We've finally installed our new Compoost Toilet and to say that we are over the moon with it would be an understatement. We have had a compost/separator toilet on our boat for 6 years now and the Compoost is infinitely better than our previous toilet.
Check out Compoost toilets here compoosttoilet...
We were gifted this toilet but we were under no obligation to make this video.

► FAQ
Q• Why are you uploading cruising videos and renovation videos at the same time.
A• As of October 2021 we have finished our journey to visit every waterway on the connected system but we still have a back lock of videos to edit. For this reason we are uploading a cruising video each week till we finish the journey. In November 2021 we started a project to renovate our Narrowboat and as there was a lot of interest in is filming this we decided to alternate the renovations with the old cruising videos. We also aim to get one renovation video up each week until the cruising videos are finished.
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Q• Why are your video's so behind?
A• We would love to release all our video's in the same week that we film them but that isn't possible for us. Jo only really has the capacity to edit two video's per week and as we make a video for each cruise that we do and we some times cruise 3 or 4 or 5 times a week we inevitably get behind. We fit in the vlogs around our lives not the other way round.

What glimpses of the rest of the renovation that you allow us to see look positively fabulous. Well done! I know it's not finished, and you're not going to give us a tour until you're totally satisfied, but considering the agony of a reno, with both of you surviving, based on what I've seen, all I can say is, "Heartiest congratulations to you both!". By the way, is that a diesel heater in the corner of the bathroom? What a wonderful idea!

They are separated toilets. We move the solid waste to a hot compost bin an the waste composts down there for 3-6 months. Calling them composting toilets is a little misleading, but they separate the waste to allow for it to be composted.

Honestly I think you will be waiting forever. CRT are not going to provide any assistance for this so you will be reliant on independent collection businesses and I can't see them being made avaliable across the whole network (unless you know something we don't). If you want to use a separator toilet, and you are on CRT waterways, and you CC I think you have two options; either work out a way to store secondary composting containers on the boat, or ignore CRT's 'request' not to use their bins for solid waste. Fingers crossed we are wrong there is more assistance for this soon! Good Luck!
@BoatTime
@BoatTime Жыл бұрын
@@MinimalList yeah, sadly we agree! We aren’t in a rush to swap to be honest, it would be nice but for now as cc’ers the cassettes is the easiest option. We don’t like the idea of putting in into the bins, as it’s not fair on the workers who handle it etc! In London there’s a good System setup(private) for collection of the waste, let’s hope it spreads around the country more!

Very informative and pretty easy to understand. Amazing that you somehow managed to go 24 minutes without ever saying the brand of your new toilet. Or at least I never heard it. I guess the name is in the video description. While it would have been nice to hear the name a couple of times, it was a nice change from the constant plugs that most give to the products they're reviewing.

Thanks, please can you answer two questions. 1) That filter doesn't look like a recirculating one - yet it's sealed in a plastic box - how does that work? 2) How does the system cope with ...err....post curry deposits?
@MinimalList
@MinimalList Жыл бұрын
1. Its an activated carbon filter. A quick bit of googling have me this... "How does an activated carbon filter work? The activated carbon filter acts by adsorption, and more precisely by physisorption. This means that certain gases present in the air get lodged in the pores of the cabon. The air leaving the filter is then purified of these adsorbed gases." 2. It works just the same with all deposits! Bit of a weird question to be honest.

Hi, it's difficult to say for sure as we don't CC anymore but I don't think we would ever go to a cassette toilet, and we definitely wouldn't go to a pump out. We also don't live on CRT waters any more so I have stopped looking to see if they have provided any facilities or updates on the situation. There is a facebook group that you may find helpful, it is called "Compost Toilets for Boats and Off-Grid Living". Some boaters manage to compost with containers on their roof. Some seem to fit a hot-bin on their bow or stern. I love our hot bin although it has taken me a while to work out how to get the best composting action. I would be more confident trying to compost on the move now we have masted it on land. I am sure many boaters still bag and bin despite CRT's 'request' that they don't do this. Good luck!

