Squier is either a favorite or simply a brand we have in our minds to graduate up from. However, this Squier Paranormal Cabronita Telecaster Thinline is nothing to write off. This guitar is its own animal, and not a lower-end version of a Fender product. Outside of a manufacturing oversight, this Telecaster was absolutely worth every penny.
Please note: This video was not sponsored by Squier, ProAudioStar or any associated representative within. The 11th Fret purchased this guitar outright.

This guitar combines two of my favorite things, a tele and a p90. Have you ever taken a look at the Yamaha 611. Seymour hum in the bridge, SD p90 in the neck, grover locking tuners, wilkenson bridge, flame maple top (lam), maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, Tusq nut. It was 599 forever. Recently raised to 699. Still a steal!

Well, the fretwork on my Paranormal Offset Telecaster Squire was nearly perfect. Might be same. 22 frets - rare on a Squire. Smooth fret ends, low action. Jazzmaster pickups have always intrigued me. They have a lot of winds - 7.8 is a lot. But they also move the neck pickup back away from the neck (which makes it sound brighter), and they they often have 1 meg or 500k pots. The higher value pots let you keep more of the pickup 'sound' which is cool.
@11thFret

I’m drawn to Jazzmaster pickups too. I’ve already replaced the ceramic pickups this came with (because I’m never one to leave well-enough alone). I put 500k pots in as well, but hot damn they’re bright. I’m almost afraid of 1M pots in light of it. I’m trying to wiring in a switchable resistor to allow the full 500k to take hold, with a switch to dull it down to roughly 260k. But I’ve not been successful yet.

I bought a set of G&L Jazzmaster pups in white to replace the pups in my Thinline. Mine didn't say B stock but was "open box" and $10 more than what I see in the link above. Still a great deal. Bought it thinking I'd practice modding on this before I dove into my "better" guitars. Can't find a defect on mine. The tone knob was wobbly but a simple tightening of the nut and good to go. Couldn't see a value for the pots. Have you changed your yet? If so, what value is typical for this type of pup?
@11thFret
@11thFret Жыл бұрын
I changed my pups pretty much immediately after shooting this video. I put a couple of Tone Hatch Vintage Class 1962 Jazzmaster pickups in, and swapped the pots for Bourns 500k. They’re a bit bright because I chanced using 500k’s for single coils. But they work. The average resistance value I get on Jazzmaster pickups is usually between 6.5-8.5k. Mine was open box too, but absolutely perfect like yours. Not a single defect outside of some easily fixable wiring issues.

I had the same “open box” from the same vendor and it is for sure a brand new guitar. Even the tape on the box shows it was never opened. Loving mine. Like you, I have nice guitars like a new Kiesel and some great vintage Carvin, but bought this because I didn’t have a hollow. Love the neck as it’s very similar to a standard Kiesel/Carvin that I find very comfortable. I did swap the tuning keys with locking, but that’s about it. Plays way above it’s price point!
@11thFret
@11thFret Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was pretty floored with mine. I never discussed the box in the video (cutting room floor footage), but it was opened at some point. However, the Fender box it was in matched what was inside from model to serial number. The only defect was the pickup, which was an easy fix under this roof. But yeah, the neck on these is stellar. I love it. I've already modded the hell out of it, and hope to do a followup down the road. I actually didn't like the toggle being furthest back, so I moved it to the volume pot's old spot. The volume is now in the middle and the tone in the rear. My 18-year old self hates me for making that change. But now that I don't aggressively strum like Billie Joe Armstrong anymore, I actually appreciate an easy access toggle. I also rebuilt the harness completely, and installed Tone Hatch 1962 Vintage Class Jazzmaster pickups. In the coming days, I plan on installing a switchable 470K resistor to dull the sound, since I took a gamble on using 500K pots. With the switch engaged, it'll bring the pot values somewhat closer down to 250K. Off, it'll remain 500K. I also have a set of brushed aluminum covers to throw over the pickups. I'm pretty stoked about that. As for the tuning machines, I'm still happy with the stock ones. I'm somewhat partial to split shaft vintage style tuners these days, and mine hold tune quite well. I've still yet to play a Kiesel. That's something I'd love to get my hands on at some point. There's definitely a mystique to that brand for those who don't know. I'm very familiar with Carvin, and have played many. I never understood back when why they were never taken very seriously by a large number of players. Now, rebranded as Kiesel, they're one of the big breakthrough brands across the last decade. It's truly an amazing spectacle.

