He didn't have any plates so ammo was the only thing in his backpack it's also the only thing you autopick up

Your ammo doesn’t automatically go from your pack to your gun same way your plates don’t. You have to open your pack and equip the other items in your pack. Look from 6:45 on forward, he would reload and the ammo would deplete and immediately revert back to max. How would he have 5 slots of max ammo for both his AR and SMG ?? Stop it. The math ain’t mathing
