It can be argued that what Perez did is why Real Madrid are as big as they are today....i say argued only bcos of the Calciopoli incident which changed the overall dynamic of club statuses around Europe at that time & i believe this helped Madrid and other clubs and keagues in many ways cos alot of top players left Italy after the Calciopoli incident for other clubs in Europe and also alot of new talent no longer considerded Italy as a top option....till the dust settled after the calcio incident....its hard to deny that not only Madrid but many other big name Euro clubs capitalised on the aftermath of the calciopoli incident. Just what i think is all

Depends what you mean by failed. The team was shattering records for off the pitch earnings, they were one of the most legendary football teams of all time and even though Madrid have always been one of the best teams ever, the Galactico era really did put them up a level in terms of glamour and prestige and they’re still riding that wave to this day. Because of the Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo signings, Madrid is still seen today as the absolute top of the mountain for the best players in the world to reach. Prior to that they were still a huge club but no bigger than the Milan’s the Juventus’ and the Barcelona’s of the world.

Real Madrid were bigger than Barcelona and Juve back then (although Juventus were performing better at the time). Milan were up there until Calciopoli, which practically finished Serie A. The power shift to La Liga was completed when Jose Mourinho left Inter for Real.

@@Contextualiser16-tn8nd nah dude Real were obviously always a huge club but they were just one of the huge clubs prior to the Galactico era. They won zero champions leagues from 1960-1998. That’s almost 4 decades. They’ve had some great players but it’s not like now where they can just take players from the biggest clubs in the world as if those clubs are beneath them. The Galactico project was what set them apart from the rest of the pack. It gave Madrid this class and prestige. They started targeting the worlds best players every year and ever since then Madrid has just become the final destination for the worlds best players. The Galacticos is what people think of when they think of Madrid. It changed that club forever.

I think that in comparison to what they SHOULD have won they were a major disappointment. Yes they brought fame and money to the club, but a true testament to a team is the trophies they bring home. And in this aspect they underperformed.

@@FootballPitchedYT But they left a better legacy than teams that won a lot more. So the project was a success. I don't think they get Ronaldo if not for the Galactico era. He literally left a treble winning team that raised him from a teenager for a side that was in pretty bad shape because it was Madrid. And Madrid is Madrid because of the Galactico's.

@SonnyK248- they would have, they've always been huge- look at the greats that played for them before many of us were even born - Di Stefano, Puskas, Hugo Sanchez etc. The reason why the 2nd project worked so well is because they got a Galactico Manager in at the beginning (Jose) and then continued hiring elite coaches like Ancelotti & Zizou. They also got rid of the failures quickly like Benitez and Lopetegui.
