Our dump has a hazardous material day several times a year. They'll take the mercury, batteries, lithium batteries, fluorescent lights and more. I remember when science was taught in school by real teachers who would love to have that mercury for simple experiments for the kids. Thank you Mr Pete.

The mad hatter's problem came from breathing fumes with mercury in them, used to shape hats. If you don't have cuts on your hands/skin, and you don't get any mercury inside your body, it's difficult to have any ill effects. The big problem in the near past was having it in thermometers, if they broke, you now had broken glass, and mercury in your mouth. Others have suggested contacting your local officials, I would suggest do one of your short temporary videos and ask if there is a viewer in your area who knows a chemist, or other person who could use some mercury. Anyone who follow Cody's Lab knows you can still buy it, because he has gallons, so I suspect there must be someone close who not only wants it, but would put it to use. Thanks for all your good work.

Good Morning Mr. Pete... You may want to consider contacting your local fire department about the mercury. They should know how or where to dispose of hazardous materials in your community. Plus they are going to know the laws in your community regarding disposal. I myself live in Connecticut and what may be completely legal for me might violate laws in your area. Hope this helps. :)

For the mercury, check with Johnstone supply. Illinois has several locations. The local Johnstone supply near me in Florence, SC, which sells heating and air conditioning supplies, has a recycling bin for old thermostats that contain mercury.

Love these odds and ends videos, Mr. Pete. That little tray is really something special. I knew that Pratt & Whitney made aircraft engines (I recently flew a PBY Catalina with a pair of them), but I had no idea that they made their own their own machines. Those were great times for our country! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your wonderful family!

I take all mercury containing articles to McLendon Hardware here in the Puget Sound area. Someone comes in periodically and collects them and recovers the mercury and sells it. It is still used to catalyze various chemical reactions, but has largely disappeared from consumer items.

Some very nice items from some very generous people. I have had a few Moore & Wright metrology instruments. They are very high quality tools. Moore & Wright, is in my opinion is on par with Starrett, The new Brown & Sharpe, and all the rest. I must confess my disappointment in the treasures you showed us but two things were clearly missing! No Old Spice gift sets, no multi-purpose all-in-one tools. You've expressed you love for these gifts too. Maybe Santa forgot to drop them off and they will arrive late? Happy New Year!

You got me on that little mill. It may take 3c collets, but the model is a Pratt & Whitney 3C Miller. They apparently had a few versions, including ones that had a belt drive in the base as well as external belt drives. There's a web site that shows one with a range of accessories including a vertical head, dividing heads, and overarm and change gears ( for helical gear cutting? ) as well as the usual stuff. Looks like they made them in the first half of the 1900's so that one might be that early.

Mr. Pete, with regard to what to do with your mercury, hopefully your town or county has "household hazardous waste drop-off days" like our county does here in central NJ. These days are free of charge and open to county residents, occurring on five separate Saturdays throughout the year. They specifically mention that they will collect "mercury and mercury switches." Hopefully there is such a program in your area. Thanks for a wonderful show and have a happy and healthy New Year!

Those little magnetic base gooseneck lamps are very nice task lights for applications where a short gooseneck is adequate. I have one on my drill press, and it's especially nice on a bandsaw because it illuminates both sides of the blade. I first saw them on Adam Savage's channel. Amazon sells them as sewing machine lamps.

@ellieprice36316 сағат бұрын
We made dimes out of pennies with Mercury also. Ignorance is bliss. Had no hint there was anything wrong with it. We also used pieces of broken glass to shave and shape wood to a smooth finish. Every boy had a slingshot and whatever happened to marbles that boys used to carry in their pockets to compete with other boys in a large ring on the ground. If you “played for keeps”, considered gambling by parents, you could“lose your marbles”. Video games are poor substitutes for those healthy lifestyles.

The mercury, decades ago an older gentleman at work had a story of someone stealing his sandwich from the refrigerator every day. So he goes on to say that he had enough of it and decided to use an old Hungarian (?) trick on him. He then says he broke a thermometer and poured the mercury on the sandwich. He put the sandwich back in the refrigerator. At lunchtime, as usual, his sandwich is gone, he then hears someone yelling and running to the bathroom and not making it. He almost instantly filled the back of his boxers after swallowing the mercury-laced sandwich. The lunchtime larceny was exposed, and they lived happily ever after. Now this story was probably from the 40s or 50s and things may have been slightly different then... I think today if you even tried such a thing you'd wind up in prison... It was a funny tale told by an interesting storyteller his thick accent made it seem even more dramatic. Who knows if this has even a grain of truth to it?

Around about 1800, Edward Charles Howard came up with a process to get rid of mercury. Do NOT do that. Take it to hazardous waste. ... except for a small amount if you do want to do something extremely stupid and dangerous, which as men occurs on a daily basis. ... I gotta have a mercury switch someplace .😅

I'm waiting for the answers to your question about the mercury. My father as a maintenance mechanic for about 20 years and I inherited about a cup of mercury taken from various sources through his career. Short of melting gold and evaporating of the mercury, (not going to do that), I have not found a good use for it or way to get rid of it. Thanks for the great videos.

Have you ever heard of Boys Technical High School, later known as Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School? My grandfather went there many years ago and I graduated with honors while it was still boys tech. You had to have at least. A B average in Jr High to get in. In addition to all the requirements for a HS diploma we had shop 3 periods a day plus drafting class. I rode a city bus 45 minutes each way and did at least a couple hours of homework every day to graduate with a 3.89 GPA. It was the best decision, other than marrying a fantastic and supportive woman,I made and I would advise any young person to go into one of the trades for a satisfying and secure career.
