He spoke at the NHL awards giving a speech about mental health and how he was doing better. He has discussed how in Buffalo he was playing through addiction and how he needed help. At the same time though he complained about his experience in Buffalo to an extreme level when all the Jack stuff was going on. These are the doctors that worked with him, diagnosed him in the first place and got him started on the path that got him the opportunity to be on stage at the NHL awards to begin with. He is a classic case of a dude that gets help and when things are going well it is all about how well "I" am doing. The thing is in pro sports people are young. Even when they retire they are young in respect to the general population. You can say you are doing better at age 28, but not act like the work is done and you "beat" mental health. Lost on this story is the fact that, in the 2022 season, Lehner was more or less forced to play for the Knights during the playoff stretch when he was dealing with multiple injuries already. This led to him ultimately being hurt so bad he needed a DOUBLE HIP REPLACEMENT. For a goalie, that's a huge strain already mentally. Now imagine dealing with that and substance abuse/MI at the same time. All together, he's a victim of circumstance and the shitty culture of hockey and the Golden Knights. I hope he gets better.
@davedavid427Ай бұрын
It's "lost" because your memory is faulty. He didn't get in a playoff game that year; he was shut down in April. His backups Brossoit and Thompson played often: a combined 43 games, just one fewer than Lehner. Lastly, the Knights traded Fleury before that season to make Lehner their guy. Lehner was (in 2021-22) in year 3 of a 5 yr $25M deal. Were they not supposed to ride him? He's a butterfly style goalie, which is hard on the hips, and he didn't play an economical style like Fleury or Price. He flopped around, lunged, and prefered to "improvise" (his word). This surely contributed to his chronic injuries - arguably as much as anything in between his ears and off-ice issues. He's simply never been very smart about his conditioning, his playing style, and taking goalie coaches' advice. They've told him to play more conventionally because, duh, it's a convention because it works. But Lehner's a stubborn ass.
@billjohansson88Ай бұрын
@@davedavid427 My memory is like yours, although Lehner has always gone his own way. That Lehner already at an early age it could be shown that Lehner has an extreme raw talent and was trained very hard by his father. At the age of 17, he was considered to be "one of Sweden's greatest goaltending promises" for his cohort and according to Lehner's own statement, he would never have become a professional ice hockey player without his father's hard investment in him. This was "a bit" controversial at the time in Sweden and just proves the importance of "improvise" for his disability and his personality as a whole. The upside that Lehner had from his raw talent is an equally important minus in terms of his lack of technical soundness that Fleury had. Big difference between Lehner being good and that Lehner will end up as a star/superstar level like Fleury had e.g. In addition, Lehner has always had a tendency to have a large body, which is partly connected to his lifestyle and disability as a whole. That Lehner's body took a beating during his active years is no doubt. There is also no doubt that he could not learn to conserve his biological body as such a training method did not suit his personality of "all in" and "improvise" due to his disability and his personality. In my own professional life (health care), I have the privilege of meeting people with disabilities like Lehner. Always been very proud that Lehner and his family chose to try their own ways for his person-centredness. I'm just as sorry that Lehner realized late in his professional life the importance of implementing and starting from the unique person's abilities, needs and conditions in all parts of the health care process. *When I say "realized to" late, I don't mean that Lehner doesn't know his body and personality strengths and weaknesses best himself. But it is about the process of acceptance for being received as adequate, valid, or suitable in the present. Which is reflected by natural explanations that Lehner has two different personality sides. Where a darker side is found in debt, allegations, substance abuse and personal bankruptcy. And the other shows the humane side of Lehner being a mature face for mental illness as a good and in shorter moments sometimes a great hockey athlete in pro sports.
@karlshuler1011Ай бұрын
You can't force a player to play. He also, with the medical team, has a say. Most players in the playoffs are playing hurt. It sucks, but he still has to report. Price does every year. He can as well.
@karlshuler1011Ай бұрын
Price shows up every year, this guy can as well. He does have an obligation to do this. I can't work anymore because of having lung cancer, yet to get paid my benefits I have to go to doctors appointments and do everything my benefits want me to do. I don't get 5 million a year. He can at least show up for his medicals and the 1st day of camp. If he doesn't that 5 million should go against the cap. I would like to see him get his life back. Damn... And imagine if the the golden knights didn't fully commit to Lehner but they literally traded the defending Vezina winner, Marc Andre Fleury as a salary dump of all things! To help keep Lehner on the roster? Could Vegas have won more than 1 cup?
@nickstellavato409Ай бұрын
As a Knights fan, I genuinely don't think the Knights had a better chance at a cup with Fleury after the first season. Fleury was getting old on a bad contract. It really sucked to see him go, but seeing his season performances after the trade makes the cap dump look pretty decent on paper. The only bad part about the trade was how it was dealt with on the PR side of things. Really wish it was handled better

@@nickstellavato409I truthfully,believe,the NHL,made things a lot easier to be a contender,why,a bad team in Vegas,with so,so,so,much more to do,would be a eye sore for the NHL!I could never root for them,I believe they were hande the keys to the castle!Thats is my opinion,and as a matter of fact,a lot of fans feel the same way!Lerner,to me busted his own britches!

I remember Robin Lehner in Ottawa and I thought he was the answer along with Craig Anderson.

Hockey players need to stop with all the “white boy party” behavior. Pills and alcohol haven’t been cool since like 1993. All sports have a partying scene but hockey players go extra for no reason

Yeah, all those hockey players and their gun and drug charges... rolling up to tha clubs 59 deep.. shooting up strip clubs and such., making it tain and wearing that bling..😂 Oh wait thats basketball and football players....

Oh yeah.. having kids with like 10 different women across the country, 200 million dollar lawsuits for getting grabby are worse with massage therapists, hanging out with gang bangers and flashing gang signs during games... Was that "whiteboy party" hockey player? Why no, basketball and football players again I'm afraid...

@@Mahinskerrr lol, you said hockey players go extra...specifically "white boys" When there is no competition when it comes to wild, and or criminal behavior... NBA and NFL are the all time GOATS...
