To be honest, that first scene was stupid but it was also honest from a parent’s perspective. No parent wants their child to hurt or feel uncomfortable with themselves which can result in emotional difficulties for their entire life. It is not transphobic to wish for your children to have an easier time in life. The difference is in how the parent responds to a child who somehow differs from the norm. I just want my kid to be happy in his life and life choices so I am accepting and supportive of him. As a parent of a trans man, I do worry for his future with the political pendulum swinging back and forth between biological science and gender affirmation. This will likely be a political football for some time to come. I do believe the final outcome will ultimately be defined by how biological women are treated over time and respected or not.
@FakeVenatus2 ай бұрын
Biological women suffering has never been taken much for politics or history- its more like how men will feel. Also I agree. See there was a trend where people would wish transphobes kids turned out to be trans and it made me feel bad because theyre wishing physical discomfort, rejection from family, and struggles in society on a child. When I said I disagree with it they all called me transphobic because "being trans isnt a bad thing". Yes its not a bad thing but I wouldnt wish depression on someone either- I rather the kid be happy with how they were born.

I have to say that I never saw the villain in Ace as a transperson, but as someone whose thirst for revenge was so extreme that he was willing to do anything for it. As in Oz, the princess was turned into a boy so that no one would find her. In the end, of course, this is subjective.

Things were what they were, and when people used the language they used back then, they didn’t mean to be hurtful. It’s just how people spoke. Are we going to be so sensitive that we’re going to be hurt by something an author long dead wrote before the days of political correctness? The important thing is now that we know, we don’t say or do these things we know are hurtful. Maybe it’s because I’m not trans but the apology video legit gave me goosebumps and not in a good way. I remember when the soap opera "Passions" had a plotline in the early 2000s that featured a trans/intersex villain character named Vincent Clarkson. They passed easily as both a man and a woman (the character was introduced as a woman named "Valerie", who was played by a female actor, then later re-introduced as "Vincent" with a male actor), and wore a Two Face-style half-man/half-woman costume (complete with a creepy mask). "Vincent" had a graphic M/M sex scene (a first in daytime TV!) and later got pregnant by the same man...who turned out to be their half-brother. (Who apparently missed that Vincent had a vagina.) Bizarrely, the plotline was later recycled on "Pretty Little Liars", with another trans/intersex character named "A" (who also got pregnant via a half-sibling). The Naughties were a wild time. 😆

I remember a show I saw as a little child, when I knew I wanted to be a girl, but didn't know anything about transsexuality, that was called "SOAP." It was a comedy soap opera, I guess, and I couldn't follow it that well, but I knew Billy Crystal played a gay man, probably the first openly gay character on TV. In one episode, he meets this wonderful guy, and they hit it off, and then he shows up to a date _in a dress._ He says "I'm going to get a sex change, and then we can be married!" WHAT? Even as a little child I knew that was absurd. You don't get a sex change to be with a man, you get one because you NEED to be the opposite sex. Transsexual is not the end result of gayness. I couldn't believe that was how they showed it, and I may have been like, six or seven at the time. I look back and appreciated that they tried, but it was a weird kinda allyship.

Two guys are trying to welcome a trans woman to their workplace and they don't handle it very well - from asking questions about surgery to giving her some unwanted voice coaching. The difference was that it wasn't inviting you to laugh not at someone for being trans, but instead at the two guys for being dolts. The only reason why I think that because my mother was more concerned about me being bullied when I told her I was gay. Sometimes parents are more worried about the world not accepting their child and are afraid what challenges might happen that they have to face as a parent that has a child that's gay or trans. They were always the 2 movies my parents would rent on VHS for me when we went to my grandparents. For me, and even now, the trans character is just the villain however, there are elements where you get to understand somewhat as to why Einhorn is the way she is, particularly in the scene when Ace visits her parents where he gets to see Eirnhorn’s childhood home. Using transition in this way, I think made for a very good movie.

