The real Mauga counter is maps with pits for real. He can't really challenge Hog that easily with the threat of getting dragged off the map.

Mauga vs Hog isn't that big a gap as long as you adjust strats. Mauga is better in open field fights, Hog is better at corner peeking, Mauga is better at long stretches. If you play around cover, Hog can win because you can isolate him and burst him down. If you play open fields, Mauga takes it because chaingun go brrrr. Tbh to me they feel like inverted kits. Mauga needs to get into the fighting to heal, Hog needs to get out, Mauga's ult draws targets in and deals no damage, Hogs ult throws targets away dealing a significant amount. Hog repositions players, Mauga repositions himself.