@@11thFret I did just sand the next yesterday on mine. Much better now. Play one county fair in 85 degree humid weather and you’ll never want a gloss poly neck again! If you liked Carvin, Kiesel is still the same insane quality, and their virtual builder lets you create exactly what you want, or call them and they will do things not in the builder. Kiesel was around since 1946 and Carvin was named after his sons Carson and Vincent, but Kiesel was always their last name.

Kris! Happy Holidays. New studio is lookin' great. Hey this Squier Cabronita sounds and looks really good. Were you using a noise gate in your chain? If not, did you find these pickups to be overly noisy? Not a problem, I have some single coil guitars and we find ways to deal/live with it. Also, and forgive me because I'm not too familiar with these, but isn't the Cabronita a longer scale "baritone" guitar? Oh well, glad to see you back up and running, looking forward to cool stuff in the New Year. Btw my latest find is an older Epi Les Paul 100 in cherry burst. Pawn shop find. It was a lefty that I've converted to righty with a scooped cutaway on the switch side of the upper bout, a new Graph Tech Tusq nut, and a custom curved armrest on the edge of the lower bout of the body that keeps my right arm off the controls. Didn't have to relocate the bridge posts, there was enough adjustment available as-is to intonate it for Ernie Ball 9-46 Hybrid Slinkys. I can send a pic if you're interested, it's one of a kind. You wouldn't believe how little I got it for, Merry Christmas to me! Take it easy man!
@11thFret
@11thFret Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! The studio is far from done, but is operational for the time being. I'm so cheap that I can't bring myself to pay for the set materials I want 'as new'. As for the Cabronita: Jazzmaster pickups are single coil, so they'll introduce some lovely 60-cycle hum, but these were none worse than any other single coil equipped guitar I own. I've actually been playing it through my Marshall JVM210H and it's just magic. I didn't use any noise gates on the signal chain, which 'I think' I made a point to mention that this time. If not, shame on me. Whoops. Squier did make a Paranormal Cabronita Baritone, which came with P90s. This one has Jazzmaster pickups, which are similar to P90s, but not quite the same. I almost bought one then before this channel was even a thought. But I already own 2 baritone Tele partscasters, both then and now. I didn't see the point in bringing in a third. Congrats on the LP100 find! I love pawn shop scores like that. Those LP100's are honestly some really awesome players. I used to have a Studio LT which was also amazing for the money. Did you pull an Ace Frehley on the 100 by cutting away at the upper horn? If you look up his 1973 Les Paul, you'll know what I'm talking about. And a very (belated) Merry Christmas to you and yours as well! I'm overwhelmed with content to shoot, so I'm going to hunker down and try to get something accomplished.
@markpell8979
@markpell8979 Жыл бұрын
@@11thFret Yeah on the LP100 I used handsaws, files and sandpaper to woodwork a ramped conical elliptical cutaway between the edge of the neck and the pickup selector (on the bottom side now) that gives pretty good third-finger access up to the 20th or 21st fret. It's a compromise but it works. Didn't cut the notch all the way through, the back of the guitar is untouched and from the front the overall LP shape is preserved. This also conserved the strength of the neck pocket. The armrest would remind you of the chinrest on a violin, it curves around the 7-9:00 o'clock position on the perimeter of the lower bout, making a curb so my arm doesn't disturb the control pots. I painted the cutaway and armrest to match the red margin of the burst. Polished the frets and dressed the ends, oiled the fretboard which is a very even, dark rosewood. The reversed Les Paul decal on the headstock, backwards-operating controls, and odd jack location are all just cool quirks that are no problem. The guitar plays great. Pickups are hot hot but they clean up nicely though. Has Alpha B500k pots with 22mF orange-drops, a nice surprise! While I had it apart for the woodworking I fully shielded all the cavities. Just did all this for fun, I got the guitar for $15 on an inventory clearance at the pawn shop. I'm old and retired so it's been a good project and I intend to keep it.

