I never noticed the throwing knives. There's so much subtle storytelling in classic. That's why I love it. Like in Tanaris, there's all these trails in the sand, leaving Gadgetzan, and if you follow any of them, there's always some kind of story to find.

Booty Bay's chief designer was John Staats, the Warcraft Diary guy. He was the first 3D level designer at Blizzard, and he had a passion for storytelling via world design. His background was in FPS maps (he made mod maps for Quake and Doom before becoming a professional), and I think that part of his background really helped him shine with level design, because in high octane low story telling games like old FPS games, your only mode of storytelling is, essentially, world design. Booty Bay gets an amazing treatment from its layout, to its overall design. No other city really compares in the game and I think Staats really got to have his whole christmas wishlist with the design. The architecture is obviously awesome and a lot of it is totally unique, but even the little details like the "clothing shop", like, how many other shops in the game have such careful detail put into them like that? Most inns in the game are barren rooms with a single table, but not the Booty Bay inn. Not only does it have tables and chairs, but it sort of has a little floor plan going with how everything is laid out. Really a 10/10 Classic WoW town that honestly beats out even modern towns in WoW.

I remember me and my friend were playing the original open beta before the wow launch, we played 2 days straight, made it to level 23 or so, and than at the end decided to see as much as possible from the world, so we started walking / dying through the jungle, not knowing what would expect us at all. Then after a long stretch of continious tigers and things killing us, we finally saw a mysterious tunnel.. and came out of it into booty bay! WOW! think we settled down there and enjoyed the end of beta days.We felt like we were the first people to ever see this.

What I love about Booty Bay the most is that it's one of the first more mature cities. Goldshire, Lakeshire, Thelsamar and Duskwood feel safe and familiar, but Booty Bay gives you a sense of (like mentioned in the video) a city where people come and go, a place for adventures to pause, share stories and everybody has their own difficult history with things. It's not clean, it's not organized. It's chaoitic and archaic, with all those goblins and their rough attitude. You are no longer on your familiar alliance or horde team. You're in a pit with everyone (Gadgetzan too some levels later) and everybody has to behave to have some relaxation from the straight up wild jungle you dealt with.

I never thought about the irony of candles and torches in the fireworks shop... LOL

I remember running all the way from Stormwind to Booty Bay with my very underlevled night elf warrior when I was like 13 (died like 10 times along the way), completely clueless as to what I was about find. Entering the skeletal shark jaw to find a huge port out of nowhere. I was like "Whoaa......." Then later on, leveling in the zone with appropriate level, I found the Fiery War Axe. The first ever epic, from the pirates on the beaches nearby. I used that axe for way too long because I thought epic items were the best you could get.

Booty bay really captured the idea of a neutral city in a mmo. The ability to kill other players whilst trying to escape the long arm of the law was a such an adrenaline rush

Thankfully they didnt change this place with Cata and it still has its charm today in regular wow . There was a quest line in cata if i can recall correctly where you do a battle in a phased version of Booty bay against pirates though I made my home here when they did the classic release a few years back with my Nelf hunter , gave easy access to movement to the other lands by boat

Makes you wonder if they started on the cities first, spent too much time on them then went quickly back and worked on the towns. Since BB was a neutral “city” that’s why it’s so developed

Does anyone know what the tiny red micro crystals around town are for? You can hear them in this video emitting a low humming sound that's the same sound as night elf street lights. I first noticed it one right at the start of the cave entrance, but they're all around the town. I can't find an answer anywhere

My favorite city is BRD. I never really enjoyed BB because it's layout is so confusing to me and I find it to be a big mess tbh, there's a lot of money and quests to be made in BRD that make it desirable to farm and there's multiple farms in it... My character is actually parked there right now! 😂
