I still think it’s really weird that Miyazaki saw a zombie rolling on the ground and immediately thought of his disabled friend.
@psyc84010 ай бұрын
Miyazaki spent decades studying human movement. I’m guessing that his mindset is “we take our ease of movement for granted, so it’s only fair that we put effort into depicting that movement accurately in animation.” So he sees the act of throwing a bunch of code into a computer to produce a struggling body and calling it good as an insult to the people who have these problems. I don’t know when this was filmed, but I think the closest example to this cgi in his work is the pig monster from Princess Mononoke (which used elements of cgi, he’s not a hand-drawn purist).
@JoseRS118610 ай бұрын
Miyazaki knows what people in pain look like. The point is that it looks like nothing, it has not emotion or experience behind it and they pitched to him that chaotic mess was something when it was just a digital inkblot test at best. Edit: Not Stan Lee 😅

As a disabled person, I appreciate that he called it out. Disabled people are often used as the basis for "horror" in a lot of ways, from facial differences being labelled disfigurements and used as a source of horror in designs to movement disabilities being used to evoke horror as well. It's a huge problem and the outcome is that people often associate "horror tropes" with real conditions that real people have, and that unfortunately makes a lot of people treat us worse, whether they realise they're doing it or not. So I think Miyazaki understood this well, and got defensive out of a sense of respect for his disabled friend, who was disabled and moved in a way that many people ignorantly paint as "scary". But that's just my own opinion. Horror is often ableist, and I appreciate that someone in such a high position was willing to be suspicious of the potential ableism in depicting movement in a way that could potentially fall into the "disability as horror" trope, which hurts real people.