I love your content, but I'd like to push back on the Ace Ventura movie. I understand that because the character Fickle, grew out their hair and got implants, they looked like a woman, but they never identified as a woman. It wasn't a case of a transwoman being a villain. Fickle transitioned their appearance, not to relieve gender dysphoria or because they believed they were a woman. They did it specifically to match the description of a missing hiker which was a woman and become a part of the police department to eventually kill Marino. The scene is cringey, but it's not about being transgender or a transwoman being a villain. It was about a mentally unwell man who was so obsessed with getting revenge, they changed their appearance to facilitate that revenge.
@exnihilo4152 ай бұрын
For me Fickle's gender identity doesn't even matter. My problem is the over the top collective vomiting, tongue scraping and using a toilet plunger on your face because of someone that's really dehumanizing and from my point of view it really has carryover both to relationships with cross dressers and trans women who were not murderous, duplicitous villains. The public commentary about the movie at the time was about this scene and not because they were a murderous villain. It did no favors to the image of trans women, cross dressers or people in relationships with them at that time.

I think there’s a difference between making a character of villain who is trans we just happens to be trans and making a villain who is a villain because they are trans or that the trans of that character is villainized. There’s an anime called Haku and there is a villain in there, but they don’t treat her as evil because she’s trans. She’s just getting in the hero’s way.

I think there are some aspects you aren't thinking of, one it was the 90s made fun of everything. Secondly just because a parent would support their kids, doesn't mean they wouldn't be relieved that their kid was in their mind normal. In Ace Ventura Ray Finkle wasn't actually trans, he basically stole Inhorns identity to get his revenge. Also was a murderer so not really caring about his identity. Then for the 90 it was a movie geared at straight white guys, obviously the comedy in the movie is an exaggeration of how the average guy might reacted findings out the knowingly made out with a man.

My son was born in 1999. He loved wearing princess dresses and his favourite silver sequence shoes and it never crossed my mind that he would have any identity or sexuality issues simply because I was his mom. However, no parents would ever want to see their children suffering. Ah, I’m a bit ill and can’t write more than this but I hope I’m making just enough sense here 🎉

Oh wow! People can be so sensitive. As a woman, it is hard to watch any movie featuring a woman, made before 1990. I don’t think it’s specifically targeted to a particular section of society. I tried watching Flashdance and had to stop. Art can only reflect its time, so most movies do not age well.

@@thelestrangelair What about? That people’s perception changes over time? About everything! We can’t live in the now and be able to live 20 years ahead simultaneously. In the 80’s, the word gay was not printed in newspapers, mentioned in any television shows/ news. Never, ever. Then AIDS forced people to use that word. Times change.❤️

I only watched Ace Ventura once, but even though I knew Sean Young was a female actress, I actually kind of liked that they showed a trans woman that was so beautiful. I grew up thinking that passing was impossible, even before puberty, which was a bit nuts, and while it didn't make sense, I felt good that at least in movies, you could become a beautiful woman. It was way better than the "men in dresses" trope we generally used to see.

Struggling with your sexuality or gender isn't easy. No parent wants their child to go through something like that. I can imagine a mom being relieved her son doesn't have to go through that. Plus, it isn't realistic to expect the people around you to adjust to the new 'situation' this fast; it takes time.

9:01 Speaking of a villain who transitioned, there was an episode of NCIS where a naval officer murdered his comrade and then became a girl to escape justice, making use of a fake ID aside from HRT and stuff. I don't remember if she already underwent the SRS or if she would have it soon (I think it was the second, if i remember correctly Abby confirmed that to agent DiNozzo, who almost hooked up with her😅)

I’d like to point out (and I hope this doesn’t offend you because I absolutely adore you and Liam!❤) but as a mother myself, I can honestly understand the mom from the first clip being relieved when he son said he was just trying to win money for the bike. It’s not that we would love our child any less or even be disappointed. I feel like for me, I would just be relieved that my child isn’t going through something so difficult as gender dysphoria and all of the surgeries, physical pain, emotional struggles, societal struggles…I can’t even imagine going through all that as an adult, much less a child! So yes, I will admit that I’d feel somewhat relieved too BUT if my child were going through it, I’d most certainly be right there beside them every step of the way!!❤💕

