@@Nick-wn1xw Peep alignment without a rubber tube (going back to the 90's here) is dependent on the twists in the string and the proper tuning of the bow. SOME times, the peep can slide up or down those twists which changes the alignment. If you tie the peep in, or "serve" it in top and bottom, you put pressure on the string above and below the peep which prevents that from happening therefore maintaining proper peep alignment.

Hi Lilly, I've been shooting since I was 5 years old and that was many moons ago. I enjoy shooting by instinct - no sights - no trigger. I have my reasons for that. Anyway, I have a bit of trivia: The bow you're holding has the removable limbs. The concept was the brainchild of Fred Bear. He want on a trip and had trouble with the length of longbow in traveling and eventually that gave birth to what you are holding today. Tip: while target shooting use an arm guard even if you don't need it to protect you arm .... it'll keep clothing from interfering with the string when shooting. Try holding your position/after arrow release; don't drop the bow right away. Also pay attention to forward creep of your draw hand from its anchor point ... sign of fatigue .... arrow may strike and group to the right of your known bullseye. Good luck. Thank for the video.

I tried recurve, got to be okay at 25 yards, but for deer hunting I wanted to be as accurate as possible, in order to be an ethical hunter, so I shoot a compound with the various devices she is demonstrating. As a sport and art, archery is better with a recurve, but to hit the kill zone at 30 or 40 yards, a compound is the way to go.

I was shocked at the increased in accuracy and from your video I now know that the same sight system and release will bring increased accuracy with my old recurve. Yes, this hybrid system I think could be very important to recurve archers. Thank you for doing this.

Your "D" loop for the release should be tied on either side of the nocking point with your arrow nocked under the nocking point , a trad bow is meant to be used barebow and be shot regularly to help muscle memory , if going to stuff around with all the technical crap bolted onto it you might as well buy a compound

Lilly it is not safe to have any loose strings or objects hanging from your bow. The tubing from your peep should stretch enough for your draw length. You are missing a piece that glues onto your riser and the rubber tubing slides onto that piece. Please research it ..

I'm honestly not sure why not just use a compound bow instead? If it's accuracy someone wants then using compound tools with a recurve bow seems counterintuitive. Also, recurve bows don't have a left-off so using a compound release is not perfect since it simply might not hold the full weight of the draw at some point in the future risiking an unwanted shot or worse. 40 lbs for a recurve is like 10 for compound in full draw and that's the weight the release is usually holding.

Lilly I love your videos. And you were the first person that got me interested in shooting a bow. That was 4 or 5 years ago, took sometime but I got my first bow 3 weeks ago. I haven’t received the sighting system yet but I been shooting 3 to 1 days to rest. I also use a wrist release! Some of the new mi-nute things I picked up is when you pull back. Pull with just the wrist and allow the three trailing fingers to just relax. Then lightly rest your trigger finger on the release and pull through when your ready. By relaxing the 3 smaller figure it helps the release start in proper alignment. Thank you again! Still waiting on local archery shop to get in a left handed recurve till then the compound is tremendously therapeutic

You have a quick release, a sight, a kisser button, and now a peep sight. If you want accuracy, you should just get a compound bow. Having all of that equipment on your recurve, it takes the traditionalness (if that is even a word) out of the recurve.

Lily, there should be another small piece in the package that looks like the little stud on the back of the peep that glues on the riser to slip the rubber tube on. Since the peep is generally used on compounds , you might need to buy some longer tubing so you don't stretch it too much and change the torque on your bowstring. As you mentioned, anchor point is critical. Good luck and have fun!!

Relax your grip on the release for better accuracy. I use the cobra wrist release because your arm does the draw and only one finger is used for trigger. Also you could try a different peep, the one I use is just a small circular with grooves on outside edge, no worries about peep twisting. Only drawback to this is that you will be replacing arrows because of hitting them with other arrows.

