The one thing that I wish they kept from the 2003 anime was during the train scene with the Elrics and Winry talking about Hughes, Ed looks out the window as they're passing a station and sees him waving. Like his spirit was saying goodbye and good luck. Ed was understandably confused but chocks it up to nothing.

While I generally prefer Brotherhood to the 2004 series, they made Hughes' death hit even HARDER because a) it comes at about the halfway point of the series so we've had a lot more time with Hughes B) the Elrics basically live with them for a couple of years while they're staying in central and C) it marks the point where the series goes from sometimes serious, sometimes silly to almost entirely serious. Brotherhood never strays from the Sometimes Serious, Sometimes Silly formula.

She had to be constrained. Hearing her sobbing and apologizing hurt. I didn't know the deceased, they were a friend of a friend's relative but seeing anyone in pain and confused is hard.

Nothing like waking up at 6am n cry again over the funeral 😢, also "its a terrible day for rain" has so much layers, 1 of course rain as in him crying, but also his alchemy is hindered in rain making him useless, so him saying its raining is him saying he feels useless with what happened to Hues

I'd just like to mention that Hughes was not weak by any means. There's a reason he has a pretty high position, he could have put up a pretty good fight against envy. But it was envy transforming into his wife that really caught him off guard, which is what killed him. Also it's really sad, because Hughes found out something so insanely important so early on in the series, and it made sense why he didn't speak over the millitary phone (didn't wanna risk the call being intercepted) and also why he didn't involve the receptionist, because he realized how dangerous what he found was, he didn't want to endanger anyone innocent, which is why he called mustang instead.

In short, Hughes was both too smart, and too kind for the world. He figured out what was going on *far* before anyone else and was targeted for it. Maes Hughes was easily the friendliest and most well-liked character in the series, simply put he is the most wholesome character in the series. The way he went out of his way to help the Elric brothers because of how he empathised that they are orphans and were in the military at such a young age. The way he is such a doting loving husband and father is just so wholesome. The way he was killed by Envy transforming into his wife and then shooting him is just too cruel.

I was ecstatic when I saw that Alicia started this show. We all knew that the Nina episode would break her, it breaks everybody. But *THIS* is what I've been waiting for. Ooooo drink up the trauma and misery. That's the good shit. Every time I go through this show I forget just how early some of this stuff happens, because it remains relevant throughout the entire series. It's a masterclass in storytelling. This show is, in my opinion, one of the best narratives in the medium. Beyond having incredibly well written and deep characters; there's no filler, every character has a purpose, and everything means something. I can't think of another show that goes on for this long and has such a consistent and singular story. It's so well thought-out. Hiromu Arakawa is incredible and she deserves the same respect as the other greats of manga/anime.

Is it weird that Nina didn't... break me? Unless there are multiple ways to break. Nina doesn't make me inconsolable. It makes me monotarget homicidal. I imagine that experience as a youth has influenced my reflexive reaction to atrocities towards children as well. Hughes's death hurts hard. It hurts really hard. And yet while it hurts... it doesn't provoke the visceral, righteous fury that Tucker did.
@zannimask
@zannimask 10 ай бұрын
Nah it's not weird. I think the meme of it also gets people more up-in-arms about it in retrospect than it did when first seeing the Nina scene. Besides, people react differently to different things in all kinds of ways. TLA (though not TLoK) is a big memory from my youth as well. I think my first anime was probably the original digimon though.@@zannimask IDK about the meme element of it... maybe that played a part of it, but even then it was so utterly WRONG and horrifying I was horrified. As someone older and appreciative of logic though, that revulsion has evolved into vitriolic hatred and loathing. I'm the kind of guy that can look at a totally repugnant character who did horrible things and see how they got there, and that often tempers my moral outrage. Shou Tucker only enflames it further for reasons I could write an essay on. As time passes and I understood more of the context of the situation, I only came to hate Shou Tucker more. I hate him in a way I have never hated a living human being in my entire life, and I pray I never find a person that makes me feel that way IRL.

The 2003 version of Hughes' funeral is something else... especially when you take into account that a) Elicia was voiced by an actual child, and b) the voice actors were told to not act as their characters, but as if they were actually there. That combination of factors just makes it all the more heartwrenching to watch in the English dub. Honestly, I don't know how Alicia would've handled reacting to that version.

I love you Alicia because you engage so fully and deeply with what's in front of you. I love seeing you experience this show because your tears are my tears, and I cry along with you as we share the pain given by this masterwork.

Hi Alecia can I recommend a great anime developed by Studio Trigger called Kill la Kill. It’s honestly one of my personal favorites and I think you’d get a good laugh out of it.

since you did ask, If you want a happy optimistic anime i recommend gurren lagann, it's the peak optimistic uplifting anime 10/10. also if you do watch it i recommend when you get to the ending, either watch movie ending with or in place of the anime's ending because basically the movie version (witch came out for the anniversary of the show) they added additional new scenes to the ending, witch in my option made it go from 10/10 to 12/10. like the anime version of the ending was already good the movie's version made it even better.

This is the thibg with FMAB, there are few shows that are this good at twisting the knife again and again and again when tragedy happens. I still start getting teary eyes at the funeral and then actually start crying at the "terrible day for rain" moment

And with that, you have made it through the first 15% of Fullmetal Alchemist: the show where every death hurts and the pain never goes away.

Welcome to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. This show delivers some of the funniest comedy and deepest tragedies I've ever seen in anime. Welcome to the club, we've all been where you are now. You've made it through the first ten episodes, now the real show can begin. When the original series caught up to the manga and diverged into an original story rather than wait, Brotherhood was conceived to tell the manga's story after the original ended. This was the divergence point. The first 30 episodes of the original series recapped in the first 10 here. From this point forward the recap is over and we're beginning the true story. This is one of the greatest anime out there, but it is absolutely a challenge to push through.

One small consolidation over FMA; At least Brotherhood speedruns a lot of the early trauma so we don't have to suffer as much 😢

This show is so cruel because it'll have someone experience the most tragic thing ever and then immediately change perspectives to other characters eating food and being silly to drive home how devastated they'll be once they find out

the death of Maes Hughes was one of my first ever experiences with sudden anime deaths out of nowhere. when i first watched FMAB, i didnt have the pattern recognition to see all the hints leading up to his death, and it hit me like a sucker punch to the balls. Hughes is genuinely a GOOD person, he stands for everything that is healthy and true in this universe, and he got knocked out of the story so so early. It's a Terrible Day for Rain

"It's a terrible day for rain" is one of the most quoted lines in this entire show. The combination of grief and helplessness contained in that line hits on emotions that anyone can empathize with.

I've always found the deaths of characters to not be as sad as the death of innocence. Whenever I watch this episode, I'm always able to feel just a little tension up through Hughes' death, but Elicia's bafflement at the funeral is what breaks me.

This anime is fun funny, thrilling, and heart breakingly sad at times but by the time the show comes to a conclusion it's one of the most satisfying endings I've ever watched in an anime. This episode hits harder now for me since I have my own daughter who's three, right through the heart on this one.

This anime does have some really sad times but a good anime,nay a great anime,makes you feel for the characters. So if your crying over the sad times,smiling over the good times,and cheering for the great times it is proof its a great anime. But yeah this is definately one you need a box of tissues for

I tear up every time and I've done it again 😭 Somehow the funeral always gets me even though I've seen it at least 10 times across FMA and FMAB. And it's always Elicia asking them not to bury her Father that never fails to do it. Well, we are past another of the major ordeals of the story now. At least the next ep is Rush Valley 😁
