❤ Subscribe and share with others via whatsapp & facebook Hi, the NSE website has made some UI changes around 15.11.2022 .. The new process for extracting TRI values is: 1. Go to this URL: www.niftyindices.com/reports/historical-data 2. In the top drop-down (orange color), select "Total Returns Index Value" 3. Select Equity from next drop-down 4. Then the index you want data on 5. Then the dates 6. Click Submit The most commonly asked question of this video is with re: to having a real-time chart. I couldn't find a real-time one but have compiled the monthly chart in a Google Sheet whose link is available in the video's description. The sheet has been updated until 31.10.2022 & I'll continue updating it every month Having said this, I am certain someone with tech knowledge can figure out a way of doing daily values i.e. extract data from the NSE India webpage & populate it on a spreadsheet. But if you can't, please don't bother because the chart's utility is in identifying a medium-term trend and not for daily buys & sells. Good investing is good approximations.

Welcome Back Shankar Gee & All the very best for new channel. As always video content is top class.. one question as small cap 250 widely spread index (considering MF investment ) better consideration should be small cap 50 for the calculation purpose?
@shankarnath2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Sam B. Much appreciated. You raise a good point on Small cap 250 and Small cap 50. I haven't come across any study that puts a higher or lower weight based on the number of constituents. Ergo, I went with 250 as it's what constitutes small cap within the Nifty 500. If you've come across any material on, which index would be a better consideration or the impact of number of constituents in an index, then pls do share. I am keen in knowing more on this because we have too many indices like Nifty 50, Nifty 100, Nifty Midcap 100, Midcap 50, Smallcap 50, Smallcap 100, Smallcap 250 etc. dotting the landscape

Hi SN, I rewatched this video after a long time as it initially seemed brilliant. However, I have two questions regarding this: 1. Why choose the smallcap index? Why not midcap or microcap index? 2. Like every other point-to-point comparison, the whole thing depends on the starting point, where you assign a relative valuation of 1 on Jan 2007. The returns would vary wildly if you fix a relative valuation of 1 to Dec 2017 (a point corresponding to 1.32 in your worksheet) or July 2013 (a point corresponding to 0.65 in your worksheet). So, how did you come up with this date?
@shankarnath8 ай бұрын
1. No particular reason 2. 01.01.2007 was the oldest calendar starting date available to me. The Nifty Small Cap 250 index starts from 01.04.2006. I wanted to do yearly comparisons so I started from 1st Jan 2007

You mentioned a "trigger" of 1.1 or 0.9, but can you truly program an account to act in an automated way to alert you when those range boundaries are breached, or is that 100% manual and you have to check every day? If the latter, it seems like it would be a bit difficult to always notice at first. If there are tools that can assist though, can you mention what those would be? For example, with Fidelity, Vanguard, or some other global broker.

@@shankarnath Thank you Shankar for replying instantly! why did nifty small cap tri in the numerator and nifty 50 in the denominator? Just curious, What happens another way around.
@shankarnath2 жыл бұрын
If you reverse the numerator and denominator then everything reverses. 0.9 then will mean a relative undervaluation of small cap (or over for large caps) and vice versa. The final objective doesn't change though, it's just like the last day of a test match series .. sometimes the TV would say India needs 50 runs to win or it'll say Australia needs 5 wickets to win.
@mk67890 Жыл бұрын
Brilliant analysis. However, I have a small doubt. Why did you use total return index instead of historical index
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I prefer using TRI as it is the true reflection of shareholder return i.e. capital appreciation plus dividends. Ofcourse, the same analysis when done using only PRI values would somewhat give a similar trend so even that can be explored

Dear Shankar, Mutual fund market became so clumsy with many types of funds, and there is a lot of ambiguity in the available knowledge around social platforms from finfluencers. Like, as 1) Avoid small-cap and multi-cap funds, 2) Go with Flexi, Large Cap and Index funds 3) Avoid funds with high tracking error and so on. I understand that no single model suits all retail investors but there could be a common way to some extent. If you get some time please make a detailed and pragmatic video on how to choose the best mutual funds from a retail investment point of view. Thanks a lot in advance. 🙏

Hi Nilkamal, thanks! I didn't use average reading. If I recall correctly, I either used the 1st day or the last day of the month when compiling the data. Shankarji, Excellent content and some wonderful strategies for investment. I wanted to check whether the relative valuation should be calculated against Jan 2007 as per your spreadsheet or should it be calculated against the start date of investment. ie in the formula (C5/$C$2)/(B5/$B$2)...$C$2 and $B$2 - Does it matter which month/year the baseline is set to?
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. The baseline month/year does matter but the effect of that is somewhat diluted over the longer term. I used Jan-2007 because this is as far as the data went (the smallcap 150 values are available from 01.04.2006 only). It also helped that Jan 2007 was smack in the middle of the 2004-2007 bull run which reduces lop-sided results. So it was a bit logical and I didn't have a scientific basis for date selection

Is it a vice method to invest in a smallcap fund via sip for a long term or should a person go for other categories like midcap funds?

Thanks for starting your videos series again. Your earlier videos were of great benefit to me. Now that you are out of ET Money, would appreciate your honest opinion on ET Money genius subscription😁.

Thank you very much for your continued patronage. ET Money Genius is designed for long-term investors and my own portfolio has not even crossed a year. My opinions on performance, volatility, downside protection etc. (versus benchmark & expectations) will take a couple more years to develop. Let's circle back then

Thank you so much for such an informative video. Can you please share where to see this "performance of small cap by large cap" chart live....that will be of great help thank you..
@shankarnath2 жыл бұрын
Hello Subrahmanya, thank you for your kind appreciation. I couldn't find the real time chart anywhere. So I compiled it in an excel sheet (link is in video's description) using the methodology I have explained in the video. But I'm sure there is a tech play for this. While I don't know how, someone can extract data from the NSE India webpage & populate it on a spreadsheet. I spent a couple of hours on it but couldn't get it right. I did manage to learn some Google Finance formulae (which is handy) but not the way I wanted it for this video. Apologies!

Any tactical buy sell reco based on Small CAP index PE ratio?

This is awesome. Is this something ET Genius is doing behind the scenes? If yes, a 249 monthly charge seems inexpensive for a SIP of more than 20k.

Hello Faizan. It's all there in the worksheet (link in description) and I've also answered some specific questions in the comments. Can you pls go through the same and let me know if there are any unanswered queries. But the worksheet is quite explanatory