I think the zack and cody scene actually isnt that bad and that it could very much fit a parent who is probably gen x or a baby boomer to have certain beliefs. Like you could say maybe the mom is actually supportive of lgbt but wouldnt want her son to suffer since being trans and transitioning is really not an easy thing. Likewise you wouldnt be happy if your child turned out to have depression. But its also possible the mother really had some prejudice, and since she is a character theres nothing wrong with that. There are characters like the joker who literally kill people, yet people like these character, but a character isnt allowed to be transphobic or homophobic and still generally liked especially when they arent deeply prejudiced and seem more uneducated? The only characters that really negatively reacted in the scene seems to be the mother and the girl, though the latter only did so because she was tricked, essentially like catfishing. This wasnt an actual trans woman being accused of deceiving people, this is an actual boy in a dress case The ace ventura scene though...thats uncomfortable. I like the rest of the movie but that part is just cringe. Especially the reactions. They didnt react in a way that theyre shocked about who she used to be (a criminal) but instead seem to be disgusted about who she used to be (a man). I think a trans villain who deceives people about their identity could be an interesting character, but id prefer that probably not be in a comedy or at least give the people more...nice reactions. Like you can definitely be devastated. Imagine if instead you found out your partner cheated on you. You clearly wouldnt react with disgust Lastly: actors do not have to apologize for the actions of their characters. Unless the scenes and lines were improvised (which usually isnt the case) the actor simply did what they were told

I always thought the spitting and scratching of the tongue in Ace Ventura was a spoof on the movie The Crying Game hence the song. In the Crying Game the man has this theatrical reaction to being with a trans person. I guess I never really saw the detective character as a transperson because they transition not because they suffered from body dysmorphia but because they has an elaborate plan to get revenge. And changing their sex was the perfect disguise. It is interesting to see it from a different perspective though.

I honestly didn't think the Zack & Cody one was bad at all I think it aged well and her breathe of relief seemed more like she was relieved that she didn't have more issues to deal with. As a mom I would feel the same. I don't think she needed to apologize but it was ok that she did. The Ace Ventura one was a little bit direct because it made her a villain only because of being trans and the part of pointing out the anatomy which was dehumanizing the person.
@ALicia-rn4mq2 ай бұрын
I dunno.. I kinda get that first scene. As a parent I want my children to live an easy life wherever possible. I don't want them to experience mental illness, and I definitely wouldn't want them to experience gender dysphoria and end up needing surgery to be able to live an authentic and happy life. Nobody should want that for their child. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be loved and supported and accepted if that was to come to pass. Just that I understand her relief in that scene.
@melissadwiggins2 ай бұрын
6:55 Even if a parent is on board 100% with their child transitioning (which is something I don't think is right because they're minors and they can't make life-changing decisions like that), that parent is still going to be sad that what their child is going through or is about to go through is going to be very hard for them and heartbreaking for the parents to watch and not really be able to do anything about it except support their child. That being said, I don't think any kind of medicalization should happen until after they're 18. Really I think 25 is a better starting point, but once you're 18 here in the States you're an adult. You might not be able to buy cigarettes or alcohol, but you'll damn sure get thrown in the ADC if the police catch you doing some craziness.

When I watch Ace Ventura I don't see Lois Einhorn a trans woman, I see Ray Finkle a man driven so crazy over getting revenge that he's willing to go that far to exact his revenge & the way its so over the top is why I find it funny. The fact of all these men gagging is a way of showing how many people Ray has been willing to have relations with in order to get his revenge, even though there is no hint to him being gay or feeling like a woman trapped in a mans body. I will admit they could've used a different song though.

Nothing should be off limits for comedy ever. What I think matters most is the intent behind the joke right? Comedy, real comedy, is supposed to get people talking about these problems and not spread more hate or incite violence. I’d like to point out I’m German, and bisexual, and the amount of slurs and hateful jokes that were thrown at me during Highschool was awful alright? I love comedy, I love when it comes from a good place, and I make TERRIBLE jokes myself but they always come from a good place.

It wasn’t just because of that he would be canceled for making that movie today, the problem is that should be allowed to be made today. If you don’t like it, that’s because comedy is subjective.some people take their issues and make jokes out of them. I know I do so it’s not tasteless comedy it’s comedy. Specifically, I’m talking about Ace Ventura.

These were from a different time when the term "transgender" wasn't part of a woke vocabulary. Transvestite and crossdresser were the definition of the day. Jim Carey films are always a little crude. I think EVERYTHING these days is analyzed and over analyzed when some things were just ment to be a joke. Obviously, it won't be funny to everyone. Life is short. We take away what we can from it, we learn and let the rest go.

