The Sanskrit Hari-Hara-Sutha-Ashtakam, composed in 1950 by Kumbakudi Kulathur Iyer, was begun to be sung by V.R. Gopala Menon since the 1960s to bid Ayyappa Good Night. This was carried on since his demise by the Mel Shanthi, Thirumeni Eashwaran Nampoothiri, as he shut the doors of the Sanctum Sanctorum each night. This is of course, in a very different Raaga from the film tune "Harivaraasanam,"made by G. Devarajan and popularised by Yesudas. Here Yesudas sings the Deverajan version at the Sanctum. I am sure that, in the interests of "secularism", the Supreme Court will replace both Sanskrit and the Mel Shanthi with a Christian Nun to sing psalms if approached. And, in deference to Moslem sentiments, decree that she must wear a Burqa when she officiates as the Chief Priest.
