In the novel Holo was not so kind to Lawrence for harming her precious tail. She does not try to suffocate him. She Punches right in face. Twice. She went easy on him in the anime lol While this is a weird and wonderful arc. Don't worry. There won't be a repeat of the kind of relationship drama we saw between them in Kumerson in this one. You can rest easy on that front. But yeah that snake door knocker and taxidermy snake on the table at Village Elder Sem's house probably point to this being a mostly pagan village. This arc definitely is setting up a mystery. Several actually. Like why is this acting priest girl who has a very similar surname to the Abbot who runs this mysterious Abby that has old pagan legends in it for some reason, denying that it even exists? Same with Sem, the village elder. Why is he denying the Abby exists? What is going on with the Big Church in Enberch and Tereo? Is the Church in Enberch trying to force Elsa out to put someone in her place that will do a better job stamping out all the pagan beliefs in the village? Or is it just cause she is a girl they won't officially make her the priest of the village Church? Father Franz died a few months ago. This past Summer. We are now in late fall. Did Father Franz dying start this trouble? Or, was he the only one keeping the trouble from getting out of hand, and now that he's dead, things are heating up? Elsa is not an official priest. She's just the acting priest since the passing of Father Franz. Also, it seems like she does not do much preaching since the town appears to be predominantly pagan. She may not even be able to be a priest due to being a woman. Also, if this religion is analogous of Catholicism, then she would be forbidden from dating anyone, if she were a real priest. Other Christian denominations allow clergy to marry however, but most exclude women from joining the clergy. Even then, some do allow women clergy so who knows exactly what this world's religion does and does not allow. Seems like Evan the miller has a bit of thing going on with Elsa the church girl as well. That could prove useful since he seems more open and willing to talk, and they can use him to get to her. To find the Abby containing the old pagan legends, and hopefully learn more about the fate of Yoitsu. You're on the right track. Wheat will undoubtedly play some part in this story as well. Lots of questions in this weird little village. But, Holo's hungry! So onward to the village tavern!