I dont think its really awful as a parent to be relieved that their child is not trans. Its not because they dont like trans people, but no parent wants their child to have to face a more difficult life and face hatred or conflict because of who they are. Its natural to want your child to grow up and have a nice life. Its not wrong to have a baby and have dreams of what life is going to be like for their little girl/boy. To dream of seeing them in their wedding dress, or having a baby etc. Of course Id accept my child if they come out as trans or gay or anything else and I will support them no matter what, but I would have to grieve my dreams too. However, i do also see why that joke was just unnecessary and why it was so problematic. I can relate to hearing jokes at the expense of yourself - I have red hair and was bullied relentlessly for it and still get really hurt when I hear jokes or insults related to that. It was so difficult and I felt id never be attractive to anyone and I still live with those scars to this day, so i completely agree that the beauty pagent scene would've been funny and fine without that joke. Its awful to imagine children seeing that and being too frightened to go to their parents to talk about how they feel out of fear of making their parents disappointed. Its lovely that she apologised and I think the way she did it was great. Love you Alexis! ❤
@Jessica-lt8ug2 ай бұрын
so one point I want to make is the mum from Sweet Life..maybe she wasn't relieved because he isn't trans, etc. Still, it could be more about worrying about how he knows about sexuality, or perhaps SHE is not ready/prepared to handle that big of an issue, or maybe she hopes it would be further down the line give her time to prep or consider how to approach it and there might be signs and such? Just a thought. As far as apologizing 20 years later, we don't know what kind of blowback she was getting. and Maybe seeing how it affected some people she wanted to ensure that people understood it was *not* her actual views. And as it stands I think, in general, we need to look at the world with a tad kinder eyes. We are all trying to find spaces to be and exist and be accepted. Comedy is a place where everyone is on the chopping block, where sometimes it might veer into touchy or hurtful territory. BUT we don't have to tear down the people who said/portrayed etc the joke that is now considered offensive. You can nicely let them know, say hey this joke really touched a nerve, and was a tad hurtful..give them grace enough to help them consider changing, and if they don't then as a person you don't have to enjoy that joke(s) but can enjoy the rest. But this constant push and pull of past issues has to end. We can't walk forward looking backward. The past is a roadmap to help us realize the pitfalls of what was, so we can create a better what will be. (end rant sorry this was so long! LOL ) P.S. love your videos hon, you and Liam keep being AWESOME!!!

I absolutely agree with everything you said now onto the microphone I actually like the sound of the microphone that you’re using right now. I have low tone deafness, and the bigger more proper. If you will microphones have a basier sound to them. So it makes some words unclear for my hearing. This one seems to be a little more toned as opposed to deep toned. It is not brassy sounding like that. It’s still very clear. The only thing I noticed that might be a negative until you adjust is you do talk with your hands a lot so do I even as I’m dictating this? I’m moving my hands around. We tend to touch our chest when we really means something, and since you are honest in all of your videos and sincere, you tend to do the same thing a lot so just be aware that when you touch your chest, you’re tapping the microphone and that sounds a little wonky but other than that, I actually enjoy the sound of the smaller more than the bigger. “ Proper “microphones as always. I love your content and commented on a few as I am a biological female. I’m also double nickels in age, and watching you has given me a better opinion of trans women because you actually see my point of view and how I’m now having to call and fight to be called a woman, not a woman or a womb or a baby carrier or whatever all the other terms are so thank you for being your most honest and authentic self and changing at least my opinion so that when someone does refer to me in other ways other than a real woman, I just now ignore them because I know that not every trans woman is as bigoted as the ones who attack me so thank you so very much. You are amazing as I always say have Liam give you a big bear hug because you deserve it. Have a wonderful day!

Re: twins episode --The majority of humanity is heterogeneous and so anything out of the ‘norm’ will be deemed an added stressor for the parents children. Most reasonable parents want their children to have a happy and trouble-free life. All of us go through ‘what are we’ during puberty it’s a normal and essential development path. I believe that there is no such thing as a ‘trans-child’ - we all have queries and it is not until we reach sexual and cognitive maturity that we can believe our ‘mind’. So Alexis - you did your surgery and change of life at the correct age. 🇬🇧❤

I hate when LGBT constantly cry every time a villain is LGBT (as bisexual I find that problematic, both because gay villains can exist and because villains can be deep and interesting characters), but THIS character is a true example of this complaint being justified. Even as a kid, when I didn't understand much, I remember watching this film and feeling cringe, like this villain was a bad caricature or something.