Hi Jo. Two questions please. Where do you keep your compost bin and how would you dispose if the solids if you were cruising? We have two bottles so always have a back up. I keep a high content white vinegar and water spray bottle for urine and put a small amount in the bottle when changing it, as it helps keep uric crystals from forming. Also, apparently, it helps with smells. (Although we’ve never had one). It was nice to see your faces again and enjoy your new throne. 👑👑

@shnboardman1 The compoost is a separator toilet. The composting happens in a secondary container. We use a hot-bin so it takes 3-6 months. If you didn't have a hot bin it would probably take up to a year to fully compost down. Compoost recomend that you empty the solids container every ten uses. I hope that helps Jo

Always lovely to see you two, I'm an infrequent visitor but always enjoy your content. Seems to be very little detail on the website but I have gleaned, please confirm, that there is no intake vent? I lived on my yacht for 20 years with various iterations of desiccating toilets so i onow how they work and how they work best. This and all the other plethora of so called composting toilets are not what they call themselves. Human waste in the environment created by these units simply doesnt have time to compost fully, for that to happen you are looking at about a year. The reason I ask about an intake vent is because the most effective draught you can create in this unit is a cross flow of air around the solids chamber. Dont get me wrong they are great but you need to be aware that they work so well in confined spaces because by seperating liquid for solid you have reduced odour by about 95%. By drawing air through the unit you help in disapating the remain moisture in the solids container thus eliminating the rest of the smell. Not because in the blink of an eye, your solid waste has become inert compost. Personally, I would still prefer to vent outside as you are trying to remove moisture, and a bathroom is likely to be a place, periodically, of high humidity. It will also assist if you have no ventilation in that space to keep it dry. Finally, you need to be aware the CRT are not that keen on these units, as basically you are disposing of slightly decomposed human waste into inappropriate places. I fear moving forward people using them will have hoops to jump through and i dont see them taking the necessary steps to provide suitable disposal facilities. Having said all that if I were to own a liveaboard boat again I'd have no hesitation in buildingmy own desccicating privvy.
@MinimalList
@MinimalList Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. There is no intake vent as such but there really doesn't need to be. The solids container needs to be emptied about every 10 uses. I think most people understand that the actual composting happens once the solids are removed from the toilet. It may be more accurate to call these toilets separator toilet though as no composting actually happens in the toilet unit as it is not possible in such a short amount of time. We have a hot bin and we move the solids there to compost down over 3-6 months. (this would take longer if you were not using a hot composter, probably up to a year). When we installed our last separator toilet (the Airhead) it vented outside, honestly we haven't noticed any difference venting to the filter. I don't think it is fair to say that the CRT are 'not keen' on these units. All they have said is that they 'request' that solids are not put in their waste bins. They are fine with boaters composting their solids or using a collection service for the waste. I don't think bins are an inappropriate place to dispose of the dedicated waste. After all dog poo and soiled nappies go in there and all that will happen when the desiccated waste gets to land fill is that it will continue to compost down there. That is much more environmentally sustainable than flushing via a cassette or pump out. I also wouldn't say that boaters have to jump through hoops to dispose of the desiccated waste. Composting is very easy, you just need a few containers, although i would say it is much easier for boaters with a mooring thank for those who are continuously cruising.

We also have the compoost self stirring. Brilliant isn't it. It's funny that you had the exact same experience with the emergency liquid sensor as us although you found yours much quicker than us. We were days hunting it down. I am assuming that you have the spray bottle for the same reason as us. Our liquids started smelling a bit and after trying quite a few things we found that a water chaser to rinse the bowl did the trick. Unfortunately it filled the bottle quicker so we tried the sprayer and that's been the best with little extra water added and a little pressure to clean the bowl. It was the bowl and not the bottle that was producing the smell. Glad I'm not the only that noticed the huevo shelf.

CRT 'request' that solid waste is not put in their waste bins so boaters with separating toilets have a number of options. 1.They can use a collection service although I think this is only avaliable in London. 2. They can use secondary containers to fully compost their waste 3. They can ignore CRT's request. Currently we are not on CRT waters and we fully compost our waste using our hot bin!
