One of the best quotes ive heard about Sokka is "He's stupid, but he's never stupid the same way twice." His character arc is frequently overlooked because there are so many spectacular arcs for everyone really, but that's the core theme, learning from your mistakes and growing.
@VoiceofGeekdom2 ай бұрын
I know what you mean, I feel Sokka is underrated at times, though that can happen quite easily with a show with *_this_* many great characters.

That’s a good question you asked about waterbending and how it affects the Water Tribes every day life and technology. Omashu has plenty of earthbenders and they use earthbending to guard the city and deliver mail. The only Water Tribe settlement we’ve seen is Sokka and Katara’s village. It’s surrounded by seas, snow, and ice, and we’ve seen Katara make use of all of those with her bending. But Katara is also the only waterbender in her area and she isn’t trained.

Way to late to comment this, but for anyone else too: the Fire nation in this world because of the element and the resources that one find in their home islands (coal and Iron, much like Britain in our world) were the ones to start the Industrial Revolution, the progress has been going on during the war, and the water tribes have been very depleated in the fighting, so have not had possibility to innovate like the earth kingdom has tried to, though they are also way behind the Fire nation. Also, water is literally everywhere on the poles, so wasn’t need for much steam engines

@RocketJr. Yeah, the typical, "Oh, why is this happening? This is new. They never talked about this. " No, they talked about that in this previous episode. They underestimate how much detail there is in this "kids cartoon." So they talk over it. Not saying you can't miss stuff, I still catch new things and make connections after all these rewatches.

Possibly controversial opinion: Sokka's story arc in this show is what Xander in BtVS could have been with better writing (not really intended as shade).

Sokka is ignorant in a lot of ways because of his small village upbringing, but if there's one thing I love about Sokka, it is his humility when proven wrong. He's eager to learn from his failures because he understands how much he lacks even if his ego protects him from those insecurities before being proven wrong.

26:06 American pronunciation is funny like that with ‘O’. In the first avatar live action movie they changed the pronunciation of Aang to a long ‘ah’ sound. And whenever you see memes about that, they spell it ‘Ong’ and I always double take because that is not how someone of my dialect would spell it 😆

"Do we have to destroy property?" I figure any insurance company would go bankrupt vey quickly in the Avatar universe. In episode 6 I just LOVE hearing George Takei's (aka Lt. Sulu) voice. "I'm the most powerful earthbender you'll ever see." Ahem....

One of the reasons why the other nations seem so advanced is because the southern water tribe has been under attack by the fire nation for the last 100 years. Their cities and towns were ravaged and destroyed and they haven’t been able to recover and rebuild. I won’t spoil it, but you’ll learn more about the water tribes and how the southern water tribe used to be towards the end of the season
@schreie2 ай бұрын
i don't know how much is explicitly said versus how much is just interpretation, but i also wanted to point out that air nomads were targeted for being next in the avatar lineup. water tribes were probably targeted as well for coming after the air nomads in the avatar rotation, but also that water is a naturally opposing force to fire, so it makes sense for the fire nation to directly target these groups.

19:20 Don't think too much about that since you haven't seen other cities of the waterbenders now. Imagine you start at the Kent Farm in Kansas and then go to Paris or even better Moscow 😄and say : the americans really are not much developed. Airbenders are of course another story since we don't know how they would have maybe evolved in 100 years.

Yes sokka being humiliated and learning his prejudice is wrong and being humble enough to change his behavior, in my view is the way u write good effective progressive social criticisms and politics into an episode. If the vast majority of people understood they were prejudiced and what they had learned was wrong, they wouldn’t be prejudiced. But most people have defense mechanisms to protect them from the shame and trauma of that realization. No one likes to see themselves as the baddie. You need to show people doing the hardest part. Learning and understanding that their prejudice is the problem and being humble enough to fix it. Saying - look prejudice, isn’t this bad? while useful, is the easy part. (At least if u show it in the extremely obvious form. Highlighting subtler forms of prejudice is harder.) We need more examples of characters who have their world view challenged and then realize they were wrong and adapt. This is a tame one, but a very appreciated one.

There is a theory that if Aang would've never vanished and lived till old (like not getting killed by the fire nation), then he might have died at the age of 98 when Katara would be born. And the theory says that Katara would have been the next Avatar (since the next Element in cycle would be water), it's said that it is the reason for her being a waterbender even though her parents are not
@sebastianwittmeier12742 ай бұрын
But then she would not have the soul of Katara, but the soul of Aang? Or do you say they are the same person living at the same time?
@nikolaykomissarenko78222 ай бұрын
There is also a theory that Yue was supposed to be the next Avatar, she was born around the time Katara was also, and people think the reason she was born in her state is because Aang was still alive. Which is the reason her parents had to plead with the spirits to save her.
