For the first 35 years of my life, I was an Atheist. Something happened and my perception changed. It happened fast. With what you have to say here, it got me thinking. Back in the day, we kept relics. Notice the word RELIC. What we create and leave behind becomes a Relic. Some may call it Legacy. People go through pains to look, feel, and appreciate such relics in museums. To ponder on what was going on through the artist's life, that s/he created that "Thing" (Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Architecture). Although I like the neatness of AI Art, something about hand created art just hits different. A time capsule of sorts. Computer generated art although beautiful and polished may not be valued because it can be mass produced. Like Art prints. Hand created art may end up becoming a status symbol in the future.

I don't think most "postmodernists" (save for those grossly misinterpreting the writers that you mentioned) would disagree that a tiger eating a person is a tiger eating a person. I think that the relativism discussed in Foucault and Derrida's works has to do with a skepticism around narratives, taxonomic systems, language, etc. - about how culture shades or obscures a material reality, as opposed to there being no material reality to begin with. Sure, you can argue that "all art is good" because notions of quality are subjective, but I think that postmodernism (outside of art schools, at least) is more concerned with why something is "good" within a certain context-not just that anything can, hypothetically, be good

What is objectively true and objectively good are two different questions. It's the is/ought problem. While it's objectively true that a tiger will kill someone it's also not objectively good or bad.
@StudioPractice16 ай бұрын
Hi… I agree that in this scenario the tiger killing someone is not objectively bad… but there are objective bads… (it’s clear to me you have an excellent grasp of the issues at hand, so maybe this is more of a simple disagreement - but THAT is my fundamental issue - the Pandora’s box opened upon “no objective bad”… yes there is.)

@lucasthurston6109 “If it is true that racism is an evil, then it is not just true for those who happen to be its victims. They are not just expressing how they feel; they are making a statement about the way things are. ‘Racism is an evil’ is not the same kind of proposition as ‘I always find the smell of fresh newsprint blissful.’ It is more like the statement ‘There is a tiger in the bathroom.’ One could imagine someone murmuring consolingly to the victims of racism that he understands just why they feel the way they do; that this feeling is of course entirely valid for them - indeed, that if he were in their shoes he would doubtless feel just thc same way; but that in fact he is not in their shoes, and so does not consider the situation to beracist at all. This individual is known as a relativist. He might conceivably be known, less politely, as a racist. Perhaps he might seek to pile on the consolation by adding that the situation at the moment may well be racist, but that in a few years’ time those on the sticky end of it will lookback and see that it was not racist at all. This is not just cold comfort; it is utterly incoherent.” From “After Theory”

Hey Elliott - I'm a little curious about your allergy to conceptualism - wouldn't more literacy about conceptualism show us more about the realities of the world we're living in? Amalia Ulman has a great piece called "Excellences & Perfections" which was a long term xploration of persona and "mass psychosis" on Instagram though she eventually points out the performance months later to see the reaction of the culture. Conceptualism can be used as a tool to bring you closer to having a real experience with the art and artist by pointing at the artwork and performance. Brecht felt the same way though he expressed it differently. I get it can be a little gimmicky at times but didn't you just create a conceptual piece the other day? Love the channel and what you do as an educator and artist.

Great stuff, I've been thinking a lot about the effects postmodernism has had on society, and it doesn't look good. Curious if anyone has thoughts another idea I've been toying with, the connection between social media and Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation. In short, it seems to me that social media has become a dominant form of interpersonal relationships, but in reality all these interactions are with simulacra, essentially representations of a person who does not exist, but is merely a performance on the social platform. I think that this coupled with postmodernism entering mainstream culture has created an insincere, deeply cynical and "disearnest" culture

I thought post-modernism was something that 'only' infected the arts and culture. To see it seep into everyday life and political discourse is a horrendous step too far for the west, but inevitable, I suppose, given that the idea of the individual and individual liberty has been elevated to where it has. And yet there was never a time in my 60 years on the planet where the individual had less actualfreedom. Which, I guess, is a very post modern contradiction. Only just found your channel but I'm very excited by the content and ideas I've seen so far. By the way, don't you just hate the term 'content'. It's an online version of the word 'widget'. A content provider is an online simulacra of widget manufacturer.

I disagree. It is way more grounded in reality to understand 1. we live in a very very complicated world 2. people are ignorant of much of the world they live in (In the US there is not a culture of caring or knowing ANYTHING about local elections, but people think the system is broken despite that painful pathetic ignorance) 3. people are not taught critical thinking skills to overcome the natural bias of our minds that struggle in meaningful ways in modern society (it is a skill to stop and recognize/consider the limitations of your POV) 4. the internet taken those issues and blown them UP UP UP with content that is so engaging thanks to its sensational emotionally triggering nature