It is incredible how you installed this yourself. And in such horrible weather. I would think locating the peep on the bow string is best done by a helper. The archer draws the string and hold, the helper put a mark on the string where the eye is looking through. I would have titled the video slightly differently though. Peep hole and front sight certainly increase accuracy. It gives the archer an extra tool, for front-sight / rear-sight visual alignment. That said, I don't know if it "increases skill". My wife and I started several years ago with a 6-wk lesson package at a local indoor archery range. As beginners, we started with basic compound bows. School has recurves too, but coach said we can try that in later lessons when we've got the basics down (probably due to the higher draw weight while holding). All bows had NO sight. By end of lesson 1, I was so frustrated. Without any visual reference, my shots were going all over the place. When we went back the following week, I brought a triangular paper-clip with me. Some call it binder clips. Using Post-it notes to avoid scratching the bow, I put the binder clip on the bow and used it as my elevation reference. First 30min of class, all my shots landed within a 12" circle at 12 yards away. Coach moved my target out to 20 yards. My grouping dispersed - again landing randomly on the 36" diameter target. 10min later, I asked to change to a smaller paper target: looked like 20"x20", with a 18" diameter. --> Again, this brought my grouping to within 12" from bulls eye. That day, I learned "aim small to miss small". By lesson 5~6, I was routinely shooting a 8" grouping at 25 yards away... Using just a binder-clip for front sight (elevation only). Fast forward: years later, my son and I both got our own compound bows. Whisker biscuit, 3-pin front sight, peep sight, D-loop, etc., the whole 9 yards. Also got trigger release too. It took me only 3 visits to the local outdoor range to get bored with this setup. It became a game of: - Adjusting my pins until they're spot on. - Learn how to settle down & keep still for consistency (very easy for me, I've being practicing taichi for >20yrs) - Occasionally guess/adjust for wind based on feel. Too boring. Then the memory came back to me: In that first "archery school", when I was indulging in my own accomplishment by class 5 ~ 6... All the way down the other end of the range, where a regular/seasoned class was going on (not our beginner's group), there were students shooting a smaller grouping than me, at 5 yards further than me, with no sight on the bow at all. 100% instinctive shooting. I then spent the next few range sessions trying instinctive, ignoring all the sights on the compound bow. I got hooked. THAT, is a real challenge to archery skill. NOW, I finally get it, why that archery school had no sights on their bows. Earlier this week, I received my first traditional recurve bow. No shelf. No sight. No nock point. No D-loop. (Just strung it, with the string strands straight, for tension break-in.) I will be challenging myself to learn & master instinctive shooting. Both hands. Resting arrow on both sides of bow. (That's 2x2 = 4 combinations) My plan is to start with Mediterranean draw. But eventually I want to also get mastery using Mongolian thumb ring. I imagine this is going to be approx 1~2yr journey...

Okay a couple things, It appears you are missing a part with your peep sight, there should have been a piece that sticks to the bow limb for the rubber tube to push onto, so you wouldn't need the extra rope. watching you shoot from the side you can see that you are drifting on some of your shots. In other words your arrow is coming forward before you release and sometimes you are not drifting, this will affect your accuracy. Shooting with a release requires that you keep back pressure to keep from drifting. On your video watch yourself when shooting from the side you will see what I mean. Love your videos.

I just took notice that when you opened the peep sight package I thought I saw something fall to the ground, was wondering if that was the piece that sticks to the bow limb.

like what you do - just did same thing - took rest, release and peep from compbound - but to further increase accuracy I am working on adding a clicker to make sure draw length at letoff keeps steady - should allow precision and nice grouping even at 70 or 90 meters distance

A peep helps depending on how consistent your anchor point is. Shooting a sight and trigger release you still need to have good form- don't anticipate when the release will fire, maintain back tension, don't let the bow move when you release. Keep working on your form- anchor point, back tension, etc.

@killerapearchery2693

Lily, so the reason for the consistency issue is probably due to the characteristic of recurve bows being very sensitive to slight form errors. This is cause by the limbs being very flexible and susceptible to being flexed one way or the or the other during an imperfect alignment of the string during the drawing process. Longbow limbs are very stiff and will not twist when the string is torqued left or right. This makes longbows extremely forgiving. They will force the string back into alignment no matter how much you torque it. All you have to do is hold the bow steady on the target and the arrow will go where you point it. A pair of longbow limbs will probably be best for the type of accuracy you are looking for in a traditional bow. That’s why the bests archer and bow hunter of all time, Howard Hill swore by the longbow. The longbow is also used by trick archers who need a forgiving bow that’ll be accurate when doing some crazy stunts, like the great trick shot Byron Ferguson.

A bow string should not twist while being tensioned, so if you install the peep hole properly no string is needed to correct it.

Get a sling for your wrist and rest the bow in your palm without gripping too tight .... Your pull to the right is from gripping too hard on the bow and twisting it to the right ... the longer you shoot the more prominent it becomes...You can see it if you watch your videos really closely. The sling will help you keep control of the bow after the release so if it falls from your palm you don't drop it. After you get used to not gripping so tight you will need it less. It definitely helped me with my accuracy and consistency when shooting long sessions.

@@vaclavfliegel703 I like lots of odd stuff that might not be seen as optimal. But I DON'T try to pass it off as better. At most I say that it fills a specific need for me. Like if I wasn't allowed a compound for hunting, but I really liked wheelie bows. I like both kinds of bows, but they have their own lanes, and driving down the dotted line is not effective.

That's not a hybrid, that's a standard for recurve hunters here in Canada, but we clock our peep sights in the string so you don't need the rubber band/tube crap connected to the limb. I hunt both recurve and compound, I even have my late grandfather's crossbow that we got him for his 88th birthday after his shoulder surgery. Hunted with him till he passed at 98.

I think you should have gone with a modern compound. It will have a much shorter brace height and lighter to boot. Less vibration and easier to shoot and get accurate with. At the end of the day your recurve is almost as modern as a compound. I am partial to Hoyt. Give it a try, I think it may surprise you.
