Installing a part from UMI performance on the 87 Buick Grand National and testing to see how much of a difference it makes. The result is crazy!

Good job on doing the work yourself buddy. Do you have anything done in performance upgrades to the motor.

GM had braces like this from factory, you can still find them in junkyards. The UMI bar is a combination of the 3 factory bars, the two Jounce Bars and the "GP" bar. GP bar ties the left and right sides together and runs infront of the swaybar, the jounce bars go from the crossmember to the core support.

That paint is FLAWLESS!! I hope that you have the poly body bushings and the rear strut bar also.... that will make a HUGE difference.. As an alternative to cutting you can use nutserts.

looking back I could have installed this piece a few different ways, but yes poly body bushings are on the list. I'll look into the rear strut bar too, I am about to install new engine mounts from UMI and transmission mount. Thanks for the recommendations!

That smile @ 7:43 looks so familiar 😆 start her up, give her a concentrated ear and listen for anything concerning... nope, huge smile.. it’s all worth it and drive off! At least that’s me in my 86 Regal T-type 😂

I went to UMI's website and it says it doesn't support the Grand National with stock intercooler? Maybe they have updated their site?

Maybe, I don’t have a stock intercooler though, still a pretty tight fit

UMI told me it would not work on the GN/turbo Regal because of the intercooler. Looks like it works with the stock intercooler, but probably won't work with FMIC pipes as that cross bar would hit them.

ZL1power69 yeah we thought we would have to at least cut the shroud but turns out it fits just about perfect!

@@jsbuilds434 good that it works on stock cars. I have an RJC FMIC with 3in pipes. I've made do with 2 of those bars that Kirban sells. I may try the one from SC&C. I did just get the rear UMI shock brace but haven't installed yet. Odds are my RJC crossflow exhaust will interfere.

ZL1power69 I have the viking coil over setup from UMI and all the braces etc and the exhaust in the rear almost was a problem but didn’t get in the way. hopefully you can make your brace work too, it makes a difference!

Other manufacturers of similar parts indicates taping the holes, not drilling a clearance hole, for obvious reasons. ~P

100% should’ve tapped the holes. Being younger back then and so excited to put the part on I didn’t want to wait😂 but, after many many hard laps on the goat he hasn’t complained about the install

I like to waste an hour trying to ju jitsu the nut and washer into place before making rational decisions 😆 The glue idea is a good plan!

Haha! Yeah trying to play guess work in that tight space got old fast, had to use the glue method I came up with while working on my 76 Blazer. Wouldn’t feel right using self tapping bolts without a washer and nut in that piece

Has nothing to do with the chassis getting soft cuz it's old they just didn't make chassis as stiff back then. That's why the GNX has all that extra bracing from the factory behind the back seat and all over the chassis. Why wouldn't you just use nylock nuts They have the built-in nylon to the threads to lock the bolts

These things are called K members a lot of auto maker has them. They are often found on convertibles and you can use them on a sports car and make the chassis 10% stiffer.