This guitar comes with two of the three mods I have always planned for my next Tele...P90's (at least in the neck...and I would choose TV Jones pups), control plate reversed (so the pup selector switch is in the back...since the plastic cap always goes missing and the switch becomes a dangerous, flesh slicing implement)... add a Bigsby and this guitar checks all the boxes! Love the blue color, but I would go black...in honor of Eddie Wilson!🤘

I modded the $#!+ out of mine already. Because its of lower value, I didn’t want to invest in pickups that would almost match the overall value of the guitar. So I threw in some Tone Hatch Vintage Class pickups, rewired and rearranged the controls, and added a phase reverse switch to the bridge pickup. I had brushed aluminum covers on after the mod, but found them to really mud down the sound. So I went back to plastic. I love the thing. It’s one of my best playing Tele’s.

I've been watching with bemusement as Squier Paranormal releases older Fender models that were originally the Player Series. I have the Fender version (made in China). Before Fender created the Classic Vibe label, they made Fender branded models in China that were the quality of Mexican, but lower priced. There was a Telecaster with 3 pickups, the thin line with P90s and I think a strat. They were soon discontinued and Fender renamed the guitars built in China to better spec as Classic Vibe.

Prejudice is a funny thing. I overlooked Thinlines for decades, only to discover in my 50th year of playing that they have a sound and feel that knocks me out. Sure enough, this one sounds a little better to me than a “real” Jazzmaster. I still prefer P90’s and regular Tele pickups, but this is useful information regardless.

How you doing buddy? I've been scoping out this guitar for awhile because it is a beauty and I was really looking at the Squier classic vibe thinline '70's natural telecaster with the pearloid pickguard and f hole. That has humbuckers. I bought a 2019 Squier classic vibe stratocaster and have really enjoyed playing it but I only use #4 position because the other 4 suck and I haven't changed the pickups. Recently I checked out the Yamaha Nexstar RSS02T with P-90'S or humbuckers and it's a fantastic guitar so that's my dilemma, lol. I'm going to probably get the Nexstar because it will probably be the last guitar I buy . I enjoyed your video and the guitar very much, thanks.

I’m well! I know I’ve been quiet. Had to take a mental health break for a bit. But that aside, you honestly cannot go wrong with a Revstar RSS02T. Those are absolutely stunning instruments. I don’t own one, but have a friend who’s endorse with his own custom build. I fell in love with Revstars after I played it. As far as P90’s vs Humbuckers: That’s a tough one for me to answer. It’s really a personal thing as it has to jive with your rig and playing style. P90s also add 60-cycle hum, but give a brighter, snappier tone. I mean, I’m big on both depending on what the song calls for. Take advantage of a guitar store’s return policy and try them out. I’ve not many complaints about Squier other than some scattered QC issues with wiring. So I usually rebuild a Squier’s harness almost immediately after getting my hands on one. Yamaha’s, speaking mostly through my own experience, has been nothing short of consistent and awesome.

But they’re a bit bright for my liking. So I’m either about to jump back in to replace with 250K pots, or add a 470K resistor into the mix to fool the pickups into thinking the pots are 250K. I’ve even thought about adding a “bright” switch, which would basically do the opposite of its name when engaged. Basically when off, it’s it’s usual bright self with 500K pots in full effect. When on, it engages the 470K pot to shave off the highs. It’s a thought for the time being.

