In this case I would seriously consider hiring an explosives expert, explosive cutting works on wood too and can be done from a safe distance.
@WildAcresFarms
@WildAcresFarms 4 ай бұрын
@@apveening I do messes like this regularly. Excavator works great. Dig the stumps of the hung trees out, and drag the stump backward or push it sidesays until it falls out of the standing tree. Then it’s just a bunch of bucking. It’s a fantastic tool for these jobs - you’re in a metal cage and never underneath the danger zone. Explosive sound much more fun, however.

Jacob be very careful doing business with John’s Custom Saws. He has taken many peoples saws and never returned them after years, myself included. 2 brand new 461’s I will never see again. He blames it on health issues, but he is just simply a thief and a pathological liar. You have made a great name for yourself and don’t want to see it tarnished by associating with a criminal like John Alvord.

100% agree about removing all the smaller pieces first. It’s easy to think “what difference is that little bit going to make?”, but sometimes snagging on something quite small can send your top down in a way you weren’t expecting. Plus it’s easier to move ropes and see what’s there and move around. It sounds like a small detail but it can make a big difference. Well done Jake and team, good day.

Sometimes the GREATEST CHALLENGE is SAYING NO - This is a good situation for using an excavator on many fronts. I was thinking when you were in the crotch, the release/cut of the leaners, followed by a sudden subsequent hit on the holding stump (tree you were in) could cause the rotten section (the one you were saying was a double hollow and later confirmed rotten when on ground) ABOVE to break etc... Just my two cells rubbing. Anyway glad nothing bad happened.

Cutting it all up working top down is definitely safer for climbing. Personally I would put a winch on the bottom and drag it out of the maple ( cut free of stump). A couple snatch blocks a 18,000lb winch would drag every thing ground level. Doesn't matter if you have the winch welded to a frame , strapped to a tree or a similar immovable object.

It's sad to hear your buddy got killed on the job. I remember a few seasons ago my friend and I were out on the flat-rock near my grandfathers hunting camp doing some trail riding. One trail we took was a nice enclosed wooded area. Going in was fine like normal, but coming back out I had a limb fall and bounce off of my helmet. It was large enough to feel it bounce off the helmet, almost like someone lightly tapping your helmet with a broom handle. Luckily is was too small to cause any harm. So you don't even need to be cutting this stuff to be taken out, just being near it doing anything is bad enough. Of course this is why we wear head protection. :)

Beautiful job handling a very dangerous and challenging tree, or should I say "set of trees?" I was chewing on my knuckles watching the video. What is the make and model of that gas powered top handle saw that you were using aloft? It seemed like a really great saw. I am curious because I am getting closer to buying a top handle saw. I hesitate because I know they are inherently more dangerous that standard handle saws, but I balance that against the awkwardness and fatigue of using a standard handle saw where it really is not a good fit. I am not a professional by any means. I live on a property in central Oregon that has a lot of trees, and there are still quite a few more that need to be taken down. So, I find myself using a chainsaw quite often.
