That's exactly how I always interpreted it. Using entity limit and weird jankboxes are not glitches. Things like undo button to make blocks with no hitboxes or broken tracks for teleportation is a glitch.

Ahh, so the CP troll happens when you throw the shell to the right before CP1. The CP1 coin is collected offscreen by the shell before you hit it, and you die at CP1 before any of the second-pass trolls are revealed via the spiney. Thus you always respawn at the CP with 1 coin. Then when you keydeath, you no longer respawn with the CP coin, and change the ELB, letting the level twice twice you. Really neat setup. The second level is done via cloned CP1 & CP2 setups, breakable blocks, scroll-stops, keycoins and switch states, though it is very well done. I think a lot of the "puzzle" areas are to ensure the level has time to break the blocks offscreen.

I love that 2nd troll level so much. A lot of levels, like the first, are so ambitious that they overload you. They're impressive but often more confusing than funny. The simpler/cleaner gag type levels are the funniest to me

I figured encryption / authentication would be the limiting factor for an unmodded version, at least until someone manages to crack the keys it's expecting... which could take a very long time. But it would be nice if a simple DNS override was sufficient. Or, like, if it had been designed from the start to allow user-hosted servers... like games did in the past. Not a fan of the trend of ever-increasing corporate control over virtually every aspect of life.

Spoilers/Immersion Break for the Fake Checkpoint level: There is (perhaps accidentally) one block different between the CP1 room and the CP2 room. So one block switches every time you die and respawn, letting you see the twice-twice aspect if you're freakishly observant. From the block the checkpoint rests on (which is broken when you respawn), count blocks to the left. At CP1 there are two breakable blocks and then it switches to unbreakables. At CP2 it goes one further, having three breakable blocks before switching. Might be a slight mistake, or might be necessary for some reason or other, I know not.

I think it’s important to realize there’s a difference between using mechanics in a clever way and exploiting mechanics in terms of what qualifies as a “glitch”. For example, in these levels, I can’t actually think of anything that could be counted as exploits and just really clever uses of the mechanics that once you see a contraption, you can see how it works (it’s just hidden). Versus a glitch where you make things like broken tracks/fake blocks by exploiting the level editor and looking at the level itself doesn’t tell you that it’s broken/fake.

Hey Carl, just wanted to let you know how Nintendo determines if something is a glitch or not. It's a very simple flowchart. Is the object working correctly regardless of the intended use of the object? Yes: It's glitch-free No: It's a glitch A hyperspeed launcher by itself is glitch-free, but the transitive property of the launcher being used to give the player hyperspeed is a glitch, and (in accordance with Nintendo's guidelines) a level which can only be beaten via the use of a glitch, is not allowed. That is why hyperspeed launchers which are semi-allowed.

I think it's only classified as a glitch if it breaks the game's internal logic, which janky interactions or cool and unusual setups do not. It can break the player's expectations of a Mario game as long as it doesn't break the internals' expectations of the Mario engine. Probably. That said, great to hear about all the advances in glitch level sharing happening these days!

There is a very thin line between exploits and glitches. A good example is mock ball in super Metroid. Morphing into a ball mid air keeps the players running speed and when it you land, the ball bounces and resets its speed. However, morphing so that you land the moment you morph does not reset speed, allowing morph ball to move much faster. This is not a glitch, only an oversight and an exploit. It takes advantage of how the game resets morph ball air speed on the landing bounce, and lands at the same time as morphing to avoid the bounce. This puts it very close to being a glitch, but more an exploit.

Nintendo probably takes down levels that cause memory leaks. Bizarre interactions probably don't cause those in the same way that openly abusing the level maker does, and it's probably not even a person that sweeps through and deletes them.
