This V12 shouldn't have run with this bad fix by a previous mechanic. Join me as I test some sensors on the engine and make a list of what this Jaguar V12 will need to be back on the road. Restoring and Early Jaguar XJ-S!

I forgot to mention it but of course step 1 is to clean up that engine bay before I start working on it.

Those manifold pressure sensors (MPS) can be repaired. They are also used on the Porsche 914s. Tangerine Racing sells a repair kit for the brass diaphragm which goes bad in the MPS. They provide instructions for adjusting the MPS. You might be able to use that kit to repair the V12’s MPS.

An odd mixture of thoroughness and outright kludging, (the blocked hose) in the restoration. Probably prudent to treat everything with a degree of scepticism about its correctness.

I definitely will. That’s why I want to check valve clearances also. However this could of been bodged at the body shop where the car was abandoned

Hey great video always loved the jags especially the V12. I remember them when I started working in garages in my teens. Remember the mechanics saying if you've got a misfire good luck finding it or even knowing about it. loved peering into that huge engine bay and what looked like a plane engine!

Hello, I love your site and I watch all your videos, the content is great, but you could use some help with lighting. When using the powerful light source, just point it at the roof above where you are filming, this way you will get a very nice soft light covering everything, and the contrast will be much better. Try it out. Cheers from Denmark.

Lots of documentation on D-jetronic if you look up the Porsche 914. That 4 cylinder Porsche uses the same system and it's well documented. Jaguar added an amplifier that multiplies the injector pulse x 3 in order to fire all 12 cylinders.

I had a MAP sensor fail on my 1975 XJ-S, it was the brass diaphragm which had split around the circumference, I made a couple of attempts to repair it (unsuccessfully), then parked the car for a year while I looked for a replacement. I guess you know that there were 2 versions fitted to European cars, with the changeover at engine 8S5203 (1977?). The later type seems to be much easier to find, but yours would be the early type, which is identified by the part number on the Lucas sticker being 73140A. If you fit the later type, the calibration is wrong and the engine does not run well, but it would probably be OK to swap in a matched set of MAP sensor and ECU from a later pre-HE. It is also worth pointing out that until engine 8S5202, the injection ECU does not have an over-run fuel cut-off, which is great if you intend a manual gearbox conversion, I see that your car does not have over-run valves on the manifolds, but for some reason, mine does and if the over-run valves are fitted, the car has a tendency not to decelerate when you take your foot off the throttle, which can be uncomfortable, particularly if the idle speed is also set a little high... BTW, I did spot the fuel filter in that video 5 minutes before you mentioned it!

Hi Adam . You've "accidently " become an aficionado on V12 's ! The perfect illustration was "hasn't anybody noticed the fuel filters ?" I think 99% of us hadn't !! 😆😆 lt's going to take lots of patience and knowledge to do this car and you're just the rignt man for the task ! Thanks Adam.

If it does not hold vacuum it will run high idle so they close the leak :) But it do run without the vacuum on MAP.

Hi Adam, I have a black 1988 XJS V12, and I would love to change it from a 3 speed automatic to a 4 speed automatic. Simply Performance can help with that, right ? A 4 speed would enhance the performance nicely, I believe.

What's your guesstimate on the total cost of your mental list of parts - new, used or rebuilt. Is it $100's or $1000's? Curious.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
To sort out the engine and get it looking nice is about $1000-$1500 in parts depending on if I get the upgraded SNG Barrett ignition system or not. That part alone is near $800. I hope to get the rest of the car on the road for less than $1000. I will keep track though if spending and cover it when it’s done

Are you really sure about the fuel pressure being 10 bar? It is about 145psi. On most cars, the injection rails are at about 30-40psi and whatever would make the pressure higher simply returns to the fuel tank. So, no pressure above 40psi should be seen in the fuel lines. Anyway, I agree that this little plastic filter is a fire hazard.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
The fuel pressure is regulated at 32 psi however most fuel injection pumps are rated for about 10 bar out of them. Not saying you’ll see that pressure normally but if something fails you could

@@LivingWithAClassic Maybe in the situation where the fuel regulator would stuck closed it could potentially happen.
@MrScottCorboy
@MrScottCorboy 2 жыл бұрын
I can confirm that on an XJ12C if you have a fuel tank return valve stuck closed, you will get over 120psi in the rail, so the pumps are pretty strong. Not recommended operating procedure.

I'm actually going through the exact same strip down and refurb of my HE V12 at the moment! One thing I'm surprised at is the cost of the fuel hoses that feed the fuel rail on the HE cars - very expensive! Over £100 per hose!
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
Get a kit from mr.injector in the UK. You can then make your own hoses for the feed and return with them. Did that on 3 HEs last year. Great kits

@@LivingWithAClassic ahh excellent advice, thanks Adam! Never ceases to amaze me as to how much strip down is required on a V12 even for basic service work - I would recommend while you have yours stripped down to do the coolant rails and gaskets as well! I've seen some people refurb these with polished copper pipes and they look great
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
I plan to do that also and possibly get the pipe plated so it all looks nice again. Yes it’s a lot to stop down but once it’s done a lot shouldn’t need to be touched for a very long time