Weird. I already swapped pickups on mine and it had a big bar magnet beneath. Could he Alnico, I guess. But I don’t often see Alnico bar magnets on much outside of a humbucker. Thanks for chiming in. It’s definitely worth a deeper look.

Jazzmaster pickups have alnico slugs as polepieces (just like Strat and Tele pickups) and they are non-adjustable. These paranormal pickups are more like a p90 construction (in a Jazzmaster sized package). They have non-magnetic adjustable steel polepieces and thus require the bar magnets. If you put ohmeter probes at two different spots on a ceramic bar magnet you will not get a reading. If you do the same to an alnico bar magnet you will get a reading of 0 showing continuity because it is a metal alloy and will conduct.

@thomasmurray5676 Well, now that makes a lot of sense. I replaced mine with Tone Hatch’s 1962 Jazzmaster pickups for fun and was alarmed at seeing the bar magnets. I didn’t give it much of a thought, and stashed them away somewhere in the pit that is my garage. Now I’ve to dig them out and try getting a reading for shits and giggles. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the matter. Much appreciated.

@@11thFret Do you think its possible to install a Bigsby on it? I guess it depends on the hollowness behind the bridge

Possibly. I’ll have to go dig her out again tomorrow to peek. I already modded the hell out of it, but had to stash it due to all the flooding in LA within the last two weeks. I’ll try and check tomorrow. But as I recall, it’s a solid block down the middle of the body. So a Bigsby B5 ‘should’ have at least a couple mounting screws going into solid wood.

I really appreciated this vid, but I'm going to offer some unsolicited advice (and, believe me, I'm not the only person who feels this way): You often repeat yourself and/or babble on waaaay too much before reaching a point... I like you A LOT, but you NEED to learn how to edit yourself. It's a sign of being a more mature, self-aware human. It just is. No offense intended. You're a fairly young guy and it's easy to get seduced by digging the sound of your own voice. But you need to always be thinking about your audience. I promise you--you'll look back on these vids in a few years and cringe unless you start being a bit more self-critical when it comes to editing and realizing what you audience really wants/needs. I'm juz sayin'... Take it from someone who made these mistakes when he was your age. Keep doin' what you're doin'! I'll keep tuning in and am sure you'll get better with each posting. Keep jammin, bro!

It’s a very real, very debilitating habit I always struggle with. I have a lot of self awareness to the matter, which is why I’ve not uploaded in a bit. I’ve probably shot maybe 15-20 other videos, and scrapped each one because of my recognizing the so-called babble during edits. And there’s no offense taken. I always appreciate feedback. Others push for me to just upload no matter what: Babble, silence, errors, etc. But because I struggle even worse with scripting & storyboarding, I often freewheel my videos just to end up disliking them because of that exact criticism I place on myself. The last video I uploaded is one I don’t even recall speaking in. So yeah, you kind of hit the nail on the head. I’m aware. It may go on for some time as I refine how I deliver my messaging. In the meantime, I’m definitely working on it. All the best, K

@calvinevans6347 Ha. Thanks. Everyone has an opinion to share, and Mark's was valid. When you put yourself out to the world over the internet, you'll attract a wide spectrum of comments. I appreciated Mark's because it came from an authentic place. I myself am a massive skeptic, so even nice comments can feel more like lip service since I trust very little and am hypercritical of myself almost beyond measure. I'm not saying I want to be constantly given constructive feedback as I'm sure that would give any person some kind of complex. But every now and again it's wonderfully helpful. But I definitely appreciate the sub, and you going to bat for me. That's also extremely thoughtful and considerate. All the best!

Yeah, I’m with you there. I personally struggle buying “signature” instruments because of that reason: A visual replica, usually containing substandard production parts with the artist’s silkscreened signature somewhere selling for a premium price tag. No thank you. I’d likely build a partscaster first. 😂 Now granted, that’s not always the case with signature models. But that’s what I often observe, keeping me away from anything affixed with an artist’s name.
