This is Bloodthief, a game developed by Blargis. Bloodthief is a mixture of Quake, Hotline Miami, and Ultrakill as said by the developer. It sees you running, dashing, slashing, and wall running through dungeons inspired by 1990s game design.

It absolutely makes sense. Movement shooters are fun because *movement* is fun. Who doesn't enjoy flying through the air? I feel like when graphics became capable of being more realistic, we had this intrinsic desire to make our games more realistic as well. And in the process we lost something.

You enjoying a game with an aesthetic before your time is just proof that a well designed game, regardless of the aesthetic is timeless.

Dev might want to take a look into how Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga hides their shader compilations. During the user’s first time running the game, it secretly runs the shader compilation process in the background, while the player is distracted by getting their user settings dialed in like difficulty/keybinds. This might feel a bit smoother as player vs a loading screen. Great video and if you like things about game dev/design, you should keep learning! Edit: Engine context.

I like watching devlogs. And Blargis is certainly a good at doing them. It is the first devlog where I made two of my friends watch all of them. I'm personally not really a gamer. I enjoy the community aspect of it and I like to watch let's plays, but I rarely play myself. So I won't download the game. But I appreciate you making the game more known. It really deserves it.

I like that you admit to not knowing too much about dev; so many youtubers talk quite authoratively about stuff that they don't seem to know much about I like that you're genuinely really into this; again, there's a lot of fake enthusiasm on YT. Great video

@@brahillms1374 That's not game design, anybody who happens to be limited on resources should do it. In fact, it is commendable to do it for extra speed regardless of whether you are limited or not. Game design is more about the story of the game, and also the mechanics like the blood bar and speed dashing.

This is not 199X game design, it just has a vaguely 199X aesthetic. also, describing it as a "FPS melee game" does not make sense, it is not an "FPS" (first-person shooter) if it doesn't involve shooting as the main mechanic.
@ImWelly
@ImWelly 2 күн бұрын
The developer described it as such. There is a crossbow you can acquire and shoot, so technically it is an FPS. I’d say given that the developer himself took inspiration from level design of the 90s, it definitely uses things that were popularized back then. I mean he literally described it himself, he has a video called “bringing back the genius level design of the 90s in my game”.
@elio7610
@elio7610 2 күн бұрын
@@ImWelly it may be the developer describing their own game that way but i still question it. i suppose it is probably more like a 199X game than most games but game design is naturally built on ideas from the past so taking some ideas from the past doesn't mean it is not still modern design.
