Cost: roughly a grand... why would I buy this?

I could buy an s2 prs for that money. And a stain is wayyyy cheaper. This should be 1500ish as is.

I have the 1,999 61 sg with the regular stop tail gloss much better then these for the price, it’s actually my favorite guitar. They should be coming up with new hardware, and diffrent designs to pretty up the guitars

Frank Marino used 8-9-12-15-26-38 gauge strings with an unwound D with the Gibson Vibrola and ive never seen him have tuning issues. He probably employs a luthiers knot at the tuning posts and greases his string slots. Ive seen him 3 times. Twice with Nugent and he had no tuning issues. Listen to his LIVE album from 1978 and the heavy tremolo dive bombs and judge for yourself.

These make the old SG Special Faded model with the uncovered HB pickups look such a bargain, as Trogly mentioned. They look a bit plain but do everything that a SG needs to do.
