This Sun-Loving Chuckwalla is Feeling the Heat from Invasive Species

This is Charles, a 27-year-old San Esteban chuckwalla. This species of chuckwalla is the largest of its kind. Native to a single tiny island in the Gulf of California, Mexico, this sun-loving lizard is endangered due to hunting, the pet trade, and invasive feral animals who prey on their eggs.

I’ve actually been considering adopting a chuckwalla because of their temperament and the fact that they eat a strict vegetarian diet so I wouldn’t have to feed them any animals unfortunately even though they make great pets for reptile lovers they aren’t very popular at least right now so they are hard to come by and there aren’t a ton of breeders

This animal requires a special diet, ultraviolet light and a spacious enclosure. This specimen looks a little "tore up". Perhaps it has been deprived of one or more of these much needed factors. These lizards will become extinct in the near future. And that's the Way of the World.

This guy is obese, I get they are very flat reptiles so they naturally look big but he has noticeable neck and arm flaps. He can go brumate very easily with that kind of weight on him.
