This Terraria weapon is the ultimate hidden gem... The Dark Lance. The spear sub-class is one of those weapon collections that can be very easily missed in your Terraria playthrough- with good reason tbh, with most spears performing underwhelming at best, at least compared to other melee options. But, maybe with in this niche pool, there is actually a hidden gem that can compete against the Night's Edge... Enter the Dark Lance, a late ish pre-hardmode spear, that I think after significant buffs in the 1.4.4 update, is now finally one of the best pre-hardmode weapons in the game. Give it a go! Enjoy!

People probably forget that spears exist because it doesn't age well into hard mode. Yes, the dark lance is great, but what about after you kill the WoF? The adamantite glaive? That one Old One's Army spear that looks cool but isn't that good? The chlorophyte partisan? That one Frost Moon spear? Meanwhile, flails get the flairon, yoyos get the eye of cthulu, etc.

The North Pole is pretty good, but it comes so late in progression that there's always better melee options. They actually reworked it in 1.4.4 which imo nerfed it because they made it so all the flakes don't fall on the same spot, which was devastating for large single targets. Now it's always spread out, and there are much better crowd control weapons.

We should get a spear drop from the queen slime since she has very few weapon drops. It could shoot out a cluster of slimeballs similar to the expert mode item that bounces. Then give it a single pierce and give it stats comprable to the mushroom spear and there ya go, new spear in a good point in progression

Crystal assassin gear is trash, because there's no reason not to have the shield of cthulu. Pre mech your much better off going for frost or forbidden armor. Plus, note the wording of my post. I didnt specify anything about range because I assumed that the range would be easy to understand as just being the same range as mushroom. Plus mushroom has more projectiles per swing than my idea, mushroom is easier to obtain and you get it after a mech boss. You know what else you get after a mech boss? Hallowed bars which can be used to craft the excalibur for close range damage or the gungnir if you just want to stab things with pointy sticks. My idea is to have it be comparable to the mushroom spear and the gungnir, while still not outshining either due to the fact that the projectiles I said it would shoot are those of the expert mode queen slime drop, which are affected by gravity. Also nowhere did I mention projectile damage, speed, range or quantity. A happy medium would be 4 projectiles dealing about 50% of the weapons listed damage while also traveling about as far as an arrow and as fast as a frost sword bolt. The spear itself should have a base damage of 56, the range of a trident, fairly low use time and high knockback to comensate for its low range. Also, just because I forgot it earlier, the obsidian swordfish which can be obtained at the very beginning of hardmode does more base damage than all of these. So there. Quit whining.

@@user-ne3cn1rh6i also, if youre playing on master mode like you should be, The Black Spot is obtainable at the very start of hardmode if youre good enough, which not only provides infinite flight before other infinite flight options become available but also completely invalidates the existance of both the mount and hook you get from queen slime, and also happens to be a great mount to use against her due to its nice speed and infinite flight alongside being able to do ram damage if you really insist your mount needs to be able to do damage.

The issue with the lance in comparison to the nights edge is the lack of cover it provides, as the smaller hit box allows enemies in groups to sneak past any initial hits and deal damage. You can see it happening with the wof and the mimic tests.

I remember looking through the labor of love balance changes and thinking "wow! The dark lance is finally good!" To give it credit, it's definitely not _bad,_ but the nights edge really blows everything else out of the water.

Not really. Nights edge has almost half the dps compared to the dark lance. You played probably before the nights edge nerfs as well. Dark lance rules in single target dps and even crowd control. It’s worse at dealing with hungries though, so that’s pretty much the only downside.

I've loved spears since they buffed True Melee, but the Dark Lance is especially great because just how good it is against the Wall and even into early hardmode in True Melee playthroughs. Good to see this awesome weapon getting some much deserved recognition!

The reason the night's edge rose in popularity was because of the hungries in Master mode. If you can use bot (Kill hungries with NE and WoF with DL, you'll have a quicker fight than any other combination i think.

I like to keep both dark lance and night’s edge on hand in melee playthroughs, since it’s easier to hit and knock things back with the edge but if I can get it right, I can do a lot of damage with the lance.

Ive managed to get this weapon pre-boss on my last playthrough. It was on the dont dig up secret seed, there was an ocean cave that was blocked off by the dungeon. On top of the dungeon, there was a water chest with a shadow key. Very cool.

Not only that as you see guys it has the strongest debuff on pre-hardmode in melee class , it has a shadow flame debuff which deals 5 damage, compared to poison and fire which deals 1 damage overtime

Each time I play as melee I go after this weapon. The Dark Lance is very good against crowds of enemies in close proximity. I use that as much as the Night's Edge and Sunfury. I even prefer that lance instead of any yoyos in Pre-Hardmode. This also carries my melee playthrough up to the mech bosses because it is good for world exploration in early Harmode.

I think something to note with the dark lance against the Wall of Flesh is that its directional attack isn't really good at keeping The Hungry or leeches at bay without diverting your attention from the actual boss, whereas the Night's Edge's large area of effect basically makes them completely ineffective. Personally that makes the Night's Edge generally better for the fight, and seeing as its the main thing you're gonna want either weapon for it makes the choice between the two a lot easier imo

the Dark Lance is great since the buff. I find the Night's Edge to have more utility because of its huge AOE as opposed to the Dark Lance's narrow hitbox, in my melee playthrough I used both against the Wall of Flesh: Night's Edge against the Hungry and Dark Lance against the main boss

this thing, when i did my master mode melee playthrough, was INSANE, i absolutely loved the combination of a magma stone and poison flask along side it to absolutely shred through everything, this is the weapon people should be using for WoF, not the nights edge, nights edge is good for the hungry, but this is good for everything else

I’m pretty sure that spears aren’t effected by melee speed bonuses so in full helstone gear, night’s edge might has better single target DPS. Still though, the dark lance is a great melee option for late pre hardmode

The Dark Lance is very strong for sure but where it beats all other pre-hardmode melee options in damage, it lacks in area of effect which is an issue nearly all spears share. Against groups of enemies surrounding you, especially including mixes of airborne and groundbound enemies such as, say, the early hardmode Jungle, the Night's Edge fairs a lot better because of its large, circular area of effect. However, the Dark Lance excells in invasion events where the majority of enemies are grounded, like the Old One's Army's first tier or the Pirate Invasion, but the Drippler Crippler still remains the best option for large horizontal crowds of enemies. For early hardmode cave exploration, the Night's Edge is definitely your best bet as well. I hear the Dark Lance is pretty good against the Wall of Flesh for melee players but the Night's Edge and Starfury allow you to get hit less, the former because it keeps the Hungries away with high continuous knockback, and the latter because of its essentially infinite range. All in all, Dark Lance, underrated for sure but lacking in versatility.

IDK that it could fight the Night's Edge, but it IS very good since its last rework/buff. I do wish Relogic would give some more love to the lesser subclasses.
